Everything! Great customer service
Cheaper restaurant in the hotel
This hotel is really lovely, in a beautiful setting - huge room, sky movies included and great food served in the restaurants - especially the Pass. We had a lovely meal there and excellent service. The spa itself was lovely - great main pool (we had to ourselves at one point!) and a lovely warm outdoor pool, loved the salt steam room in particular. The changing rooms for the spa are the best I've ever seen, all staff were pleasant. Our bedroom was massive with a great shower and even a TV over the bath! (Per below - our complaints about the service were dealt with by the management and we did get a bit of the money back without any pushback).
The nut allergy which we flagged to staff 2 hours earlier was ignored, which then lead to a pretty dramatic entrance to our private spa room as we were getting undressed.. not being able to use half the oils kinda then ruined the experience really, wish we had known this beforehand as it was a bit of a wasted experience tbh. After the bamboo massage (which was great though) we were led to the 'relaxation room' in which 2 women were chatting very loudly across the room - so we left after 5 mins. Not the best end to an otherwise great massage, which was a shame. The bed was only a king, which felt a bit odd considering the vast size of the room, and the sheets were a little bit scratchy. We got woken up both days at 9am, 1st day by housekeeping (despite us staying for 2 nights). We had tried to locate a DND sign the night before, but there was no card and so we figured it would be ok with them knowing we were there for 2 nights/this being 5 star hotel etc... The do not disturb sign was apparently the tie on the teddybear (obviously..!). On the 2nd day we were awoken by the fire alarm (which can't be helped of course), but this made us realise there were no signs guiding the route out once you left the room .. so that was a bit of a stressful start to the day. Thank god it was just a drill! We also ordered some wellies on the Saturday to walk around the grounds (an option on the in-room ipad) and there was never arrived/no follow up on that. The breakfast at the spa took over an hour to deliver (basically toast) despite not being very busy, and then they brought our drinks after we'd finished eating. It was a pretty chaotic experience, but luckily in a really beautiful setting. Our complaints were dealt with professionally on check-out, but in hindsight, and since realising a couple of other minor points, it wasn't enough of a discount tbh.
The spa is fantastic. We booked very last minute so couldn't get into the two "main" restaurants for dinner so eat at the botanical restaurant in the spa. The food was amazing and well priced and I think on our next visit I would choose to eat here again.
At breakfast I had to ask for butter for the toast as it didn't seem to be delivered with the toast and there was none available at the buffet. Obviously very minor complaint but I do love butter!
The excellent provided by all of the staff
Nothing we loved everything and have booked again
We arrived at 12 and our room was ready for check in.
We arrived at South Lodge with one goal in mind: get changed and spend the afternoon by the pool. When we arrived, at around noon, we headed straight to the SPA only to find the pool was absolutely crammed with people, with not a single bed free for us. We decided to go to lunch and check the pool afterwards. Again it was so crammed we couldn’t find a single bed free for us, so our only option was to head back to our room. We came back in the afternoon at 4PM, but the situation was anything but improved. We previously booked a massage at 4:50PM so we had to wait around for 50 minutes as we couldn’t again access the pool area. We complained to the Spa and hotel manager, who explained how busy it usually gets on weekends due to local memberships, hotel guests, outside guests and so on. He offered us to be able to spend a few extra hours on the Sunday to make up for the issue (without even knowing if on Sunday it was going to be less busy) which wasn't a feasible option for us as we had to get back home, and we did tell him that right away. It’s also not a great solution considering we could still use the pool up to 11AM as this was our check out time. Again we told him that, but he couldn’t do anything else for us. So, what we were left with was a hefty bill of 319GBP for a stay (plus 250GBP for two massages, and 91GBP for food) which we weren't able to enjoy at all, given the only reason we decided to stay at South Lodge was the pool and heated area of the SPA. This was supposed to be a very special and celebratory weekend for us (birthday & first pregnancy) and the hotel was notified months in advance, and it turned out to be extremely upsetting and stressful. It is not acceptable that paying hotel guests cannot enjoy the SPA and pool facilities during their stay due to external visitors. We were literally only able to spend 1 hour at the pool (after our massage and before rushing to dinner!).
