The Avis line to pick up the car was over 35 minutes long and one agent's shift ended just as I approached. Not bad for me since I was next but the line extended even longer than when I got there. Possibly if I have Avis Preferred I could have eliminated all that wasted time. Also, my reservation was weird where they made me put down over $400, the $250 deposit plus some. Somehow the 'voucher' where I already paid for the vehicle just wasn't jiving with their system. I checked days later and showed no charge from Avis so I believe it was ok but the 'checkout' didn't work well with their system at all. It took 45 minutes to get my vehicle with only 6 people ahead of me and 3 Avis employees working the counters. The employees were nice and seemed knowledgeable but the system is ridiculously slow.Reviewed 13 Jul 2025

When I showed up I was told that the rental I had selected was a “mystery deal” which was either a fully electric vehicle or a pickup, neither of which met my needs. They were able to switch me to an SUV. I was quoted at $370 for a rental, which seemed fair, but ended up paying $1000 at the end of the week.Reviewed 30 Dec 2024

The computer system was down for more than 4 hours before we landed. Avis did not alert us, rebook us, or direct us to another rental agency. Instead, we were forced to sit in a line of 40+ people for close to 2 hours to get our vehicle. When we finally did get to the counter, the vehicle we ordered/held was unavailable. They tried to "upgrade" me from an economical standard sized car to a pickup truck, knowing I had an infant in a car seat. We I refused, they put me in an SUV. I asked for a compact SUV, and instead was forced into the largest SUV they rent, a 7 passenger gas-gazzler. For reference, it was me and my infant only, and we had a 95-mile road trip to make. I have nothing good to say about my experience renting from Avis Detroit.Reviewed 28 Oct 2024

Vehicle had trash in it. Starbucks cups orange peels. Seats and floor dirty. Gas was not full. It had about 2/3 tank. Service was so bad that I didn't want to go back in and say anything as the rental was the only truck available.Reviewed 29 Aug 2024

Terrible, will never rent from them again. Stood in line for 1.5 hours to get my car..completely understaffed. Rented a luxury class and got a Toyota Highlander with cloth seats… the vehicle exterior was not remotely clean..Reviewed 29 Jul 2024

Waited 2 hours in line during check in in order to get a car. Slowest system I’ve ever seen for car pick up. Can’t believe in 2024 this isn’t a kiosk or there isn’t a more efficient way to check in. I’m all for face to face business but in this case 2 people to check in 20+ people in 2 hours detracts from the customer experience.Reviewed 10 Apr 2024
