KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Miami

  • If you’d like to tour as many Miami attraction sites as you can, it’s in your best interest to rent a vehicle. This is because, with a car from one of the reliable and cheap car rentals in Miami, you’ll be able to move from one destination to another faster than if relying on public transport. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden and The Bass are among the most popular destinations in Miami. If you choose to cover the 9 miles that separate these destinations aboard connecting passenger buses, you’ll take 30 to 45 minutes to complete your journey. However, with a rental car, you’ll only take 15 minutes.
  • Miami is one of the most populous cities in the USA. Thus, it’s no surprise that it normally has massive rush hour traffic from 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 7 pm all through the week. If you get caught in traffic during either of these periods, you may not be able to visit all the destinations you’d like to. Therefore, it’s advisable that you travel to the destinations you’d like to visit before or after the stated rush hours. If you have to drive your rental car during rush hour, try to avoid the Palmetto Expressway, I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, and the US-1, as these highways experience the worst rush hour traffic in the city.
  • Miami International Airport boasts a remarkable car center. It is located on the 3rd level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. To get to this center, you can board one of the movers present at the airport’s Mover Station. Miami Car Rental Center is home to notable car rentals in Miami like Advantage Rent A Car, Avis, Ace Rent A Car, Alamo, Budget, Hertz, Royal, and Sixt Rent A Car. Given that there are plenty of options you can rent from, you can rest assured that you will find cheap car rentals in Miami once you land.
  • Car rental in Miami is a must if you want to fit in to the glitz and extravagance known as the Magic City. Don Johnson and Philip Thomas were never seen driving a suburban car, much less catching public transport, and neither should you be. Miami is the city to rent a beautiful car and feel great driving it.
  • The Miami International Airport (MIA) Rental Car Center is easily accessed upon your arrival by taking a connecting shuttle bus from the MIA Mover station, located on the 3rd level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. MIA is located conveniently close to downtown Miami, only five miles north and 13 miles west of Miami Beach. This means you will be off the plane and at your destination in no time at all, with a long list of rental companies such as Alamo, Hertz, Avis, and Thrifty to choose from.
  • The State of Florida has many highways with tolls including the Airport Expressway (State Road 112). These toll roads require prepayment on what is called a SunPass and can add unexpected extra costs to your travel if you don’t research in advance. To avoid these expenses, look closely over the conditions of your car rental and choose the company with the policy that best reflects your needs.
  • Be careful when planning your driving routes through downtown Miami, as rush hour can cause significant traffic congestion along major roads. Major expressways such as the I-95, US-1, and 836 (Dolphin Expressway) will be clogged up between 7 am and 9 am and 3 pm - 7:30 pm. Your driving experience around downtown will be much quicker and enjoyable if you avoid Biscayne Boulevard, Collins Avenue, and Ocean Drive during the peak periods of traffic.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Miami for C$ 36 or less
  • Book your rental car in Miami at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Off-airport rental car locations in Miami are around 238% more expensive than airport locations on average
  • Mini rental cars in Miami are around 67% more expensive than other car types, on average

I always recommend getting a smaller vehicle for maneuverability, fuel economy, and ease of parking.
Verified travelerSep 2024
Just know that you may have to pay additional money for insurance and make sure you ask for and understand all of your insurance options before you give them more money. Also know that you can get around Miami just fine without paying tolls if you choose to. Don’t worry about the fear tactics, or at least weigh out the risks for yourself and make the best decision for you without feeling pressured by rental car toll policies that might be outrageous. Parking in Miami always varies from expensive to relatively inexpensive depending on where you’re going, how long you plan to stay, and if you are parking on the street or not. Just be prepared for that. There is almost always a fee to park if you are in the most popular areas (which is not the case in all cities).

Small car fits our two suitcases. Toyota Camry was wonderful. We bought a Sunpass for Toll-Roads. As non US-Residents it was not possible to register the "transponder" device on the Sunpass Website. App can not be installed as non US. We had to go to a Sunpass Service Center to register. You need US address and US phone number..
RobertJun 2024
Tolls. 12.99 per day for tolls. It was worth it.
RodrigoMay 2024
DO IT WITH RENOWNED BRANDS, EVENTHOUGH IT'S A BIT PRICY, IT'S WORTH THE MONEY, YOU DON'T WANT TO RUIN YOUR HOLIDAYS
JeffMar 2024
Smaller cars are easier to park. Also, definitely get the Toll Pass package, it's well worth it!
Verified travelerApr 2024
Definitely pay for the sunpass!

Have rented with multiple companies in Miami. This was one of the only ones where I didn't feel like I was being swindled into add-ons that I didn't need. It was very refreshing
TannerJan 2024
Rent from the traditional companies. It’s more up front but much better transparency and professionalism.
Verified travelerJan 2024
Use the shuttle bus located outside the Miami airport car rental area to go to the off-premises location. It comes by every 20 minutes. There are no signs indicating the rental company is located off-premises. The employees are excellent and a little tip for the drivers is appreciated. Credit Cards in your name only, I believe. No debit or borrowed cards. I also think you have to have proof of personal car insurance even if you buy their insurance. Seems weird but didn't have an accident. You should look into that.

Driving in Miami is nice. They don’t park on the streets. Everywhere has parking areas. But Miami is little bit traffic.

Driving in Miami, specifically the keys is not too bad at all. There are tons of speed traps and more police than I've ever seen before. Beautiful scenery and tons of stuff to do.
DanaOct 2023
Only book from reputable companies like budget, Avis, enterprise… etc. they will be at the actual airport and so much more reliable.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Don’t hassle around with till fees. Just include it in your rent.
STARNIKSep 2023
Fast service in and out You can use your sunpass transponder
Verified travelerOct 2023
Everything was fine with driving through Miami. However, I didn't know there were restrictions for driving out of state. There was no need for me to do that. It was the 1st time in years that I've heard that.
CourtneyNov 2023
Research the SunPass if you’re leaving the city or going through tolls. Our rental car company charged $11 per day for the pass. Didn’t seem like there was another option.
KarlieOct 2023
Understand where you are going and if it requires tolls. To get access to Key Biscayne, you are required to be on a toll road.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Miami driving is like a lot of big city driving. Plan extra time for traffic, especially during heavy times.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Thankfully I didn't run into traffic. But I was traveling very early in the day.

With Sixt is easy rental. I'm not a fan of the Miami Airport because you have to walk a lot around the airport to arrive at the rent a car area. But service was good if you are scare of Floridian drivers they offer $11 dollars per day insurance. But if you are not driving around much then maybe you may skip that. Usually other rentals take your personal policy ensurance as a warranty but no sixt. Good service, fast and easy👍
Verified travelerJun 2023
Download the apps to pay for street parking with ease. There are tons of tolls (small $ amounts) which do not accept cash or card but use a device in the car to mail you bills; if you don’t have that you’ll get charged late fees on top of the tolls.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Rent from a well-known company so that you do not have any surprises like with car whiz.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Rent with a major player and stay away from unknown rentals.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Very easy just pay attention to traffic signs.
TyJun 2023
If you are a young driver do as much research as possible on all of the resources available to you and confirm that there aren’t any hidden fees. Also if you haven’t been to Miami be advised that drivers do not use their turning signals as much as they should.
SyAug 2023
Read all fine prints. Get everything in writing. Call ahead of time to verify all details, and make sure all your questions are answered. If you are running late, let them know ahead of time.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Driving out of Miami airport can be a bit tricky with fast traffic and many junctions. Take time to plan your route before leaving
JacobJun 2023
Rent from the airport only, especially on weekends. Most other locations will take reservations but not actually have inventory.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Pay attention who you are renting for, by checking the “pick up office” those are the real renters
CliffJun 2023
Rent from one of the major rental companies at the Miami Airport Rental Car center.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Make sure your navigation is on and working. Native drivers don't drive like your hometown.
RyanJun 2023
Rent from the airport instead. There’s tolls everywhere too.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Be patient...u will run into lot of traffic
Verified travelerJun 2023
Just be cautious while driving in Miami
LouisJul 2023
Check the basics. Including wipers
Verified travelerJul 2023
There are plenty of tolls everywhere, so if you are planning to rent a car make sure to either invest in a transponder or be ready to pay the ridiculous charges from the rental company.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Lots of crazy driving decisions made by other drivers (i.e. cutting other cars off, driving on the shoulders, turning left from the right lane across 3 lanes). Be aware!
RenataMay 2023
Go to Fox car Rental!
