Top tips for renting a car at Champaign University-Willard airport

  • A great feature of traveling to a smaller airport such as this is that the customer service counters and the rental cars available for rent are all on-site and easy to access. To find the customer service counters for the rental car companies that operate at this airport, you can proceed right from the baggage claim area to their location inside the terminal building. Once you have picked up your contract and your keys, you will find your car rental at Champaign University-Willard Airport (CMI) just outside the exit for baggage claim in the adjacent parking lots.
  • Returning a car rental at Champaign University-Willard Airport is as easy as renting the car in the first place. As you approach the airport on Highway 45 there will be ample signage showing you where the airport complex is. Once you are there, head to the same parking lot where you picked up your rental car and then park the car, note your mileage and gas level, lock the car, and then drop your contract and your keys in the provided lock box for your rental car provider.
  • Even though this is a smaller airport serving a relatively small town, there are still a couple of transportation options to get you from the airport to the center of the city. This includes public bus service as well as taxi service from the airport. The problem with the public bus is that it's not set up for a large group of travelers that may be carrying a lot of luggage. A taxi is a good option unless you need to make several trips during your stay, at which point the cost is going to get exorbitant. When you take all that into account, you will see that a car rental at Champaign University-Willard Airport is a great choice for transportation.
  • Because this is a smaller airport, the airport is generally not overly busy, making getting a Champaign University-Willard Airport car rental an easy procedure. That said, you will find busier times during the morning and evening rush-hour periods, especially on a Friday afternoon when people may be traveling into the city for a weekend. That makes the idea of making a reservation with one of the on-site rental car companies a great idea, so you know that there will be a car waiting for you upon your arrival at this airport.
  • Book your rental car at Champaign University-Willard airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

The vehicle was fine. There was a lot of external damage (paint chips, dents and scratches) that we documented before leaving. When I asked if they needed to see the photos at car return our service person simply replied no, so I am hopeful I won't have to address this again. Overall the pick up and return process was straight forward. Both staff members that helped us were mediocre ( didn't provide much information, seemed bored with their day) and could have added to a more professional experience. They did the job adequately, just nothing to write home about.

Staff was friendly, but did not have car I reserved. They offered to rent a larger car for more money. I ended up using Lyft instead of renting a car.

I had a terrible experience with Avis at Willard Airport in Champaign-Urbana. Despite booking months in advance and confirming twice, I was left without a rental car. The manager, DeAndre McPherson, assured me the keys would be set aside for my late arrival, but on the day of my flight, I was told this wasn't possible, and he was on vacation. I tried to resolve it with another rep, even becoming a preferred member, but nothing worked. Avis failed to inform me of options ahead of time, causing major travel disruptions. Terrible communication and management.
