No issues with SIXT itself. I see now that Kayak charged me for 13 days of rental when I only booked the car for 12 days. Also, even though I provided information on both drivers, SIXT was only provided the data on the secondary driver which delayed pickup and risked causing me to have additional charges. SIXT staff at Dublin airport were absolutely fantastic and did everything they could to ensure I avoided any additional charges due to Kayak’s errors.

The car was great. No problems at all, except I had some difficulty with changing lanes, as I couldn't see out the side/back window well. I liked the friendly, no pressure, but efficient staff. A free coffee was a nice touch too.

The lady at the counter when we took the car was not in the best of mood to say the least. We were charged €4750 as a security deposit. Not sure everybody has that much room on their credit card. She didn’t even explained why the charge was that high. As we were in a rush, I didn’t bother and thought I would take care of this later. After thinking about it, we didn’t even get any proof paper proof of the transaction.

Car wasn’t as clean as I would have thought they should be for new users The guy who checked us in and the guy who received us after were great! We decided to add a driver after we left and we called Hertz to add a driver and we were told we had to find a nearby Hertz and travel to it. The person on the call told us we could t add someone over a call. When we interrupted our vacation time and walked to a nearby Hertz, the guy said, “You could’ve just did this over the phone.” So, this guy knew his business. I wish people on the phone would be trained correctly because that cost us part of our short three days in Ireland.

I have rented a car and prepaid all taxes and service fees before travelling to Ireland with a fully paid and non refundable reservation number from Kayak. My husband was the driver of this vehicle and presented to the airport for pick up on August 19, 2023. He travels extensively for work and has a credit card that covers Collision Damages Waiver and Theft Protection. He explained this clearly to the agent Michael, who insisted that he would be required and it was MANDATORY (the words exactly used) to purchase these. He upsold him the Supercover insurance and told my husband that this is mandatory. I examined the contract when he returned and told me the nature of this conversation. Having lived and studied in Ireland myself for 5 years, I did my due diligence and inquired from other car rental agencies and examined the legislation within Ireland to determine the validity of these claims. My clear understanding is that Third Party Liability insurance is a legal requirement in the prepaid price of all car rentals in Ireland, protecting from property damage, injury and death. Fire insurance is also included in this prepaid price. If the CDW and TP is declined or that written proof is required and the customer declines this, a credit card authorization of a larger amount can be applied to the rental. These options were not presented and in fact, miscommunicated at the time of rental by your agent Michael. This should be investigated and the insurance reimbursed, or at the very least the supercollision insurance that was in fact, not required.

They gave away our car to another person and didn't say anything to us for 30 minutes. And then tried to give us two cars that were smaller than what we purchased. After an hour and 4 cars later we were given a car that was dirty and unwashed.

The rep who went over the car with us was equally competent and friendly. Lastly, the rep we dealt with when we turned in the car, Dan, was also friendly and helpful. The insurance situation was absurd. In order to decline their coverage they wanted a 5000 euro deposit and printed paperwork showing you had coverage through some other vendor. The person at the counter acknowledged that our credit card likely provided insurance but was not interested in discussing further. We were just shooed away when we tried to ask questions. This information needs to be clearly explained ahead of time, not on a random cardboard cutout on the desk at time of pickup. Instead you are forced to pay for overpriced third party insurance you don't need.

Pros:

Staff were very helpful at Avis but the insurance fees were outrageous and tripled the cost of the rental. That being said, I cannot commend them enough for how they handled our return of the car early due to COVID-19

Cons:

Quote insurance in advance and do a better job describing luggage space. We did not have enough space for 4 large pieces of luggage in this car

This was the most horrible rental experience I have ever had. The service desk was terrible and the manager was terrible at Dublin airport. We paid over $1000 for a weekly rental and then they said we could not take the car unless we paid an extra $500 in insurance . It was total bait and switch job. They also cancelled my brothers reservation without even letting him know. We went to Sixt rentals and they took care of us and couldn’t have been nicer. I will never ever rent from Avis again. Low class and terrible service.

Despite bringing evidence of insurance coverage from my credit card, they would not honor the rental. I called my US Mastercard and they confirmed I had insurance coverage. They would not accept it and wanted me to pay €60+ a day for coverage. I had rented from both National and Alamo in the prior week for 2 different trips and I had no issues. Avoid Europcar is my advice!

Totally misleading, quoted $125 for the car then pushed us to take a bigger car and wouldn’t accept the insurance we already had. Total got to almost $1,000 after they added their insurance. Cancelled and went with Budget. Got a very nice car with insurance for $600. Stay far away!

The wait time at Dublin Airport is ridiculous. The staff push you to upgrade services, like adding unnecessary additional insurance, and to pay more for a car with an automatic. They also said they had photographed the damage on the car, but had not photographed all damage, I insisted they photograph the car completely.

I pay in advance for a full coverage insurance and at the counter for check in they told me that they didn’t accept the insurance I hired and charged me a ridiculous amount for a new insurance. Payless cancelled / deleted my reservation without notice. I attempted to contact Payless through website, and they said there wasn’t a reservation. Good thing a companion had made another reservation

I used my credit card’s insurance guarantee, but nowhere in the reservation did it say that to do do ALSO required a letter from my credit card company stating (1) that they cover the Republic of Ireland, (2) they will cover the lace loss if totaled, and (3) the last 4 numbers of my cc account. So at the Europcar desk I had to make that phone call, wade through a few phone trees, then talk to a couple of humans. I did get the letter (great service by my cc bank!) but I was lucky - that approval process may take up to 24 hours. The Europcar desk agent said this happens “quite a bit” with the brokers because you don’t provide the information about what each rental car company requires to use the cc insurance waiver benefits. I suggest adding a link to your process that will take your to the specific rental car company page for their CDW. I did use the link provided for my rental but it did not say I would have to get the letter etc.

The overall rental experience was poor. Renting/reserving through your site was confusing and I was not able or couldn't figure out how to add insurance and a GPS Nav system through your site. Thus, the upcharge at the counter was significantly higher. No one was at the Payless counter in the terminal so a sign referred you to get service at the Avis counter. There was no Payless representation in the actual lot either, so again you're dealing with a person working the Avis counter. That's where I was getting upcharged like crazy when getting into a car, to the tune of around $100/day for the cheapest smallest size car. It does get better, good and bad. The piece of s**t car they put me into had 78K miles, the key fob didn't work and to top it off, there was a tire, not a spare (tire on a rim), but just a tire with a hole in the sidewall, stuffed into the little trunk. The good news, when I went back to the rental center on the lot to point this out so that I wouldn't get charged, a service guy in the lot asked what was going on. I explained and he got very upset that I was receiving poor and dangerous (if I had gotten a flat out on the road) service. He asked what insurance I had selected, when I told him I was paying full but through Avis (approx $60 euro/day), he said he'd get me in a better car. This guy walked in, grabbed another set of keys and sent me on my way. The on-the-side upgrade put me in a Toyota Yaris Hybrid with low miles, like 5K, the car performed just fine. So, in the end I was happy with what I was driving however it my daily rate with insurance was around $100euro/day. I ended up returning it a few days sooner than initially planned. Taking advantage of tourists with upcharges didn't seem exclusive to the car rentals; Ryan Air and some hotels along the way used the same practices. Specific to renting through your site, I was not pleased.

It took way to long to pick up the car (about 45 minutes). We had to wait in a line at the airport, then take a shuttle bus to the rental car lot, then wait in another 15 minute line at the lot, then wait another 10 minutes for our car to be cleaned. Very duplicative and unnecessary. Also, they made us get car insurance even though they had letters from people with the same credit card as us saying that people with that credit card have coverage in Ireland.
