Like in the United States, in Moldova, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. At crossroads and junctions, traffic on the right normally has priority. If you are about to make a left turn at an intersection, you must yield to approaching traffic. Even if no warning signal is received, all drivers and vehicles must prioritize emergency vehicles with blue flashing lights. When departing intersections, buses and school buses take precedence. Vehicles must also yield when a bus indicates its intention to proceed.
In Moldova, you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car, although drivers of this age will have limited vehicle choices and will incur a young driver fee added to the agreement. Even for agencies that rent to anyone over the age of 21, there are typically restrictions on the type and brand of car you can rent.
Typically, a gallon of gas in Moldova is going to cost you around 100 MDL (5.35 USD), while a liter will only come to about 27 MDL (1.40 USD). You’ll come across plenty of gas stations if you’re in the major cities of Chisinau, Balti, and Tiraspol, but they are much harder to come by in the rural areas of the country, as you might expect, so make sure you fill up if you decide to venture out to the vast countryside.
As with any country on the European continent, speed limits can vary from region to region, and Moldova is no different. When driving around urban areas, note that you cannot exceed 50 km/h (31 mph), and if you end up entering residential areas, you must reduce your speed to 20 km/h (12 mph). Out on the open roads between cities, the maximum speed limit can vary depending on the road you are driving, but it can range between 80 km/h (50 mph) and 110 km/h (68 mph). Due to this, be extra careful to pay attention to the signs as limits can change regularly.
