lovely village location. V friendly owners. delicious food, good wine.
The family which owns and operates this restaurant with rooms above is truly friendly and welcoming. The adult son, who was always around during the evening dinner service, has very good English. The parents have less English, but if you have some phrase book Italian (or better, as my wife does), they will work with you to communicate. And they truly appreciate your efforts and interest in the Italian language, and culture. The room was comfortable and spacious, and the bathroom was spacious and spotlessly clean. We very much enjoyed our two dinners at the restaurant. The cuisine is traditional to the region, the ingredients are high quality, and the preparation is well executed. The dining room - especially the inner, vaulted section - is pretty and relaxing. There is an excellent and extensive wine list. If you have some knowledge of wines of the Valpolicella region - which come in about 8 official quality grades - there are excellent choices on the list, from many local winemakers including those with the highest reputations both locally and nationally. There are wines in quite a wide price range, to fit most budgets. We had two excellent bottles of wine, which were not cheap but far less than we would pay for these wines or equivalent quality from this region in our home market. The family was very helpful with some advice we needed to make arrangements to visit the famous Villa della Torre, a renaissance villa owned and shown by the Allegrini wine makers. (Photo is of one of its famous fireplaces. The village of Sant' Giorgio is charming, and is in a setting both peaceful and panoramic.
The parking situation is not entirely satisfactory. There is no actual onsite parking so far as I can tell, and parking in the village proper is seriously restricted. We were there during the week, not a weekend, so we were told I could park in the school yard of the old, closed school house. This is an ample, graveled lot, but the entry gate is rather narrow and I scraped a door handle of the rental car on a stone gate post managing the wide turn from the street necessary to hit the gateway square-on with room enough on each side. We could park briefly in front of the hotel to unload our bags upon arrival, so that was not an issue. There is a village public lot somewhere north of the village center I believe, but it is not a short walk from the hotel and is also not a level walk. I had some difficulty navigating to the hotel for our arrival (I don't use GPS, which might have helped). From the west, Sant' Giorgio is cut off from the shore of Lake Garda by the Adige River gorge and the A22 autostrada, which limit the crossing points down to the lake. From the south, you have the congested and confusing roads out of or around the Verona conurbation. The signage to Sant' Ambrogio, necessary to then take the small road up to Sant' Giorgio, is poor, directing you some of the time and then dropping you at some key intersections. By the time we left (after three days stay), I had figured this out, but before that it caused some wandering around, lost time, and driving frustration. The road up the hill from Sant' Ambrogio to Sant' Giorgio is short (about 1.5 miles), but steep, narrow, and twisting. You need to be comfortable with that kind of hill country driving, the inevitable price of the hilltop, panoramic location of the village. This road was a bit more challenging coming back at night from a restaurant down below.
With a stay at Dalla Rosa Alda in Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Aquardens Spa and Serego Alighieri Winery. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. Limited parking is available onsite.
