The aesthetic is even more divine than the photos suggest. It evokes an aura of extreme calm and deep comfort. The finishings — in particular the light fixtures/lanterns — are beautiful/locally inspired in the most tenacious way. The staff were extremely accommodating. They met us in the nearby square to ensure we did not get swindled by the taxi driver or hassled with our bags, which reduced anxiety levels 10-fold (everyone should do this!) He also encouraged us to download a local maps app to ensure we wouldn’t get lost in the Medina. They were quick to respond to requests such as for water bottles or an iron in the room. They were well educated and shared some interesting tidbits on Moroccan history without being imposing. The breakfasts were straightforward but delicious and the welcome dinner, as others have noted, was in the top 3 of our meals in Morocco. Scrumptious Kafte/good vegetarian option! He even offered to set up a post-dinner shisha for us.
Only minor complaint was that, upon our departure, we asked for assistance with bringing our bags back to the square and negotiating a taxi to our next hotel so we would not be swindled. On this occasion the riad “sub contracted” to a local luggage porter with a cart. They assured us we would not need to pay/tip him (as payment would be handled by the riad) and said they would pass on the message that we wanted the taxi fare negotiated at 70R (as he suggested that was a fair price). Not only did the porter demand a tip when we reached the square, he apparently did not tell the taxi driver the agreed upon price as the taxi driver later demanded 120R. At that point, since he was in control of our fates and bags, we were not in a position to negotiate. I realize that many parties were involved in this and the riad cannot be held directly to account, but they need to try to work with more trustworthy partners who won’t demand additional payment and will ensure fair taxi prices for their customers.
My husband and I unfortunately did not have a great experience with Azzouna 13 and it began before we even got to the riad. We had contacted Azounna to make sure that they could accommodate our arrival time since we would be coming late at night. They replied not to worry and that they would accommodate us. As we were approaching our trip we received an email about an option for airport pick up, which we signed up for. We received a reply asking about specifics regarding our flight number and eventually received a confirmation email with time/location to meet the driver and a picture of the sign the driver would be holding. Fast-forward to our airport arrival and there is no driver there for us. We called Sadik and he was annoyed that we were waking him from his sleep’, and stated that we were booked for ‘tomorrow’ which we obviously weren’t. He told us to get a cab and stay the night at a chain hotel until tomorrow. The next morning we call to confirm that we are on our way to Azzouna and Sadik told us he would meet us outside of the Medina as cars cannot drive in, and escort us. We show up and he is nowhere to be found, resorting to relying on a stranger to walk us through the old city to the riad. When we arrived Sadik greeted us with “What happened?,” no apologies or explanations. While Azzouna looks like a beautiful location the longer we were there, the more negative things came up. The water is old and never warms up, the sheets are rough, and there is hardly any lighting. Even with curtains open and all the lights on, I could hardly see my partner’s face. In addition, one night, around midnight, we received a text message from Sadik to keep our voices down as we were too loud and to keep our voices down- we were both in shock because we were speaking in soft voices, and for the rest of the trip found ourselves resorting to whispering to one another. While the pictures of this riad look beautiful, I could not in good conscious recommend this location.
Friendly staff, good food, sadik the manager was fantastic and looked after us.
This Riad is absolutely stunning. The interior design is gorgeous and the location very good. The staff, more specifically Sadik, was accommodating, helpful and funny. Don’t miss out on a dinner in the Riad, it was the best meal we had during our two weeks stay in Marocco.
Beautiful, quaint property. Love the style. Sadik our host was great as well.
The rooms were a bit dark and there is a very busy market you have to pass through to get to the riad from a taxi. However, its easy to get to the souks via charming alleys and streets.
A stay at Riad Azzouna 13 places you in the heart of Marrakech, within a 10-minute walk of Marrakesh Museum and Almoravid Koubba. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, multilingual staff, and luggage storage.
