Everything was smooth, clear, and easy from rental to return. The only problem was initially inspecting a car outside on a windy rainy day. Not their fault, but ideally in a garage would have been nice.

Pros:

The two Sixt associates we dealt with, Ms. Cristiana Frene (Porto Airport) and Ms Silvia Tavares (central Porto), were absolutely wonderful -- very genuinely friendly and professional. Ms. Frene in particular spent considerable time giving me tips on how to make the most of our long weekend in the city. Absolutely fabulous experience, please do pass on the positive feedback!!!

Cons:

At drop-off, a number of nicks in the car were noted which were most certainly present when we had picked up the vehicle. We know this because we took detailed photos at the time of pick-up; however, as is usually the case in these circumstances with car hire companies, no Sixt associate was present at pickup to document on paper before driving off, but there was of course Ms. Tavares there at dropoff to note the damage. Ms. Tavares was clear that we would not be held responsible, as we had purchased extra insurance. However, this is an ethical issue of principle: Sixt's own insurance should pay for this, not mine. In any other context the approach taken would be considered insurance fraud. Again, we have the photos to show the damages pre-dated our rental.

They tried to use scare tactics to up sale insurance while I already purchased it online while booking online. I showed them that I already have insurance coverage and they said it meant nothing to them because it wasn’t purchased through them. I told them I will call the the company to ask for the reason then he changed his tone and said I didn’t need to get that insurance because the credit card I used to booked already giving me the coverage. I told him if he already knew that my credit card already providing coverage then why tried to sale the extra insurance!! Beware of their scams!!!

Cons:

It feels like this particular branch is under staffed; whilst everyone we dealt with was helpful & pleasant, it took a long time to get things done. On collecting the car, I had to wait in line for around 50minutes, it then took another 25mins to go through all the paperwork. In this day and age it shouldn’t be that complicated when so much can be done online in advance. It was unbelievably difficult to get in touch with someone to get my rental period extended a few hours- it took four emails (none of which were responded to by the office) and many (mostly unanswered) phone calls to finally get through to someone, however, when I did, it was sorted quickly & promptly. Any online chat assistance through the Avis website was hopeless, their best advice was to go to the office & extend the rental in person, not really practical when the office was a 90 minute drive away!

Pickup terrible. Reserved for 9pm arrival, actually arrived at 7pm. They would not give car until 9. They did not acknowledge prepurchased Kayak insurance. Had to purchase theirs. Returning car in Lisbon was flawless.

Terrible experience. When we arrived to pick up the car they wanted 200 euros more for a one way drop off fee. I had read the contract carefully and nowhere did it say we would be charged for this. The rental company was unable to show it to us; they just insisted it was their policy. We left and rented from enterprise and they were wonderful. No hidden fees. Will never book with Centauro again.

Having a Goldcar customer service cenre in Spain, to cover Portugal seems to be useless, as the Spanish staff have no phone number for the Portugese car hire centres, nor can anyone there speak Portugese. Hire cars to be supplied with spare wheels. The puncture repair aerosol cans are always useless. Instead of waiting for the rescue / recovery service for several hours and having the car towed and having to go back to the Goldcar hire centre for a replacement hire car, ruining the day out, we could have changed the wheel ourselves and moved on.
