Nice location. Reasonable rate.
Location was great. Unexpected free coffee. They accepted a change of room (we improved a lot!). Bagel coffee shop just in front had great breakfasts for a good price (under 15$ for two). Paintings on the walls are interesting (if you're open minded). There is a water fountain where you can refill your bottle.
When we got there, the guy at the reception was a bit cold, not very welcoming (was on a weekend, past midnight). First room we had was kind of horrible (witches all around and a little window facing a wall, without any sunlight), but when we changed room got much better (with sunlight, facing the street). You have sometimes the feeling that you're in a squat house (depending on the room/floor and the amount of graffi). It's slightly dirty (I saw a cockroach coming out of the handwasher...). Pictures look better than what you actually feel when you're there. To be honest, next time in NYC I would try to find something a bit more comfortable/normal. Although, if you're open minded and you can't find anything better, it can be acceptable.
Absolutely nothing. Worst experience I have ever had and the only recommendation I would give people is to stay away and avoid this place. Wish I could give it a negative review.
Went to NY to Propose to my GF. This ended up being the worst experiences of my life. Originally booked because I thought from the pictures it would be something different & unique with the different paintings of the rooms. I WAS WRONG. There was construction on the street. I called to verify it was the correct place. After about 6 tries, someone finally picked up. Sounded like we woke him up. He confirmed it was the street but was NO help in telling us where we could park. After 30 min we finally found parking. As soon as we walked up to the door, I thought to myself, what did I just get us into. Tons of cameras & one single door. We had to be buzzed in & as you walk in you get this eerie feeling that makes you want to turn around. The stairs make you feel like you may fall through. You get your key after talking to the guy that looks like he lives in the office. Room was up 3 flights of stairs & while walking up each flight, it just got more eerie. People laying in the hallways, smelled bad & they were trying to cover up & mask it with incense. Windows were missing & dropped right down to the street. The only thing keeping you back from falling out was a rusted rail. Our room door was dry rotting. Go into the room & felt like we were part of an episode of Supernatural. Lighting was creepy & lamp hanging off the table. Room atmosphere was warm, sticky & smelled musty & of mold. Throat already started itching & felt scratchy. AC unit turned on but no air blew out. Water dripping from pipes, bathtub dirty & sitting on rusted metal plates lifting it off the floor. Under, it looked to have gotten wet many times & started dry rotting & saw a roach in the bathroom. Under mattresses were metal spring rusted frames. You felt like bugs & fleas were crawling on you. We turned around & left. Knocked on office door & could hear him putting his pants on.
The day we left New York we asked the staff at Carlton Arms to call a taxi driver who could take us to JFK. We did this to have some sort of validation of the taxi driver. However - we got completely fooled by the taxi driver who came to pick us up at the hotel (there was no doubt that the driver and the person working at the hotel new each other). in the hotel it says that it is 53 dollars to JFK (not including tips and bridge fee). We ended up paying 72 dollars (not including tips) and the driver increased the total amount a few times during the drive. We could not pay with credit card unless we paid an extra 20 percent of the total amount. I don't know if the Carlton Arms is aware that the "Delancey taxi service" charge so much extra money, but I think they should reconsider using them as it is a lot cheaper to hail a cap on the street.
