Be aware of insurance difficultiesPros:The car itself was great for getting around Costa Rica, I don't recommend anything less than an SUV for that. The problem we encountered was paying for the insurance through Kayak via Allianz. When we arrived at Budget having insurance already, we were told that if we wanted to use our third party insurance (Allianz) we had to put down a $3,000.00 hold on a credit card that we weren't prepared for and was not easy to resolve. We ended up having to cancel the Allianz insurance and purchase insurance through Budget which brought our total from $140 (car rental + Allianz at time of booking through Kayak) to $400 (rental + Budget insurance). Not a cost we had prepared for, plus we had to spend over an hour resolving the issue once we arrived at Budget.Reviewed 15 Jan. 2017

Dangerous ride due to defective carPros:The stereo with AUX plug was good to have since the radio would die between mountains.Cons:We requested an SUV because we knew we would be driving around Costa Rica i the wet season and wanted a vehicle that could handle the mountain roads and the rain. We got a Daihatsu Bego, which is the smalles SUV I've seen, but we thought it would be fine. Well, the first thing I noticed was that the SUV had issues when I tried to take close turns. It made it almost impossible to get in and out of tight parking spots, and made it dangerous to drive in some mountain roads. The main issue I had thought, which really made it dangerous to drive, was that the wipers were basically useless. It didn't matter if it was raining a little bit or if it was down pouring, the wipers would cloud my vision and made it so I had a really hard time seeing anything in front of me. This is unacceptable. Finally, we had a flat tire which could happen to anybody, but that made me realize that they didn't give us the full kit to remove it properly. I was able to do it, but had to basically get under the car and get completely greasy since there was one piece missing that would've let me do everything from farther away.Reviewed 19 Jun. 2017

Watch out for the insurance scam.Pros:Facility was clean, easy to find - though not at the terminal as describe, shuttle driver was very friendly.Cons:Our one week rental agreement was made through Kayak at an extremely reasonable $130 including insurance. Upon check-in the agent asked for our drivers licenses and credit card. She then pulled up the reservation and asked if we wanted insurance, and pointed to a placemat on the counter with descriptions of the different levels of insurance. I indicated that we did want insurance, and that I had indicated so on the reservation system. I asked the agent to verify that the vehicle we reserved, a 2.4L 4-cylinder Kia Sportage mid-sized SUV, was the same that was available, the agent indicated that our reservation was actually for a 1.5L 3-cylinder Daihatsu Bego compact SUV. I asked for either the vehicle that I had reserved, or a comparable vehicle that would meet our needs. I was offered a 2.5L 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4 for an additional $15/day. I agree to the uncharge as the Bego could not meet our needs. The agent printed the rental contract and handed it to my wife as I read the coverages of the different levels of insurance policies on the placemat. My wife signed the contract, then without handing it back to the agent, asked me if the contract looked right. I glanced at it and saw that the contract rate was now over $507 for the week, nearly 4X the cost agreed to on the reservation. I said no, that's not right at all and asked to agent why the cost had gone from $130 to $507. The agent responded it was due to the car upgrade ($15/day as noted above) and the insurance coverages . I stated that we would need to redo the insurance coverages in accordance with the reservation. The agent then stated that she had already swiped our credit card and that we would need to talk with the the corporate office which was closed for the day as it was after 9:00 pm. We left for our hotel in San Jose struggling to understand how our bill had risen so high. The placemat had described what appeared to be a typical insurance arrangement: $5.99/day car only. $19.99/day + Property Damage. $24.99/day + Hospital Insurance. This was completely misleading. It appeared as though $24.99/day would buy a premium level coverage that would include the car, property damage and hospital insurance. That was not the case, what was presented as three levels of increasing coverage were in fact 3 completely independent policies. $5.99 bought car insurance. $19.99 bought property damage insurance. $24.99 bought hospital insurance. The total insurance bill was thus $50.97/day, for insurance that we did not need or specifically agree to. The following day I attempted to rectify the insurance issue with Budget Rent-a-Car to no avail. I was told that because the contract had been signed and the credit card charged that even if we should return the car we would still be billed for the full weekly amount including the ridiculous insurance policies. Never again.Reviewed 6 Jun. 2018

Bait and switchPros:We got a Toyota with a Trunk.Cons:The cost more than doubled. We researched before we left and found cars for 12-40/ day. At the airport we were told the cost would be 900-1500 for 10 days. Needless to say we left in a taxi and reserved a car thru kayak for a day or two later for approximately $11/day for 8 days. We told the gentleman at the counter repeatedly we do not want any extra insurance since insurance generally is a scam. We had a copy of the insurance provided by our credit card company yet he insisted we needed to buy more more more!!! We said no, no, no. We also asked if there were any cheaper cars. We were reserved for a 4x4 SUV but preferred an economy or compact. He said he had a cheaper smaller vehicle. All said and done the car that kayak said would cost $179 ended up costing almost $400???Reviewed 24 Apr. 2017

My worst traveling experience( and I’ve been to 30 countries)Pros:The Toyota Highlander drivability... that’s probably itCons:1. I called into budget the day before and they said the hold would be $200-$400 for the car. Actual price $1000 2. The doors did not lock, from keyfob, hard Key or hand. They’re trying to bill me for a new Key even though I have my card insurance, the kayak coverage and the B.S Costa Rican insurance they said was mandatory 3. They threatened to charge my card an extra $250 for a cleaning fee for excessive dirt on the car. Which is also insanely high and unheard of. 4. The listed drop off location is not the actual location. It’s about three miles off site 5. Car rental company doesn’t reply to emails, or messages and calling in there is a language barrier and they apologize I’ve rented cars now from 14 countries, this was by far the worst experienceReviewed 1 Nov. 2017

Pros:The staff and car were great.Cons:The "insurance" needs to be more clear and affordable. It is not the staff's fault, this is a corporate problem. The cost of insurance is double the cost of the car. It is a scam.Reviewed 24 Jan. 2020

Horrible pickup, car unsafe.Pros:The car didn't break down, the return process was fast.Cons:We arrived later in the evening, exhausted. The counter was grossly understaffed and VERY slow moving. Causing us to wait over an hour before even reaching the counter. Once at the counter we were told the car we had reserved weeks in advance was not available (it was needed to have a car with some clearance for our plans), but because it was late at night we had no choice but to take what was offered to us. The replacement car had several spots with noticeable body damage and almost completely worn down tires, I was genuinely concerned about the safety of the car. Then we were told we HAD to buy VERY VERY expensive "mandatory" insurance despite having pre-purchased a policy. Then we were told we HAD to sign a BLANK credit card slip authorizing essentially any amount Budget wants to charge. I asked for them to write in an amount before I signed and they refused and told me that ALL car rental places in Costa Rica do this, I travel to Costa Rica a lot and this has NEVER been done before, so that was an outright lie. I would have switched companies but I couldn't because of the hour. I will definitely not be using Budget, and I will be advising all of my colleagues not to as well.Reviewed 12 Feb. 2017
