Overview Reviews
When you a stay at The Avalon Hotel on Catalina Island in Avalon, you'll be by the ocean, within a 5-minute walk of Catalina Island Museum and Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The front desk is staffed during limited hours.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very conducive and homey to stay and it’s in the heart of the city. Easy access to all our needs from shopping to activities or rides to weekend night life with karaoke night.
Cons: At the hotel on our first night the shower was so slow and only to find out there is an adjusted to make it like a strong shower however you call it. And on our last night my husband got sick into his stomach and we tried the telephone inside the room and it was not functioning didn’t know where and who to call we have to walk a little further, found a street worker but speaking Spanish only and refused to take us to the clinic. We still look around and here comes a kind couple who approach us and we told them we need to go to the clinic/hospital for emergency. And we walked for s short while and the husband took his golf cart and brought us to the mini hospital. Just a precaution if possible don’t be sick from midnight until about 8:00am because there is no transportation available.
7.7 Good
Pros: Nice hotel. Great location.
Cons: The hotel card keys didn't work, I wasn't locked out and the night manager wasn't available via the black phone for about an hour after I started trying to call him.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Avalon Hotel is a very well run business. The attention to detail is everywhere. And, the staff is exceptional.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: An incredible, helpful, and friendly staff welcomes you to this beautiful multi-story building just a door or two down from the beach in Avalon Bay. Majestic woodwork in the interior hallways and staircases, and beautiful outdoor patio area with koi pond. Breathtaking views from the balconies and top roof sundeck, 360-degree views of all of Avalon.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Everything was walking distance. Staff was very friendly. Very clean!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is close to everything. The staff and owners are very knowledgeable about the island and take the time to help you with all your needs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel offers free Taxi vouchers to and from the Catalina Express. We arrived on Friday night and there was a wine and cheese offering in the courtyard, only had to bring the wine glasses the hotel provides in the room. When check out came on Sunday, the hotel checks your luggage so you can still enjoy Avalon until you catch the boat back to your home destination!

Pros: Location, staff and room. Excellent experience!

Pros: Everything was super clean and well thought out. We were given everything we needed for the bathroom, complimentary pop corn and snacks, robes, and most importantly a beach bag. The rooftop terrace is beautiful.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Michael was delightful
7.0 Good
Pros: Nothing in particular
Cons: 1. The front desk closes at 4:00 pm 2. The rooms and bathroom are very small, meeting minimum dimensions. 3. I read the reviews from previous guests. They said the breakfast and the happy hour drink on the roof were very good. My fault; I didn’t read carefully what the hotel is providing . When I asked about breakfast and happy hour drink, I was told to read the Property fractions again, and found out these things were not included . The hotel has no common room where you can sit down. They provided a coffee pot and tea bags in their small office only.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked the BBQ on the roof, the view from the roof, and the location
Cons: The whole place could use a face lift. Looks like the last rehab was in the 80's

Pros: The location was perfect, right by the beach and the dock. Staff was really friendly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was absolutely amazing, quick to answer any questions we had before or during our trip. Provided beach towels, water, and tea/coffee. They have an amazing roof (what a view!!) with a BBQ and even a refrigerator of stuff you could BBQ from a local restaurant. They have numbers for everything (before and after hours) so you never feel out of luck. The location was SUPER amazing, close to everything! Easy walk from the ferry. They also have air conditioning! Which should not be overlooked! Loved loved loved it here.

Cons: I didn’t like anything It’s very expensive
6.8 Good
Pros: Located close to beach and the grocery store. Loved the porch. Staff was friendly and helpful. They are kind.
Cons: Very noisy and busy street all day and late into the evening. Place could use some updating inside. The porch was the highlight of this property. It has all the essentials but a little dingy inside.

Banning House Lodge - Avalon - Building

9.2 Excellent (67 reviews)
C$ 255+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Banning House Lodge in Avalon, you'll be near the beach, and 17.7 mi (28.5 km) from Catalina Island Museum and 18 mi (29 km) from Catalina Casino. Featured amenities include luggage storage and a library.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Enjoyed the daily breakfast they had a nice selection. The afternoon wine and cheese was a nice touch. If you want to get away from everything Banning House is the place to go!
Cons: When we booked the trip on line the room was described as having a spa Bath and Fireplace. We were excited to be able to have a fireplace, as the weather was gloomy and the thought of soaking in the tub after a hike sounded great! As it turned out there was a non working fireplace in the room and the tub was also non working. Very disappointing and seems that the property may be doing some false advertising. The room it's self and the view was very nice. Just be aware that if it says it has a fireplace or spa tub, it just might be a lure to get you to book a room. Once you are at Two Harbors you don't have other choices, so you'll just have to make the most of it!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location was great, beautiful and quite.
Cons: We would have liked a better view from our room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming, historical building with beautiful views! Enjoyed continental breakfast on the patio, overlooking the harbor. Lots of nearby hiking. We loved it!!
Cons: We liked everything.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location Very friendly and accommodating staff Spacious, comfortable rooms Historically preserved style Nice breakfast options Wine and good cheeses!
Cons: The only negative was the paper thin walls between rooms which enabled us to hear the person next door sneeze in the middle of the night, and hear every word of their conversation while we were trying to go to sleep. We realize, however, that because the property is maintained in a historic fashion, there isn’t really any way to change this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The peaceful tranquility, beauty. Danny was wonderful and knowledgeable. The breakfast was just enough. Loved the history of the house and the ability to meet new people.
Cons: Didn't realize how difficult it was to get to Avalon from there.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful views all around the property, the staff were super nice. Property was perfectly quiet and felt secluded.
Cons: Staff was way over worked. During our stay, there was typically only one person on duty. They some how managed to take care of everything from breakfast to housekeeping.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Nice, clean, accommodation in historic house. Great view. Helpful staff. The obvious, and perhaps only, choice in this very tiny, isolated community on a very rugged island.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Not too commercialized feel like very near to nature. We had a good time as we celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary
Cons: The price of food in the restaurant does not match the quality on how it was prepared and presented. We were told to have red potatoes but it was gold. The rice pilaf was saggy. Fresh catch was ridiculously price Salmon was $32.00 but no seasoning
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay at the Banning House of Two Harbors with a gorgeous view from our room. Staff are super friendly and helpful, and they offer free pickup/dropoff between property and the Two Harbor ferry terminal (no need to walk up the steep hill).
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Incredible setting, lovely old historic building, friendly staff, loved the wine and cheese in the evening
Cons: Sleeper sofa bed was old and very uncomfortable

Pros: Really cute outdoor patio with great views to wind down at the end of the night. The continental breakfast was also great, even had a mimosa bar!

Pros: The customer service was great, loved how it had a bunch of shops connected to it, made it very convenient and the room was beautiful. Most importantly the bed was clean and very soft!
Cons: The jacuzzi is very small can only fit two people at a time... But not a deal breaker at all.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location close to marina and families hotel. The bed was wonderful
Cons: The continental breakfast was a disappointment. Coffee and muffins. Oatmeal but no microwave to cook it. Maybe some juice or fruit would have been nice
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, had a good partial view of the ocean. Very comfortable. Friendly, helpful staff. Decor was nice and in keeping with the lovely old building.
Cons: Nothing negative to say
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location.
Cons: Stairs.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The room was very nice and comfortable. We had a room with a nice view.
Cons: There was a lot of stairs. We were on the 4th floor and it was a little hike. If you have any physical problems this is probably not the place for you.
5.8 Okay
Cons: Too much noise. The glass door made the room all night bright and can not fall to sleep.
4.3 Okay
Pros: Nothing
Cons: The room was so small and depressing. The bathroom was soo small you could hardly move around. I haven’t seen a plastic shower curtain in years. There was no counter space next to the sink for toiletries. There were lots of stairs with no help with our luggage. The breakfast was a joke. Coffee or tea and pastries out of a package. Nothing else. I will tell the CIYC not to use the facilities. We spent almost $1000 for 2 nights and we were ripped off. Thank goodness we didn’t book more than 2 nights. My husband was counting the hours till he could leave. They should be ashamed of the prices. I booked on line so was not informed of the depressing room. I would like to request a refund. Pros: Good location since we like Descanso Beach. Bed was good. Front desk staff friendly, tried hard to please. Breakfast normal: muffins, a bit of fruit, a few chairs on the front sidewalk.
Cons: Room was a bit dingy, bathroom like older, cheap motel. Courtyard area unimaginative, run down. Place needs a makeover if it wants to compete.

Pros: Location and complimentary coffee and breakfast! Staff and luggage room very accessible on day one. Nice to be told to have coffee and relax on roof why rooms are cleaned. Bikes and beach towels great to kill time why waiting for rooms. All around clean and nice place for a small beachfront hotel! We loved the location! Beds are really really soft
Cons: A bit noisy from other guests on upper floor. Low water pressure in shower.

Pros: The attentiveness of the staff and location. Oh and the fridge was pretty sweet! Top it off, the beds are comfy.
Cons: There is a window on top of the room doors have no curtains. Our room had a bright lamp faced directly across it. Our room at night was so bright that we couldn’t sleep. Either curtains or sleeping masks would’ve helped. The rooftop patio at night is also dark and barely lit.

Pros: The staff members are great and this is a great location to be at!! You're very close to the water and the shops! & they have coffee, donuts and oatmeal every morning for you downstairs!!
Cons: We weren't aware that the hotel does not have AC. It was difficult to sleep at night.. We had to leave our windows open the whole time & since smoking is allowed on the deck, our room was constantly getting filled with the smell of smoke.
6.0 Good
Pros: The hotel was in a good location. I liked the balcony on he 3 rd floor.
Cons: It was rather rundown, I could tell from ad it needed updating but it was more rundown than I expected. The biggest thing I ddnt like was that there was no AC It is one of those things I thought most hotels have. I was wrong! It was HOT.

6.3 Good
Pros: I liked Santa Catalina Island and the outside seating resting areas at Hotel Catalina like the third floor landing where I did Sunrise Yoga and the shaded porch on the first floor.
Cons: I overpacked and had to carry my heavy suitcase up three narrow flights of stairs there is no elevator so be prudent with your packing. There is no A/C nor telephone service in the room and there are these strange buttons on the wall in the room and on the first floor they have more of them that say do not touch the buttons.

Pros: The location was good and the staff was nice
Cons: The cottage rooms sucked. I wouldn't have paid the motel 6 price for these. Our window was right next to the street so all you heard all night is the golf carts. the rooms were hot, but you couldn't keep the windows open due to the noise.
4.3 Okay
Pros: Offer donuts and coffee in the morning
Cons: The place was so run down and literally your sink in your bed, so if you want to wash your hands in bed then a bonus here. The bathroom was so tiny and across the room from the bed and sink. Peeling paint on the ceiling and no screens on the windows. So run down.

Pros: The quiet seclusion was great. We came to the island to relax and we did
Cons: There was a brief incident at 3am where there were loud obnoxious people below us. There is quiet time from 10pm- 8am for the establishment, and the issue was dealt with

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great, super helpful staff, flexible and personal service. Location perfect. Breakfast in morning a very nice treat.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: We were pleasantly surprised when we made same day reservations and got such a nice room for cheap on a weekend. We came in on a late ferry and got a call on the way in from Jack at the desk asking when we would be coming in so he could send a car to pick us up. Check in was easy and everyone on the staff was really nice. The best thing about the hotel was its location. Steps from the beach and everything else in Avalon.
Cons: The room was nice and clean, nothing fancy but it did feel like it was on a slant. It was no big deal but kind of quirky. We would stay here again for sure.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: My first time to the island the hotel staff made my stay very enjoyable and relaxing
4.0 Okay
Pros: Close to beach
Cons: Old, rundown, noisy, expensive
6.8 Good
Pros: The charm.
Cons: There was no indication about not having any Elevators when we made our reservation. Also the botel's Electrical System needs to be updated. In their defense we are told that the Hotel will be closing for a major renovation in a few months.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Close to the main road and attractions
Cons: Staff was not as pleasant as I would have expected. Was told would get a txt when room was ready before 3pm and when checked back saw a txt was written at the top of the reservation and when stated that I never recieved a txt was just told well your room was ready. Asked for a cot for a grown adult to be added to the room and was given a baby crib. The man at the front desk was the only helpful person that day to fix the problem. The room was run down and had many pieces missing from the walls and the screens outside the windows were falling off the outlets were extremely limited and in very odd locations. The bathroom floor was slanted and many stains on the mattress. The complimentary breakfast was extremely limited and the women helping us was rude. Did not feel that this hotel was worth the price and would not plan on staying here again or recommending others stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every staff person that we interacted with from check-in to check-out went above and beyond to help us and to make our stay so enjoyable.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean, nice staff, near the water and a great value!
Cons: No elevator.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I really liked how it was right in front of the water. It was in a good location where everything was walking distance: food, arcade, cart rentals, bike rentals, kayaking, and more. The hotel also provided complimentary breakfast and allowed us to leave our baggage in the lobby before we could check in or after we've already checked out. The staff was really great as well.
8.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff was super friendly and the rooms were clean. I liked that we were right in the middle of where the action is, so it was quite convenient.
Cons: No elevator, and no place to hang anything up to dry. Tiny sink in the bathroom and no place to set down your cosmetic bag. Since this is a beach place, it would be nice to have an area to hang swimsuits, towels, etc.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was comfortable, hotel convenient to everything. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Would stay there again.
Cons: Slight musty smell in room.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: Proximity to all is perfect! All I need is a bed and bath with a tv, I got it! Best deal in town!

2.8 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing. Room had bugs, spider poop all over the place. On top of that it was very dirty, dusty, and terribly uncomfortable.
8.6 Excellent
Pros: It was centrally located to everything. Cozy & quaint. The staff was very friendly & helpfull. Thankful for the A/C!
Cons: The shower was a bit difficult to maneuver around in - tight quarters, but that was about it!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: 9.2 “Quaint and charming overnight stay!” Loved how quaint and cute the room was. Very cottagy and perfect for an overnight stay. Even though it was small, it had a microwave and fridge, and AC. And the showerhead was perfect! Didn't have to fiddle to get the right temperature or pressure. One of the best hotel showers I've used.
Cons: The wifi signal was VERY poor. If you are going to advertise free wifi, most potential customers assume that means high speed, functional wifi. This was neither.

4.5 Okay
Pros: It has been referred to as the "Bates Motel" from all my wedding guests and family that stayed at this place
Cons: No decor in rooms, small tv on wall way up almost to ceiling. shower small and not very clean
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing. I would say i got it for a cheap prize. I booked for standard with 2 beds but when we arrived there is only one standard bed. Elevator isn’t working, and they put us on the 3rd floor at the very back. Ended up one of us sleep on the floor. Bed bugs .
Cons: Dirty and has bed bugs
5.8 Okay
Pros: Staff was great, so was the location
Cons: Location of room, not even sure this was a room, falling apart
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: I liked the pancakes.
Cons: I did not like the room we were in. Description includes: 1 queen sized bed, headboard nailed to the wall. A picture over the fake headboard saying " California 150 years old" A window facing the construction zone covered with a fake flower sheet. An air conditioner under the window, the bed was approximately 1&1/2 feet from the air conditioner with a small table with a lamp on it between the bed and wall. The table was very worn, it had water damage on it also and on the other side of the bed 1 &1/2 feet another table in horrible condition, leading to the bathroom that was horribly dirty, rusted and gross. At the foot of the bed and approximately 4 feet from the bed was a closet, half the closet had a TV at the top of it with a disconnected cable box sitting on top of the TV, the other half of the closet had 2 hangers. Across the room from the entrance door is another door, you don't get a key to it and can't open it. The carpet is horribly dirty, the room smells bad from the dirty carpet. This had to be the crappiest room in the entire hotel. The only other thing in the entire room was a small chair, single table sized chair without arms. Summary, a tiny crappy room with a queen bed, that was harder than a bench on the street, 2 old worn out nightstands with 2 small lamps, a chair, a TV in half of the closet with no cable and a dirty bathroom.
3.8 Mediocre
Cons: The room we had. Even though i booked months in advance was a very small room bed way too hard. Room on Back of the hotel where construction was being done. Hotel not so clean outside and inside
7.5 Good
Pros: I liked that it was in close walking to the main drag. The staff was very nice.
Cons: I did not like that I felt like my room was in the basement and there was a slight musty smell to the room.
5.8 Okay
Cons: Quite a walk from everything . My room was around the back with a view of a dirt hill with trash on it
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great! The staff was amazing they let us check in early and when it was time to check out they let us leave our luggage with them while we wait for our boat they also had a car pick us up and drop us of go the boat. But sadly we got a room with no view besides that I highly recommend.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I love the customer service. Hotel is walking distance to everything!!
Cons: Everything was great.

8.5 Excellent
Pros: Able to store luggage before and after we checked out. Less than 5 minute walk to town. 10 minute walk to ferry. Basic room good deal. Staff very nice and helpful -thank you!
6.2 Good
Pros: The location was great! It was right in the middle of everything. Easy to find. Was Clean and had a home-y vibe. The patio on the roof is a great place to get a view of the whole island and for pictures too!
Cons: The windows didn't have curtains. Which is nice when it's during the day, but when the sun is hitting your face @ 5 a.m, not so much. Also, the room didn't have a heater which was inconvenient since the night got pretty chilly and also there were no warm blankets available in the room, Just the Bed sheets. Little Dissapointing.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: The location and architecture
Cons: Leave the outdoor decks open later than 8pm
5.7 Okay
Pros: Our room was on the 5th floor. The room was clean and the balcony had an ok view of the ocean and the street below while standing sideways. The balcony was small but large enough to allow us to stand while our scuba gear dried out on the plastic chairs. The hotel is in a good location and it is very easy to walk around the area. We live in Northern California and the diving is ok in Catalina. We probably won't make another trip to Catalina, but if we do, we might consider staying here again since the rates were comparable to other hotels in the area.
Cons: The hotel is old and although the room was clean, it was incredibly dated and much smaller than the photos on the website made it appear. The room is a good value midweek but very overpriced on the weekend; however, the whole island is extremely overpriced, so exorbitant weekend rates are to be expected.
6.0 Good
Pros: The balcony view and the staff
Cons: A bit pricey, air conditioner didnt work well
7.7 Good
Pros: I like the hotel itself and the location, as well as the staff.
Cons: Fridge would be great!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Liked the location, liked the storage for the baggage, the terrace was lovely
Cons: Curtains had holes, AC didn’t work; no one was at the front desk at noon when we arrived, room was not aesthetically pleasing
9.1 Excellent
Pros: The private patio was beautiful and it has an amazing room. It was also very nice that we could store our luggage there when we arrived early and the staff was very helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Complimentary coffee comfortable bed room clean great view 6th floor patio with great views of the city
Cons: Only thing that would have been better is that we had stayed longer
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing!!!
Cons: Where do I start, women hair in the bed sheets (yuck), worn out mattress (hurts your back), burnt rug, warped concrete wall in restroom, bolted down bathtub, torn and extremely wormed out curtains, A/C knobs unserviceable, old dirty and unserviceable furniture, drunk people knocking on your door at 4am. Will I ever come back to this place, no thanks.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: It's unique ambience takes you back in time! The private deck was the best place to relax... The staff went above and beyond to make our 10th anniversary special...Kenny, Vicki, Miguel and Mark thank you for everything! !
6.0 Good
Pros: Hotel property is pretty and convenient
Cons: Room was very dingy with paint coming off the walls, curtains with holes and poorly decorated.

Pros: We love the location, helpfulness and friendlies of the staff, and the quaintness of the place.
