The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building
2
9.6 Excellent (69 reviews)
C$ 250+
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was by far the best I've ever had in either a hotel or a bed and breakfast. Liz is the perfect hostess, she took such good care of us! She listened to my husband's old jokes, and even laughed. She made an excellent recommendation for a Mexican meal. She even let us spoil her adorable dog. For dog lovers like us, being able to pet Jay Jay was an added perk.
Cons: The weather was the only thing that wasn't perfect. We had one cold rainy day, but even then it was fun to sit in our cozy room and watch the river.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was cute, cozy and romantic.
Cons: That we came in the winter/spring this place is a real gem and I bet it sparkles even brighter in the summer.

Pros: Breakfast and location were amazing. No parking though, unless you want to pay for valet or ramp.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Located half a block from the Xcel Energy Center. Can't get much closer you are going to an event there. Also lots of restaurants & bars within a block or two. Would definitely check out Cossetta's across the street for lunch or dinner, and the bakery attached has amazing croissants, pastries and coffee in the mornings. Awesome location. Valet parking on site for $31 a day. Beds are super comfortable. Rooms were very quiet. Front desk staff friendly and helpful. I didn't try it, but there is a continental breakfast included with your stay. Would definitely stay here again.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: My children loved the pool!
Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Loved that the walls weren't so thin I could hear the neighbors.
Cons: The lighting in the room was very dark. We went trying to leave a lively girls night for the Backstreet Boys concert. It's hard to really get into that vibe when the lighting is poor. Please consider adding more lighting to your rooms.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Press juice and organic bites
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely art and decor. Air conditioner works well but noisy. Could hear people walking on floor above us. Some drunk folks outside but still a convenient location. $31 a lot for parking. Good having a fridge and coffee maker. A microwave would be useful. Having a pool and fitness equipment is great.
Cons: See above for both types of comments.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: breakfast was a bit difficult because a family member is very allergic to nitrites in processed foods but there was plenty of other things to choose. The room was very convenient for the concert. Having Valet only parking was a pain in the arse
Cons: We paid $3 a bottle for expired pop that was half flat, but not ambitious enough to return it to the front desk :o)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean room. Modern and updated lobby. Fun decor like oversized chairs.
Cons: Nothing
1.0 Poor
Cons: They charged my card 2 separate times and then when i called lied and said the reservation was for 2 nights.
6.7 Good
Pros: It's a great location and definitely family friendly. The breakfast had lots of options although several items were out.
Cons: The rooms were a bit cramped and not the cleanest. We stayed for 2 nights and housekeeping did not restock coffee cups, coffee, and ice bucket liner.
6.7 Good
Pros: Beds very comfortable
Cons: I thought it's over priced for what the amenities are.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great hotel, location, and staff!

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast selection was excellent, room was spacious (but loud when chairs were moved).
Cons: There are no room-darkening drapes in room 312, so the security lights at the portico shine brightly into the room all night. The sheer curtains just didn't suffice. The room was clean and well-kept with the exception of a red stain on the carpet at the foot of the bed.

Cons: The rooms are a bit on the tiny side, and I was less than pleased that I had to pay $15 for parking when the facilities I normally use don’t charge for this but I still find this a great place to stay!
7.5 Good
Pros: Location was wonderful - able to walk to the St. Paul Saints game and the shuttle to the MN State Fair was great!
Cons: Room wasn't especially clean - found candy wrappers on the ice bucket tray.

Pros: Room service (their staff), the river view, and the restaurant were nice.
Cons: The water wouldn’t drain in our tub. The room was cold and they have a thermostat that you can’t adjust. There’s no microwave in the room either. You have to pay for parking overnight (low clearance of 5’9) but luckily the gate was malfunctioning when we left after day 2 and we got out for free. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Pros: Great location for our concert, and a free shuttle! Good breakfast, and much less expensive parking than many other places we’ve stayed downtown.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean room and bathroom. Nothing extraordinary - just a good simple hotel. Very friendly staff. Very good breakfast. Indoor pool (not tested though). A bit too expensive in my opinion.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was convenient to get to. It had a shuttle bus that we used to get to the State Fair. Staff very friendly.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was fantastic
Cons: Parking charge
6.7 Good
Pros: The staff were friendly.
Cons: The breakfast was great; however, I felt bad for the families who showed up at 9:00 to find out that breakfast ended at 9:00 a.m. When I checked into the hotel on Saturday afternoon, I was told by the receptionist that breakfast was from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. They need to make customers aware that breakfast on the weekdays only goes until 9:00 a.m. In my opinion, Labor Day is a day off for MOST people and should be considered part of the weekend. Perhaps breakfast should be served until 10:00 not only on weekends but holidays too. When we ate breakfast on Labor Day, we were very disappointed showing up at 8:45 to see that most of the breakfast items were gone and not refilled. Also was very disappointed that several families showed up at 9:00 thinking that breakfast went until 10:00 a.m. Most of the people who showed up at 9:00 a.m. had little children with them. You need to communicate better about that. On another note, I had booked my room online for two nights. I remember reading "No surprises" with the cost at the end, which was $344.00. When I checked out on Monday morning, I was charged for parking for two nights. I was not impressed that customers get charged for parking. The place was nice and clean and I liked the location; but due to lack of communication to the people who stay there and charging for the parking, I, along with my family, will not be staying there again.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Rooms
Cons: Brkfst choice/shld have more diabetic or k8dney friendlyl

Pros: Wasn't included
Cons: Room only had 1 coffee cup. 2 people stayed.

Pros: Location
Cons: The bed was very uncomfortable. You need better mattresses. The mattress is the most important thing since the only real point of a hotel is somewhere to sleep. I didn't rest well because of the uncomfortable mattress.

Cons: Restaurants will not deliver here you have to use grub hub not sure why but I think it is because of the restaurant onsite. And that restaurant is way over priced for it's limited menu

Cons: The Starbucks store is operated by the same staff members who check customers in and out of the hotel and so there is a considerable wait time to get a cup of coffee.

Pros: Shuttle diver and one front desk member went above and beyond. Building , room and public areas were very tied and marginally clean. Lobby was very cold and lacking. Using Lyft was difficult because the main entrance was hidden and unmarked; they dropped you off where the door to the restaurant was with steps when you had baggage. And they didn’t know where to pick you up The worst thing was I am a Hilton Honors member and I had no idea I would not receive my points when booking through you! I had another reservation with you on two weeks in Phoenix and I have now canceled that and booked directly( for the same price( even slightly cheaper) and will get my points. The hotel is not named on the outside of the building and was hard to find when walking the city

Pros: The hotel is just OK - some things are outdated (bathroom fixtures) and are not working great. Room design is not the best for 2 people - the sink is in the same room as the shower and toilet. No places to eat in walking distance, parking is $20 /night,

Pros: The room next door was very loud late the night of my first stay. I hate complaining, but I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep. So I went to the front desk to let them know, and I asked if I could move into a different room. The staff person was very kind. She called the people and told them there was a noise complaint, and she found a different room for me. I had no more troubles at all, and I slept well. Very pleasant staff and comfortable, clean room.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great eggs and coffee.
Cons: I was there for medical testing and treatment. My driver was having a panic attack and we needed to get back to North Dakota. I had already paid for thee next two nights. The manager told me that if there was any reimbursement it would have to come through you. He would be willing to talk to you about it. I only have social security so anything that could help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
