10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing experience! The dinner was such a fun time and absolutely delicious! The view from the onsens was spectacular and the service was superb!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Top quality seafood and meals served in spacious and comfortable room. Lovely sea view onsen. Excellent omotenashi.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location, right on the sea with fabulous room, private onsens were very nice and the food was fabulous. Truly surprised us with dinner spread over 2 hours, in room with a dedicated server who looked after us very well, sushi/sashimi boat, abalones, grilled fish, kobe beef, just yum. Station pick up, great balcony, royokan experience, worth the expense, completely exceeded expectations
Cons: Its amazing for 1 night but second night food gets repetitive and too much and we ended wasting a lot, so would have appreciated a totally different type of meal on 2nd night like tappanyaki or yakitori in a more limited quantity.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was exceptional! The English speaking members were incredibly helpful and kind and went far beyond the expected to help us find places to enjoy in the area. The food was wonderful. The setting peaceful and lovely sea views and close to local highlights. So glad we chose the Hotel Hamanoyu. We highly recommend.

Pros: Japanese futon is comfortable to sleep and very clean

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing, and i mean EVERYTHING! The attention to detail with everything they do is impeccable! The breakfast and dinner was delicious and well thought out ! The room was spotless! it didnt feel damp like other Ryokans that ive been to. they provided you with extra towels and they didnt skimp out on the toiletries and face/body soap. i would 100% visit this place again when i come back to japan.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice staffs and service. The private hot spring is really good and comfortable. My accommodation including dinner and breakfast that are all fancy and delicious.
Cons: Not center-located, although they have shuttle bus to the station. But my friend drop me there by car and I only go for hot spring without any touring plan so it’s not a big problem for me.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent hotel with modern and clean rooms. Loved the private bath with sea view. Alternatively, there are also 2 common indoor & sizeable outdoor onsen available for private use from 9pm to 11am the next morning. Top quality kaiseki breakfast and dinner - every dish was delicious!!! Hotel staff were also very friendly. Enjoyed our stay so much that we are already thinking of a return trip here.
Cons: We arrived by car and the hotel was a little difficult to locate... up along a narrow road after a few steep turns. There were 1 or 2 signages along the way but could be challenging at nightfall.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I traveled alone, it was a magical experience. Everything was beautiful, the room was big and confortable, I loved the view from my window and the open air onsen with wood and stone outisde. I specially loved I had a little forest with some bamboos all for myself, and I was also able to see the seashore from there too! The best of both worlds at room 302. The public open air baths and inner baths were amazing, from 9pm to 11pm youn can use them privately. They're really big facilities, all for myself, it was great. I enjoyed visiting them at night and day, and you have every necessities covered, including body lotions and hair dryer or weight machines in all baths. You also have ice water available in the baths. I had water and a tea set in my room too. The view from the open air ones was really nice, you could see the sea from there too. It was really peaceful, you could bath and enjoy the calming sound of water. One of the baths also had a cocoon hanging chair where I was able to chill when I wanted to dry and leave or just a break from the hot water for a little bit. I also had dinner and breakfast. It was amazing, they included different courses of traditional Japanese food for dinner and you had a big variety of drinks to choose. I was seated by the window, it was a nice place. I was able to roast my own fish and clam in a charcoal grill, and for breakfast they provided a little oven to keep the miso soup warm. I don't speak much japanese, but the staff was kind and very helpful. Some of them speak English and they were always available to help me if I had a question. Their driver went to receive me at the train station, the communication by booking mail was awesome, and they also provided me the train schedule for the next day so I couls pick the time and dropped me there by car at noon. The staff also helped me pick the ticket to visit a zoo nearby, and accompanied me inside.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They have a shuttle bus from/to the train station, easy contact, very gorgeous place, fell in love with it the first look, the staff super nice, the onsen super comfortable, food are perfect, i can not find any reason not coming here again. Definitely recommend, for sure will be here again for next visit!

7.5 Good
Pros: Public bathroom was so excellent.
Cons: Location is quite far from station; however, they provided us shuttle bus from/to station.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is clean, and decorated in traditional Japanese style. Hotel provides traditional Japanese clothes to female customers. Also, we did not stay in a very busy time, so the open bathing area in 3rd floor is free to use. The view is just awesome!
Cons: The hotel is a little bit far away from the train station or a convenient store. We arrived there after 5:00pm and hotel cannot send a car to pick up us, so we walk to the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: warm hospitality, nice onsen and the meals are very impressive.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very good onsen with several private open air onsen w/o reservation / fee available - some with sea view. Very good typical food with a large variety and focus on fresh sea food - served in a private dining room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This ryokan surpassed our expectations without a question. The checkin was very warm and helpful. We were greeted with a english speaking staff member, who brought us our welcome drink and explained everything in great detail to us. The staff was always going out of their way to help us. The room was very spacious and clean. We had a room with an outdoor tub, facing the ocean. The waves are relatively loud at night, we found it quite soothing. Both of us have tattoos, so its quite difficult to get into alot of onsen in Japan. We chose this ryokan because there is 4 types of very beautiful private outdoor tubes/onsen which you can rent for free as many times as you like. Theres a free shuttle pickup from the station to the ryokan and back. You can use the free shuttle even on sightseeing trips. The location is quite close to the ocean in a really quite neighbourhood. The next village with restaurants and a convenience stores is 10-15 mins by foot. Its a perfect location for a relaxing atmosphere. We will definitly come back.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The lil village where Hiina lies is totally not like Atami Ito Shimoda or any other town on this peninsula. This is definitely a quiet and peaceful place to live for several days. The service in Hiina is perfect. We missed our check-in time and dinner time on our first day. However the staff waited for us and added that dinner to the breakfast the next morning. Have to say that combination was soooo sweet that we stuffed for the rest of the day. Staff in Hiina are always smiling and caring. The location is good. You got shuttle bus to the nearest railway station Izu-Atagawa while it only takes 10-15mins waling. The view and hot spring is also good. We enjoyed em' every day and night.
Cons: Not a clue coming to my mind...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A Beautiful Place. Quiet, beautiful, to relax. with many attractions close by.
Cons: everything perfect.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Yukata rental, traditional spirit
Cons: A bit cold at night
4.6 Okay
Pros: The view of the ocean.
Cons: The hotel was older and run down. Staff were friendly but service overall was not good. The hotel requires a fee for basic amenities like a bucket of ice. We have stayed at Onsen's much newer and nicer with more service offering for less price.
Kissho Caren - Higashiizu - Building
5
8.7 Excellent (352 reviews)
C$ 587+
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Kissho CAREN in Higashiizu, you'll be by the sea, a 3-minute drive from Atagawa Tropical and Alligator Garden and 10 minutes from Izu Oceanic Park. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, a library, and an elevator (lift). Free self parking is available onsite.
6.3 Good
Cons: Lack of the usual good care and omotenashi from the personnel at check in and common areas. No services for drinks outside the room or restaurant.
7.5 Good
Pros: The free pick-up at the station was smooth and the staff at the ryokan/hotel was very friendly and professional. The view of the ocean from our room was fantastic and the onsen as well, where you could see the ocean. Free drinks (sports drink or tea) offered after the onsen was a nice addition too. The room was big in general and the bedding very comfortable. Also, the afternoon tea included upon arrival was very nice with delicious pancakes.
Cons: All of us (3 Westerners and 1 Japanese native) felt that the breakfast and the dinner was, in fact, terrible and not worth the money we paid. It was said to be a French (fusion-style) course dinner, but nothing we ate even remotely resembled anything French. It was over-cooked fish and dry meat, and a very odd mix of local ingredients and flavours. Like other reviews said, there were indeed many dishes at dinner, but none of them was delicious (not even the sashimi in which we found some bones). The Japanese-style breakfast was also nothing special, the local fish was good but the staff did not introduce any of the food, but simply lit a grill that we did not know what to use for. Comparing with similarly priced ryokans, Kissho Caren did not offer the same standard of cuisine.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous sea view, could see sun rise and "moon road" from room. Elegantly designed hotel. Great onsen, especially the one on the upper floor. Easy/Free access to seaside public onsen with sea just in front! Great food. Excellent spa treatment.
Cons: We took big luggages, difficut to put it on their shuttle when no advance reservation could be made, but the problem is solved on the way back, with helps from staff, and special shuttle arrangement. Took long for dinner (French style, about 2 hours)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very attentive staff and fabulous view from the open-air bath. Had access to a private open-air bath -booking in advance needed-.
Cons: Needed to tell to the hotel upon check-in the time of the dinner, then the breakfast and the return bus -also the private bath-. Then, calculated the timetable accordingly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Having been in and around Izu a few times I can confidently say the value for money here was insanely good. You get a nice large room, including mini sento though the big shared one is where you’ll want to go anyway since the view is great. Breakfast, snacks, coffee, and even beer or sports drinks after a hot bath are all included. Bento is also handed out for free on each day for your beach or sightseeing trips. As well as the French or teppanyaki dinner courses each day, ranging around 7 dishes each day. Very nice friendly staff (though as usual knowing a bit of Japanese is recommended).
Cons: There is no direct beach access but there is one close by and you will want to drive to Shirahama beach anyway since it’s so beautiful. No really a downside of the hotel, since it’s a fun 25minute drive and you get a great hotel for trading the commute to the beach.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: wonderful experience for the hot spring and really great staffs
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very nice ryokan-style room. Spacious, with a great view of mountain (or hills) and a bit of ocean view as well. Polite staff, not great at english, but they were prepared with english information. We had no problem to communicate a food allergy and dinner was prepared nicely for us. However, I think its important to communicate beforehand about food allergy. Shuttle bus goes to (and from) the hotel to the train station. Onsen baths are great!
Cons: Dinner did not take place in the most amazing location. Its too big and bright and even though the food was nice, I think the experience could have been much better with another light setting and I think they would benifit from divide the room in different, smaller, parts.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: nice service and there is a FamilyMart near by. you can drinks and food there. Hot springs are good. Shuttle bus is provided by the hotel.
7.5 Good
Pros: The view is excellent. Room is spacious. It's a great option if you want to escape from the life in city.
Cons: A little bit far from Atagawa station. If you take your baggage, it may a little bit hard to walk to hotel.

Cons: We love everything
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I visited Japan. I stayed Tokyo 5 days. Suddenly we thougt that we taking Onsen. We decided to go Izu. It is luckly for us to find this inn. This inn has ten bathes, included sand bath. An outdoor bath is excellent. Foods is delicious and interesting. The cost performance is very high.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Love everything, great facilities, onsen, food, location and service
Cons: Nothing
4.6 Okay
Pros: The hotel is a little run down, but clean and and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast was nice, but not served in the room.
Cons: There is literally nothing around the hotel. The town is very run down. This is my 3rd time in Japan and we encountered the worst costumer service in Japan, or simply anywhere around the world. We had trouble with our credit card payment, and the lady at the front desk gave us the biggest attitude ever. Her attitude changed 180 degrees in a second, after we tried twice and both failed - from all smiling, bowing, to refuse to say anything to us and it looked like she was genuinely disgusted by us. I'm still shocked till today that someone can do that. It turned out to be their credit card machine's problem, because I made a big purchase right after leaving and it worked perfectly. But even if it is our credit card's problem, NO ONE should never react that way. It was simply unacceptable. People always mention Japanese people have this "fake nice", and this is the first time I experienced it. I did not spend $800 dollar there to receive their attitude like this. It literally ruined my trip to Japan and made me question the entire country as a whole. Because of this experience, I don't plan to go visit Japan in the next couple of years at least.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. It is just few minutes from train station. Meal is delicious.staff are nice and helpful.
Cons: It would be better to provide cold drink water inside the room.

Cons: Musty smell in room

Pros: Almost everything! Staffs are really friendly and helpful. We were late to reach but did gave them a call beforehand and there's a shuttle waiting for us at the station! Love that they have a bath that we can reserve for private use.
Cons: Only the overall room n place a bit old and dated but gave a very traditional feel to it. Location is a bit out of the place with nothing much in the surrounding within walking distance. So just stay in and relax!

10.0 Excellent
Cons: Buffet. Tempura was wonderful. Yakitori and steak was tough and cold
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was a wonderful stay! The tatami room comfortable with full length windows that opened up for the sea breeze and sound of the waves. The facilities bit old but we found it quaint and charming. Lovely onsens including one by the sea and option to use Caren (sister hotel 30 seconds away by free shuttle) onsen for fee. The breakfast and dinner selection generous and fresh. Good taste but nothing to rave about. Lunch choices limited - bento provided by hotel and there’s a small donburi (rice bowl) place couple minutes down the road along with a local conbini slightly further down (so we could pick up coffee, snacks and beer). We felt warmly welcomed and looked after. A relaxing place to unwind and step away from Tokyo bustle.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love that ryokan and it is six time that we stayed there. Perfect location, hot springs are good and staff is excellent.

10.0 Excellent

Cons: NothingG
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff was excellent, nice view and was price is fair.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We loved the dinner and breakfast, mainly Japanese mixed with a little western taste. The food was fresh especially the fish. The quality of the food was outstanding and the quantity was sufficient. The onsen, both indoor and outdoor, was excellent. The staff were great. They were friendly, cheerful and informative, and we appreciated their hospitality. Our room was facing the ocean. We arrived at 17:30 and missed the sunset view but were compensated with a stunning sunrise view. We had a morning stroll along the concrete path right below the hotel and the view was magnificent. Highly recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is perfect. We had a cozy vacation at here.
7.5 Good
Pros: They prepare really good breakfast and dinner. It was fantastic and the view from the room was amazing.
Cons: The building is old so the structure of the room was not practical.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Despite being an area with many fewer English speakers than in areas like Kyoto and Tokyo, the staff did their utmost to make sure we had every bit of information we needed. All of the staff, whether reception, cleaning staff, or anyone in between, were amazingly polite and courteous. The room was large and the futons were extremely comfy (and neither of us had a particularly comfortable experience with futons in the ryokan from our last trip). The public baths were super spacious, and the outdoor baths in particular were amazing on a cold winter night. The amenities in the women's side of the dressing room area were extensive, with all manner of skin and hair products to choose from. In general the room and bathroom were clean and beautifully presented. Wifi in the room was strong and fast.
Cons: Not a "negative" exactly, as we were handed a few sheets of paper with some basic information about the hotel when we checked in, but having an English version of the information in the big book in the room would be helpful next time.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent sights and hot springs Breakfast is also very good
Cons: Nothing

Pros: The room in the hotel is amazing! Very comfortable and the view out of window is splendid! There are three Onsen places inside of the hotel and everything is well organized. Not very far to the outdoor onsen. And the staff in Hokkawa hotel are very very friendly and nice. They answered my questions very patiently. And when I said I want to withdraw some money from ATM there is a Mister from reception drove me there! (But please note that the Lawson has the ATM doesn’t accept foreign card but the cashier does.) 10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice spacious rooms, beautiful ocean views, and reasonable price point.
Cons: Wifi not in the rooms
7.1 Good
Pros: Good sea view, grand dinner and breakfast
Cons: Sofa was not so clean. There was a pin in main room. All other pins were not having glass in middle. But this pin only has a glass like glittering. Worried whether spy pin camera or just a pin.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: The view
Cons: Quality of food. Willingness of the personnel to help their customers.
7.1 Good
Pros: The location was nice, a walking distance from the train station and in front of the sea. The staff was courteous and helpful and the room was comfortable, clean and quite big. The hotel has a nice pool and onsen bath too. It is also convenient because it has one of the only 3 convenience stores of the village (another is in the station and the other one only accessible by car). Finally, the hotel offers a plan with two meals, which provides a good value for the money (they serve a buffet with a lot of variety; the taste was ok). After being there, we found out that the meal plan was also a very good option because almost everything nearby closes early, and there is only a few options to eat at night. Finally, 2 tips to those going to Atagawa-Onsen. For those going by train: we could not find any market and the 2 convenience stores we could reach walking were closed by 5 pm, so if you need anything make sure to check the stores early. Regarding the beach, there is an area of it that is safe to swin and another one (more in the middle of it) in which the sea floor is full of rocks. Ask the life guards where is the safest area to swin and you should be fine (or you can do as many Japanese we saw there doing and enter the sea dressed, with protection garments, or with floaters).
Cons: Things that you should be aware if you are considering this property: 1- Wifi only in the lobby; 2- Cash only, which is quite unusual for a hotel in this age. I was left wondering how people traveling in a large group, staying for a week or so do; do they carry bags full of money to pay for the stay? (to be fair though, apparently other hotels in the area have the same policy). I also did not like that I was not allowed to pay in advance. The reason I was given is that the hotel can only issue a receipt at check-out (??). 3- The hotel is not new and clearly its facilities are not very well kept, they definitely need more care (still, the room we stayed was ok). 4- As other reviewers commented, the hotel has a tight schedule regarding meal and check-out times. The dinning room is too small for all guests to eat at once. Thus, they divide the guests in groups and set fixed times for them to eat. For dinner you have 70 minutes (which is manageable) but for breakfast you only have 45 minutes (and the 1st group starts at 7 am), which is quite short. If you are late, you will probably not have time to eat properly because there will be another group waiting to enter in the room, and they will ask you to leave when your time is up. Regarding check-out time, it is 9:30 am, quite early too. Honestly, it was a little bit difficult to relax with this tight schedule. But, if you manage your expectations and consider the value for money, it is a reasonable place to stay a couple of nights.
