First of all, we were quoted around 500 Euro for the largest car they had for 5 people with 7 suitcases and 5 personal sized bags, which looked plenty adequate. (We realize cars aren’t that big in Florence IT, but we had a picture of what we booked). Instead, (of course) there were no such cars on the lot and we were given a medium SUV which was not big enough for all 5 of us AND our luggage! We crammed everyone and every bag in (on laps etc). All done and said, it was 1100 Euro with taxes, insurance for dings, accidents, window chips etc. When we got to the car, not only was it small, it was heavily damaged with huge dents and scrapes. We certainly didn’t need the supreme insurance for that piece of junk. In hindsight (if we weren’t in a hurry), we should’ve demanded a different car or taken the supreme insurance off and gotten bare minimum for an accident only. My suggestion- don’t ever rent a car in Italy! Trying to drive in their cities is stressful and dangerous! Most of the Tuscan cities don’t allow non residents to park in parking spots so it’s best to park outside the city and walk in. We would take a taxi or Uber next time. We actually drove into Florence, and it was so crazy busy and we couldn’t find parking and drove right back out and went to Siena instead.Reviewed 7 Oct 2025

Representative placed me in the wrong SUV. Before I exited, the lady at the booth stated I was in the wrong car and I needed to return the car. This was only one upgrade in cars, so I thought the best customer service courtesy was to keep me in that car since I had done all the paperwork for it. They would not do it, but required me to switch SUVs that required at least 45 minutes of additional time.. Since it wasn’t my error and it cost me unnecessary time and effort, Avis could’ve been apologetic, courteous, and thoughtful by letting me stay in the equinox rather than switch to and escape.Reviewed 6 Oct 2025

Customer service at pickup was excellent despite the late hr. Vehicle was comparable to reserved make/model. Return of vehicle was problematic; vehicle was checked and keys returned 10 min before return time, waited 35 min in line and I was told "the system is down" so they couldn't complete return process. I am still waiting for a receipt and return of my deposit. I suppose I have to trust that the proper paperwork will be done "when the system comes back up". The experience was terrible. The ad on Kayak said it was airport terminal pick up, we chose this and avoided shuttle bus pick up purposely as we had 2 kids and wheelchair user in our group. When we arrived at the airport and checked the area for pick up we could not see an Avis station anywhere, we asked several people at the airport who also could not tell us where it was. I then checked the email for pick up (which I had assumed we would not need until picking up the vehicle) it said we needed to get a shuttle bus. We ended up hiring a different car with Hertz at the terminal, which was 3 times the price. We contacted Avis (through qeeq, it wasn’t even directly with Avis which was more annoying) who tried to tell us several times that the ad said “shuttle bus for pick up” after sending them several screenshots to prove otherwise they then wanted boarding passes to prove we were actually there and also the receipt from Kayak, we still have only received a minimal partial refund. Lesson learned on our end, no matter what the ad says always check your booking confirmation as companies obviously like to change the agreement after you’ve paid for it.Reviewed 5 Oct 2025
