Ghanaian motorists drive on the right-side of the road as Americans do, which should make you more comfortable behind the wheel. Only use a hands-free cell phone and check all passengers are wearing seat belts before you set out on your travels. Traffic congestion tends to heavy in downtown Accra during the afternoon hours from 1 pm-3 pm, when there are elevated volumes of pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles on the roads.
Anyone 18 years or older holding a valid license for one year can rent a car in Ghana, but all drivers under 25 years of age will be subjected to daily surcharges and vehicle restrictions. If you are 75 years or older, some providers may impose senior fees.

When you’re driving a Ghana car rental around the country, keep to the stated speed limits. Unless otherwise indicated, cruise at speeds of 100 km/h (60 mph) along the highways and keep to 80 km/h (50 mph) around rural areas outside of city centers. On roads in residential districts, 50 km/h (30 mph) is the legal speed. Always reduce speed around school and hospital zones and remember that traffic cameras are commonly used in cities and on major roads.
