Overview Reviews
Traveling can be stressful and when tourists come to the Palo Alto area, they are just looking for a little Zen for themselves. This is why the Zen Hotel is a great place for travelers. The name says it all! This hotel is peaceful and eco-friendly. In the Palo Alto area, it has become one of the most popular stays for travelers. It has 37 rooms, a free hot breakfast, fitness center, complementary welcome snacks, business center, free parking, laundry, and is located near Stanford University. The rooms here are extremely comfortable and guests of the Zen Hotel will truly feel like they have found the most relaxing place in the world. The rooms feature climate control, flat screen television, mini fridge, Starbucks coffee, bottled water, work desk, plush mattress, and microwave. The mood here is calm and the rooms will help the guests of the hotel to enjoy their stay and get the stresses of life off of their minds. With Stanford University being right around the corner, guests will find so many attractions, eateries, and shopping areas nearby. It is easy to find something to do here, but it is also very easy to just relax while guests are here. Guests who want to venture out can check out Broines Park, Monroe Mini-Park, Immersion Spa, CineArts at Palo Alto Square, and Sarah Wallis Park. Booking is simple, but because this is such a small hotel, rooms may sell out so it is imperative to book early.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Was lacking Buddha head and temple, which would have really made it a "zen" location, but its karma sufficed. Had a peaceful aura about the property. Sorry we missed breakfast, but had to leave before 7 a.m.
Cons: Did't like that it didn't live up to it's name. The Zen Hotel should have a true "Zen" garden.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I chose to stay here for a night before starting at Stanford University. The location is excellent - just a 12-minute drive to the campus, and a short drive to the nearby Walmart. Amenities are great with L'occitane products, and the room came with USB ports installed with the sockets which were so convenient to use. Hotel also has a generous selection of complimentary snacks and beverages in the room, and a coffee machine furnished with Starbucks filter coffees. Breakfast service was comprehensive with a personal touch - including splendid fresh smoothies and an adorable pancake machine. There were also handmade cookies available from 1pm which you can get at reception.

Cons: Sound of the train passing by.
6.8 Good
Pros: I have stayed at this Hotel in the past and everything was excellent. Clean room. Comfortable bedding and beautiful property.
Cons: Our air conditioner's chill water valve was slamming shut. Which sounded like a door slamming all night long. We reported the problem, only to come back to our room to find the temperature at 95 degrees and the problem not fixed. We had specifically stated the problem was with the air conditioner, not the heater. The bathroom was dirty. Found long black hair all over the bath tub, I have short blonde hair, plus we had not used it. The bed was awful, most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on. The saddest part of all was we said the stay was bad, on check out no body seemed to care

Pros: I attended a function nearby. The location was great. After the unsettling events in the room next door, the front desk attendant was very kind at 1:30 in the morning/offered another room, but I couldn't sleep after the disturbing things I had heard .
Cons: Dropped off my bags at 7 PM/went to my event. When I returned at midnight, there was a violent drug/alcohol fueled argument in the room next door. I hoped it would end and tried to sleep. After 1 1/2 hours I gave up/ decided to drive the 1 hour home.

Pros: Was an excellent experience. Its a Motel after all, not a cruise ship. For a Motel it was excellent, 5 stars all the way staff was great and its in a really good location. Did not break the bank which is what was really nice.

Pros: It had everything we needed plus lip balm! It had a lovely garden view and walkout space.
Cons: The only thing I disliked was the odor of something used as a freshener. It felt unhealthy for us to be breathing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is a bit far from the center and there are not many things to do around, but the shuttle service, makes your life much much easier. The room was very clean, having a tablet with all the necessary information, a TV, an iron, hairdryer, locker, microwave and coffee machine. Anything you need during a business trip. The swimming pool is small but clean. There is a big desk, which is very good if you need to work.
Cons: For the facilities you get, it is a bit overpriced. All personnel was very nice and helpful, except of one lady who was always grumpy and she would not listen to you( as a result she just did not write down the information about my shuttle). There could be a bit more lighting in the room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything.
Cons: The coffee pot in the room!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location near Stanford. Really nice, clean room. Liked the refrigerator and coffee, and convenient plug-ins. Air conditioning worked great. Parking was super convenient.
Cons: The creek was dried up. It wasn't clear where the elevator was. Recommend a sign at building 6 to indicate the elevator entrance is not in the parking area, but rather inside the fenced area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was extra helpful with retrieving our lost luggage from the airport! Thank you again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and fresh room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I did not know that breakfast was available or included, I had an early departure. As a woman traveling alone, I felt comfortable with the location of the property and the room.
Cons: I can't think of anything, I wish that I had arrived earlier in order to go swimming... :-) That was on me though, not the fault of the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There is not restaurant in the hotel, but small store that sells sandwiches and snacks, unfortunately is closed on Sundays, so I went out to get a breakfast, and there are plenty of options available around the hotel, which is well located
Cons: I'm fine with all the service and price
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Quiet location, set back off of El Camino Real. Room and area was very quiet situated creekside with a small patio. The front desk staff was VERY FRIENDLY, free shuttle within 5 mile radius (in a brand new Tesla) ... onsite deli with a good selection of items and restaurant. We only stayed one night, but would definitely stay here again.
Cons: Only small issue was at night air conditioner was a bit loud when on, otherwise no problems at all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really cute property! Clean, updated, rooms. Nice, relaxing, pool area. Lots of beautiful trees, flowers, and greenery. There was a very convenient market/deli on site that served sandwiches and salads and had an espresso bar.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The bed was like a laying on a melty marshmellow! Best night sleep my husband and I have had in a long time! It was quiet and relaxing during our stay there and the maids were prompt and and very good at what they do! The front desk clerks who helped us check in and out were beyond nice and comforting! I would definitely be staying again next time I plan a trip in the area!!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice setting.
Cons: No information on breakfast. Thought continental breakfast was included. Door to outside funky--not working correctly.

Pros: It was very comfortable and the price was perfect. Staff was friendly and made you feel safe,
5.5 Okay
Cons: My original room on the second floor was changed to room 10 on the first floor which was a 12x12 threadbare carpeted, room with shower only. This I was charged $203. I was very short on time so I was not able to complain to anyone in charge. If you make a reservation and they change your room you must take time to inspect the room. I felt I was cheated .
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very friendly. Large, comfortable room, and a very pleasant outdoor pool area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect for what we wanted; spending a couple of days looking around Silicon Valley and visiting Stanford University. Not really walking distance but a quick ride away. The room was delightful and super comfortable. Honestly thought it was better than some of the more expensive hotels we have stayed in. The staff were lovely and very accommodating.

Pros: Cute little place. Immaculately clean. Very well kept. Nostalgic charm.
Cons: No typical amenities like a gym, bar, or breakfast room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was very clean with plenty of fresh towels, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. The office staff was extremely helpful and accepted a drop off item for me and deliver it to the room without me having to call them. Wake up call was on time. A nice continental Breakfast with juice and coffee was delivered to the room. The pool was outside our room and all the plants were manicured, the lemon trees were beautiful and water is available for the pool area all day.
Cons: There was nothing not to like.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lots of flowers. Pool area is relaxing. Location is convenient. Breakfast is a nice benefit as well.
8.8 Excellent

5.5 Okay
Pros: Terrible value for money. $900 plus for the junior suite which was fairly small; had a box room for the suite bit; no bath (this is a suite!); almost nothing to eat after 11pm; the shower had so so water pressure and needed a clean; was very noisy around 11 and woken at 6.00 by street cleaning.
Cons: I booked for 3 nights and left after 1. It is OK but for $900 you expect something very good and this is not very good.
8.8 Excellent
Cons: We booked for a family of five and expected a pullout bed or roller away, this wasn't the case. We need to book another room to accommodate our family.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Sweet Amenities cool modern vibe
Cons: Little bit of poor communication but it was fixed.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: nice location and delicious food
Cons: none
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location, stylish hotel with well-appointed comfortable rooms. Staff were helpful and they have an SMS Concierge who texts you right after check-in and was prompt to reply to questions and requests.
Cons: No tea or hot water in rooms. If you are a coffee drinker you will have a great machine with everything you need. If like me you drink tea you will have to ask. They kindly and quickly provided electric kettle and teabags and 3 mugs. The next day the cleaning staff removed the mugs and when I asked for them back and some additional tea bags, room service arrived with the items and a bill for $34+!! I was not happy with that.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great staff, great location, best restaurant in the world, great view from the 7th floor... i hope to be back in one of the other locations. Room was awesome, i like the separate bathroom and the kitchen counter, the wardrobe...
Cons: Cold lift, why and how?
7.0 Good
Pros: Will be a fantastic hotel....once is finished.
Cons: Noisy. You can hear the street and the works happening in the hotel.
4.5 Okay
Pros: Room was recently refinished so eveything was new
Cons: The room was incredibly noisy. I was facing Hamilton Ave on the 3rd floor of the hotel. It was so loud in my room I could hear conversations happening in normal voice on the street. At 4:00 am noise from the street cleaners started followed by an hour of garbage trucks beeping and clanging. No exaggeration - I might as well have been in the truck with them. If you want a good nights sleep this is not the hotel for you. They have installed the most expensive, exotic toilet money can buy, but couldn't care less about any soundproofing in the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Interesting design
Cons: N/A
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff were helpful and I enjoyed the personalized butler service. The text questions (Butler sms service) were responded very promptly each time.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The Peninsula Creamery is across the street and The Old Pro is a 1 minute walk away. You couldn't be more central to downtown PA.
Cons: 1 elevator, but its large because this used to be an old age condo building so they needed to cart the sick and the dead out in stretchers.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was super friendly and helped us a number of times with ice, a corkscrew, and whatever else we needed. The bathroom was very nice for a motel and had excellent toiletries. It was also a very large room.
Cons: It is a motel with all of the drawbacks of that, loud doors, footsteps overhead, noise from outside the room. The air conditioning unit was also unable to keep the room very cool, but it was a super hot day.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Rooms are always clean and close to cafe's.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Plenty to like. Close to restaurants, easy parking, spacious bathroom, air conditioner, windows that open, kitchenette, chocolates
Cons: The decore was a bit bland in the main room. Little touches would bring the esthetic up and make the price seem more reasonable. If traveling for work or just want a convenience and clean place to hang your hat, it works well.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location if you have someone staying at Stanford hospital/school. Its about 10 minute drive. Walking distance to California Ave where there are lots of restaurants. Pretty affordable. Traveled with a toddler; wish they had a child latch on door. All rooms have mini fridge, microwave, Keurig which is nice and convenient for long stays. Stayed on 2nd floor wish windows had bug screen/mesh. Keep windows closed. Tons of mosquitos will come in. Shawn at front desk was super friendly.
Cons: No child latch on doors. No window mesh/screen for bugs.

Pros: The room was large enough for the 4 of us to be comfortable. Very clean and the area it was in was so cute. We really enjoyed ourselves and would recommend it to anyone.
Cons: There was nothing negative to say about our stay. The place and Sean at the front desk were absolutely awesome.

Cons: No screens on windows Cheap a/c that blows right onto the couch Busy street
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean and good staff. The market is very close from the hotel for eat or shopping. That’s convenience.

Pros: The location was awesome. It was right in downtown Palo Alto and not a bad walk to Stanford (where I was attending a conference).
Cons: The room was definitely on the smaller side, and not having a bath in suite was not ideal, but was really not a big deal. I do wish they had a work out facility on site. I was up early, and it would have been nice to have a treadmill to run on while da

Pros: Privacy policy was perfect! Location is the big plus for me as I take public transit to get here and around! Room was clean, very comfortable, sound and light proof! lots of restaurants, cafes, beauty salons right nearby. Post Office is only a 5-min walk away!
Cons: Shared toilet nearest my room was inaccessible on day 3 due to failed lock mechanics, possibly. Small inconvenience, however, there were 3 alternative bathroom sites. This is possibly not the best hotel for the incontinent elderly.

7.5 Good
Pros: Location. Cleanliness
Cons: There was no bathroom in the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: great location!
5.8 Okay
Pros: Location is convenient
Cons: Window cleaning right across the street woke us up at 6:00 AM on saturday morning- extremely bad noise of a generator or water pressure machine for hours. Hotel management should have prevented this to happen. You walk outside for the breakfast to go to a restaurant next building.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Such a historic and charming location and property, very welcoming! It "oozed" nostalgia. The rooms were updated and very clean. Great location, close to everything. Comfortable and quiet. -Loved the Cafe Maxine breakfast. The coffee was outstanding!
Cons: No air-conditioning. There were Dyson fans in hallways and in the room. The ceiling fan did an ample job, along with the Dyson, of keeping the room comfortable*. The carpet in stairwells and hallways had a bit too be desired (worse for the wear).... but the staff and charm had us easily over-looking that shortcoming. *NOTE: we were visiting in July and it was a bit warm during the day, thus it was a bit stuffy at night. (But as a "hot sleeper" this may not apply to everyone).

Pros: We had a great time here! Vacation travel, wanted to be central in Menlo Park - location was good for that and even though it's on a busy street it was quiet with a nice environment inside the hotel. For a relatively simple property that was very competitive on pricing the hotel offered some really nice amenities - pool table, space to hang out in lobby area whenever you like, fire pit in the back and a great hot tub! Rooms are very clean and modern. But the best thing about Hotel Lucent is the staff. Everyone was super nice and helpful - in fact they helped us organize a small gathering of friends at the hotel! Special shout out to Yvonne, who went out of her way to make us comfortable and was a big part of this stay being a great experience. Thank you Yvonne!

Pros: The room was clean and very comfortable. The staff ere friendly and accommodating-positive interactions with each and every one.
Cons: I didn’t like that the pool bar was closed, and that the pool area was not kept up. All trash cans were overfilled with trash piling up around trash cans. There was even smashed caked next to the hot tub which scared most visitors off. The cabana we used had food plates left all over the place and so I moved it to the nearest garbage can which was too full, so I put the plates on top. I noticed the towels are not restocked. When we first entered, somebody was there blasting their own music- it felt like that group took over the pool-we didn’t swim. The whole point of staying at this location was the pool and pool bar, so this is why we’re very disappointed. It would be better if: The pool area garbage was routinely kept after: garbage cans emptied, towels replaced, area swept. The hotel played fun upbeat music for all to enjoy -instead of allowing personal speakers. They seemed understaffed at the time we stayed, but I still wouldn’t stay here again and risk having the same experience.

Pros: The shuttle driver "Steve" welcomed us, showed us Palo Alto, drove us downtown and recommended places to eat. He has a wealth of knowledge of Palo Alto and my son and I appreciated his hospitality, willingness to share historic aspects of the city, friendly. We appreciated "Steve" and also your reception staff. Plus also the valet person out front was always friendly and welcomed us! I would highly recommend your hotel. Your staff is excellent!!!!

Pros: Location.
Cons: I couldn't get wifi in my room, only if I was in the main building so they did move to the main building cause I had to work and needed wifi.

Pros: Breakfast was really the worst thing about the hotel!!! Coffee was really bitter and the fresh pot they made wasn’t better. Please change the brand of coffee. As well the sausage wasn't identified as turkey till we asked. But the coffee is a real non negotiable point...
Cons: Coffee

Pros: Love the lobby and grounds in general. Staff was nice.
Cons: $18 for breakfast is kinda expensive. Place felt like a motel with a separate new fancy building for the lobby. Felt like two different hotels/motels. For the price of the room I wasn’t too happy.
