Picked up the car at Philadelphia airport. The car was not cleaned and smelled of heavy smoke and Weed. Called to report it and ask for an exchange. They were not helpful and said my options were to have it detailed for $100, put some air fresheners in the car or drive back to the airport and see if they had a full sized SUV available but we’re not able to guarantee this. We rented this size of vehicle to move my son to a new university so smaller wasn’t an option. I did my best to clean the vehicle as I didn’t have time to try and navigate getting the car detailed and $100 would not cover it. I put arm and hammer hanging deodorizer in the vehicle and drove mostly with the windows down. Upon the beginning of our drive about 1 hour outside of Philadelphia we had a flat tire on the Pennsylvania Turnpike which was dangerous. Fortunately an emergency pull off zone was there as this started to happen so we were able to pull off safely. The only authorized company on the turnpike came 2.5-3 hours later to change the tire and direct us to a tire shop. This cost me $90. We proceeded to search and find a tire shop to check the tire out. They said the leak was from a failed patch but they could repair it from the inside. They did so and we were able to restart our journey. This delayed our trip 6 hours and caused a lot of stress to our trip. Hands-down the worst experience I've ever had with car rental. Booked the car in the morning from my hotel room. Took a $35 Uber ride over to the location. There's no one there. Sat around for 10 minutes until someone showed up, took my name and told me there are "no cars available". Even though I had literally just booked one an hour ago through the website. He said it would probably be at least a couple of hours before they got any cars. Suggested I try moving my reservation to the airport location instead. OK.... Could he do that for me? No -- apparently I have to call the 800 number. Call the number. Get stuck speaking to AI, which refuses to let me speak to a person, no matter what I do. Eventually the AI bot tells me I can't change my reservation because it's past the cutoff time. So I hang up. I then ask the guy at the desk if I can just cancel. He says, sure, but you have to call the 800 number, because he can't cancel for me. (Apparently Hertz has never heard of this thing called computers). So I call the 800 number again. I ask the AI bot to cancel the booking. It tells me that it can't because it's past the cutoff. Eventually get through to a person, who cancels it for me. Then have to take ANOTHER $35 Uber ride to the airport, to see if I can rent from another company. Total waste of an hour and a half of my time and a lot of my money.Reviewed 24 May 2026

We chose Hertz through Kayak and payed online. When we arrived at the airport to pickup the car. Kayak did not give us a good deal or hertz did not agree. We had to pay hundreds more and it turned out to not be a good deal at all. I should have gone with Avis as I prefer them and get rewards from being a preferred customer.Reviewed 22 May 2026

The car is fine. I checked in myself. Had a hard time finding my parking space. Had to walk back and forth through the parking lot. But the worst part was when I needed to extend the rental, I had to spend 1/2 an hour on the phone constantly being put on hold because I had booked my rental through Kayak rather than directly through Hertz. More and more I’m learning these 3rd party apps do nothing but make things worse. I was offered a link to extend the rental via email. But the link did not work because of Kayak. You allowed me to book at a time the company was closed so I didn’t actually get my rental until the next day, they then claimed I was late so they gave it away and wanted to downgrade car class but charge me the same amount and refused to upgrade without charging me. Last minute car came in that met my class and they exchanged the car they just gave me. It was a poor experience.Reviewed 18 May 2026
