While there is some public transportation on the island, it is not extensive, so renting a car will be your best bet for exploring Fuerteventura. Having access to your own vehicle will also allow you to explore other parts of the island that are considered to be more rural and do not have any public transportation at all.

Fuerteventura is a relatively calm and quiet island, so driving here is simple. You will almost never come across any traffic or congestion, as there are not that many individuals that are on the road. The roads are particularly well maintained and there are clear signs that make it easy to stay informed about the area and have critical information, such as the speed limit. You will typically not come across any roads that are especially narrow or steep, which will make your life behind the wheel easier.

To rent a car anywhere in Spain, including in Fuerteventura, you are required to be a minimum of 21 years of age. Drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 will likely need to pay an additional daily fee to their rental agency. If you do not have a driver’s license that has been issued by Spain, you can still use a valid driver’s license that has been issued by your home country. However, if you are using a driver’s license from a foreign country, you will be asked to provide a valid passport as well. Take note that the rental agency that you will be renting with will likely need to make a copy of your passport for their files.
