Location. Friendly staff. Charming premises and internal decor. Good strong shower.
Cooked breakfast was bland. Room was charming but too hot and stuffy during the night despite open windows, and of course noisy in the morning. (Note - this was August and exceptionally hot weather)
I think I've reviewed this property before, and I loved it no less a second time (in fact came back just to bring the children this time). It's an historic building right opposite the beautiful Abbey - honestly, if you're after a bit of history and culture I'm not sure you can do better anywhere in the area. The staff are incredibly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. The suits of armour etc. are a nice touch for the kids who travelled with me for the first time and absolutely loved it, best of anywhere we stayed.
I love the old old architecture, but if you're unsteady on your feet you may struggle with some of the stairs and passages - my advice would be to call in advance and see if they can book you a room with easy access - it would be a shame to miss out for this reason, and they will go out of their way to help you.
The hotel exceeded my expectations because the staff were so friendly and helpful. There was parking on site and it was on the main street in St Albans, close to shops and restaurants. The public areas of the hotel were well maintained and had a great ambience. The family room was very spacious and easily accommodated 3 extra single beds. The main bed is a King Size, which was great. The bedroom was very quirky and complemented the history of the building. Plenty of toiletries and towels provided, aswell as tea and coffee. We didn't eat in the hotel as we thought £10 was expensive for breakfast for the children, however as it turned out we paid almost £50 for breakfast in a local cafe and didn't feel that we had value for money there. With hindsight we definitely should have just paid for breakfast and we would have had the benefit of a substantial meal with a variety of options. Overall good value for money in a really pleasant hotel.
