I appreciate the extent that the European Hostel makes it possible for me to visit San Francisco. I am born and raised there. It is very centrally located a couple of blocks from Market Street to walk and/or use available transit to anywhere in SF or BART System access.
A cleaner facility. I always clean up after myself and extend that when necessary whenever I stay. It might be good to have guests volunteer to keep the Hostel in great shape so as to continue keeping costs affordable.
The overall quality of the room was so poor. Not acceptable
Kitchen was good
Location was good close to everything.
All the facilities are dated... bed was squeaky and made horrible sounds on every move . Bedding had some washing supplies stains on it. I tried to use a shower but water was too cold to enjoy it....
The location was ok.
It was dirty all over the hostel. The kitchen was not well equipped, the toilets and showers were disgusting. It seemed like they just clean once a week. The bed sheets had white stains and the bed was really uncomfortable. There was no space to leave your luggage in the room and there was only one socket in the whole room.
The hostel was ideally located to attend a festival in the Folsom street area, and to attend bars there. The price was so much less then even the cheapest single occupant hotel I could find - even after considering how much I had to pay to park my car over the weekend. This was my first time to stay in a hostel in the US and I wasn't quite sure of the rules, etc. For the most part it was fine. My roommates both nights were fine - in fact I didn't see them much. BTW, I saw a lot of complaints by people about the homeless in the area. YES there are a LOT but try not to judge people by their looks. At no time did I feel threatened. True I stayed on the main streets after dark, but that's only common sense. I was mostly annoyed that in a wealthy city like SF these folks have to live on the streets.
The shared bathroom situation was the low part of the stay. Not only did I have to wait a lot (serious issue one time that I REALLY had to use it!) but there weren't the cleanest and kept up. Speaking of clean - I had to look for something under the bed and there was a LOT of old stuff under there. Clearly they don't clean that very often either. Also, just to rant for a second - the toilet and sink in both bathrooms on the floor I used dripped or didn't shut off well. In a place like SF with major water shortages, you'd think they'd address that.
