The state of Goa does provide travelers with a fairly extensive system of buses; however, the buses only run for half of the day. If you are looking to really explore the state, then you’ll want to rent a car for the journey. A rental vehicle will give you the autonomy you’ll need and provide you with flexibility in your travel plans. It helps you to feel secure that you’re able to return to wherever you’re staying for the night. What’s more, a rental car will also grant you access to some of the more distant destinations that may not be city adjacent, including some of the spice plantations, for example.

The roadways in Goa are shared with a range of other travelers, including buses, bicycles, tuk-tuks, scooters, pedestrians, animals, and more. While driving in the state, you will want to be sure that you are focused on the road ahead of you to ensure you don’t encounter any of these unexpectedly. If you plan to drive along the beach roads, then you’ll want to be sure that you’ve secured a smaller vehicle. Often, the beach roads tend to be narrow. What’s more, you may want to learn at least a few phrases in the local language in the event that you are pulled over for any traffic infractions—this will be favorably received by local law enforcement officials.

For many larger rental car companies, the minimum age for renting a vehicle is 25, while some may permit renters to be as young as 21 years old. Some local companies may allow drivers to be as young as 18 years old. Prospective renters who are under the age of 25 can generally expect to be charged a young driver fee that would be applied to their rental costs. Additionally, you might also find that young drivers are restricted to renting certain vehicle classes, such as compact cars, or barred from renting luxury or other more expensive vehicles.
