Car start with problems in the border with Canada. I called roadside assistance. Start a claim, call get disconnected. I've to go all the way back to USA the closest location for a rental exchange. I left a pair of sunglasses in the rental and after realizing it 15 minutes after drop off and returning to the Hertz drop off to retrieve my sunglasses, customer service was extremely terrible and that I had to wait 30 minutes only to be told that they could not retrieve my sunglasses as they were unable to locate them. Knowing with 100% certainty that they were in fact in the vehicle and given how the events unfolded after the fact, I will never book with hertz or dollar again. I am a frequent traveler, and I will not support these companies. I feel so bothered by this incident that I actually took the time to fill this out when generally, I never write anything as I’ve always had pleasant experiences with other rental agencies. The check in line for dollar was much shorter and moved quicker than the budget line so that was nice. But then we were sent to a spot with no car, then directed to a car with no keys, third car had a dead battery. Fourth car brought up for us by a very friendly hertz employee. Checkout was easy. The gate staff at check-out were good. On a critical note, I was cheated two different ways. First, they gave me the car at 7/8 tank of gas, I returned it with the same, and they charged me $9.99/gal. to top off the tank. Second, they charged me $4.00 for an upgrade I didn't request. It has been beyond difficult trying to resolve these overcharges, they basically are happy to overcharge me but unwilling to make up for it in an honest manner. My husband picked up the car in Cleveland and we dropped it off in New York. We had to drive with the windows down the whole time because it smelled so bad inside from smoke. I have no idea what someone did in there because it wasn't a mild old smell. It was so bad that our clothing smelled like we had been smoking when we got out of the car.
