The Merchant - Salem - Building
1
9.6 Excellent (203 reviews)
C$ 305+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at The Merchant in Salem, you'll be a 4-minute walk from Witch House and 8 minutes by foot from Salem Witch Museum. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved the uniqueness of the hotel - especially how every room was different. It was well stocked and had free beverages too! The location worked really well as everything we wanted to do in Salem was within walking distance. We met and chatted with other travelers in the lobby/bar area which was cozy and inviting. As we were coming back to the hotel at night, we noticed people on a Ghost Tout taking pictures of it. That was when we learned about its history in Salem. That's a bonus in our book!
Cons: Nothing I can think of at this time.
6.3 Good
Pros: Breakfast, Location
Cons: Room not as advertised. Uo 4 flights of steep stairs (No mention of this on booking). No windows, no fire escape or other access. Very unsatisfactory room. Far too expensive for a room of this type in that location.,
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast...did not take advantage of. We slept too late. Amazing staff!
Cons: In room #9 the air conditioning unit is right over one side of the bed. It didn't bother me, but my husband was bummed out by it.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, thoughtfully decorated hotel in a convenient location in downtown Salem. We especially liked the tea/coffee and snack stations located on the 1st and 3rd floors. Easy and comfortable stay all around.
Cons: The shower could use a thorough cleaning (the grout was stained in places) but this was a minor issue. If you're an earlier riser, be advised that breakfast isn't really available before 8am.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice service, spotlessly clean, smells lovely! the little kitchen has snacks, tea etc and is clean and spotless. Very central, very comfy beds. Great place to stay. Very boutique and very chique. the Girl who welcomed me was very helpful and informative. I would go again if I return to Salem.
Cons: It was all great - only tiny issue was that I didn't know how to switch off the air con, and wasn't sure how to get drinks at the bar - maybe a few instructions would be handy for that, plus I could not work the code for the door ... but it was solved by going around the back.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was imaginative. Air conditioning excellent. Staff helpful. Location very central to shopping district, main drag, sidewalk cafes and drinking establishments.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: So clean and fresh.
Cons: Didn’t know it’s reputed to be haunted :(
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing design, location, comfort- incredible hospitality and breakfast
Cons: Drop off of luggage was easy but required moving the car. Nothing we disliked.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The little extras, coffee, tea ,water, always available and the lite but interesting breakfast.
Cons: Drain problems with the bathroom sink that just couldn’t be completely solved

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great restaurants and view. Great location Staff excellent
10.0 Excellent
Cons: I did not like daily having no towels and washcloths, everyday I had to call and then tip someone. I also thought it was ridiculous to call for a Diet Coke, I tried to purchase one downstairs, they would not sale it to me. After calling room service they came up with 2- 6 ounce bottles, no ice, then they had to get me ice because I could not get it by myself. Total for 2-6 ounce Diet Coke $20.00, then a tip, total $25.00. Ridiculous!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location, great breakfast, very comfortable bed & pillows!! Friendly staff- Really enjoyed the complimentary glass of wine each evening.
Cons: Had to wait 90 minutes after checkin time (3 pm) before our room was cleaned and ready. Had requested early checkin prior to arrival as we arrived at 1:30. We had been up since 3am and were ready to relax in our room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s beautiful and unique. The staff is very friendly and the breakfast was amazing. It was nice and quiet too! We will definitely be back!
Cons: We truly liked everything!
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Didn’t like check in at all. The receptionist is terrible. She was rude and she made my check in quite uncomfortable. She didn’t want to take my cash. She told me my room wasn’t ready when it was. She asked me what didn’t I understand when I challenged my early approval of check in. I did not find her professional
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location next to theKendall T, MIT and easy access to downtown Boston.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was terrific. Basic self serve, but great quality and quantities. The staff was excellent, very friendly and helpful. The location is perfect. You're just feet away from the subway.
Cons: I was disappointed that the bar does not stock non-alcoholic beer. There are many very good ones available, in particular the European non-alcoholic beers like Heineken 00, Buckler, and St. Pauli. The domestic ones are generally terrible.

Cons: Nothing!
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location right in between Harvard Uni and MIT. Easy access from airport and to Boston city centre.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The history of the house is wonderful and our hosts were so nice! My hubby is visually impaired so they put us in the room with the room with the best lighting. Bed was super comfortable too.
Cons: We are early risers so 8:30 breakfast time is a bit late for us. No worries though! Just around the block is a coffee house that opens at 7 to tide us over. : )

Cons: Room was a little small but comfortable.

Pros: Hosts were attentive but left us to our own devices but they were there if we needed them! Very knowledgable about the area and the hotel is right next door to the Salem Witch Museum
Cons: Perhaps a little more choice at breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were very poor at planning our travel time and arrival, but the owner, Matt, was so very gracious and accommodating! I felt terrible for the inconvenience we caused. The house is so close to the Witch Museum we could've touched their wall from our window (at least with a broom!). We didn't even get into our car the whole stay, everything was in walking distance - perfect location. The hosts are so kind, breakfast was simple but top notched - highly recommend this hotel!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It was very homey and the location was perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A full six months before we travelled, Matt made us feel welcome, to the point that it felt like meeting a long lost friend when we arrived. From that point on: his welcome, advice on where to eat and drink, fresh pastries and coffee at breakfast, and the location of the Inn made for an exceptional visit. I do hope that we will return at some point in the not too distant future.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely excellent location. Matt, Kelly and Bobi were very professional, friendly and most importantly sincere
Cons: Nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good clam chowder
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The best thing about this hotel is the no tipping policy. I have lived abroad for over 25 years and get so confused on what to tip and hate fumbling around for dollars. In addition, the reception staff were exceptional. Very friendly and helpful. I very much enjoyed the buffet breakfast. I had the pool to myself and the staff there were also really helpful. Great touch to have a dark make-up towel in the bathroom as I always feel guilty when I make a white facecloth messy with my mascara. I will defiantly be back. Thank you.
Cons: No complaints

Pros: The room or facility was not worth 400 a night. I have stayed in hotels in the $250-300 range and they were much nicer. Beds terrible along with the pillows. The room was just ok.

6.0 Good
Pros: The location was good and it was decorated very retro and on trend. Not a typical hotel chain where everything looks the same. I also liked that they had complimentary coffee and water in the lobby and the room.
Cons: The fan was broken in the room and I mentioned it to two people at the front desk. Both said that they would send someone up with a replacement. That did not happen. Front desk associates were chatting with the valet or using a personal cell.

6.0 Good
Pros: the way the hotel had a theme of music and was different to normal
Cons: When we got there, there was another charge of $16.00 to use the pool and bar which we were not told about previously. Also we used the pool but there was nowhere to get drinks until 5pm, would have been good to have somewhere to get drinks.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The music theme was awesome and well pulled off! The hotel was funky and fun, the staff were warm and friendly, the ambiance was relaxed and cool.
Cons: Wish the pool area stayed open at night, not necessarily for swimming, but for sitting outside and chilling.

3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The staff was friendly. Everything else was lousy. We ended up staying at a different hotel even though we prepaid for this one.
Cons: The hotel was rather old. Our first room smelled very musty. They kindly relocated us to another room, which was less musty smelling. Another couple was also relocating for the same reason at the same time. The pink taxi was not available bc no driv
7.7 Good
Pros: The location was he best part of this hotel. Everything downtown was a short, safe walk (T stops, Fanuel Hall, Quincy Market). The room was small for the price but it was well kept. Everything was clean and staff was quick to respond to any requests we had.
Cons: Our AC/Heater broke on our last day there so we had to move rooms because it could not be fixed that night. It kept making an awful buzzing noise every few seconds and would have made sleeping impossible. It was about 8:30 at night and it was really the last thing we wanted to do. Fortunately, they had another room available, and they told us it was an upgrade (it wasn’t), but it was still a process to have to pack all of our stuff up and move it. Pros: The quality of service at the Langham is exceptional. I've never stayed in a hotel where the staff were universally excellent, the accommodations so truly comfortable, and so many lovely extras included. I stayed following an historic blizzard in Boston, and being in that space, so warmly greeted, every need considered -- I can't say enough about how wonderful this establishment is. I would stay again, every time I'm in Boston!
Cons: Nothing.

Pros: Clean, quiet, and relatively posh with ample room size. Luxury, but not high end luxury...hotel has good bones, but is older. Still a nice place to stay
Cons: Modern amenities in rooms for technology not really available...no charging ports, limited plugs even near the desk. Also the restaurant was not open at 8:00 pm on a Tuesday, just the bar with a more limited menu.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: We loved the beauty of the building. The room was simple but elegant. But the thing that we loved most was the location, location, location! You literally step out the main entrance, cross the street, and you’re on Essex Street! Easy access to food, shopping, and tours. You literally can walk anywhere you’d like to go, which is perfect, especially for a night out. Would definitely recommend.
Cons: N/A!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location, wonderful service
Cons: Beds were way to small for two people!
4.8 Okay
Pros: Right next to all the tourist attractions.
Cons: Extremely pricey (200$/night) for a very poor quality, old hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This Hotel was wonderful! Check in was easy and the staff was friendly. Everything was very clean even the Brass was clean and shiny and there is a lot of brass! The Hotel was quite, and very certainly located. It was with in walking distance to every attraction and great food and shopping choices. They have amazingly smooth coffee! I really loved the whole stay. If you are a person that like large rooms this is not the hotel for you. The Queen room we stayed in was exactly the size of a bedroom with a bathroom. There was a full size closet. The bathroom was perfect I loved the deep sink and bathtub. There was great water pressure for a shower. We only had dessert ( Boston Pie) and coffee at the Restaurant and it was fantastic.
Cons: There is not place to pull up to unload your baggage without stopping traffic and the parking lot is pretty far from the front and side entrances. There were no caddie’s to put our baggage on so it took 2 trips for us to get all of our items to our room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location! Comfortable room and beds! Close to shopping, restaurants and bars, museums and the water. You can walk to everything.
Cons: Couldn't open windows in the room, but that may be an age factor of the building.

With a stay at The Charles Hotel, you'll be centrally located in Cambridge, a 5-minute walk from Harvard University and a 5-minute drive from Fenway Park. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, a 24-hour business center, and limo/town car service. Planning an event in Cambridge? 8.8 Excellent
Pros: Hotel vibe and decoration
Cons: Unpersonal chck-out process
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Quiet, clean. Good location. Nice restaurants. Great gym.
Cons: Beds were very soft—hard to sleep. Staff was not exactly consumer-friendly. They were “officially” pleasant but not helpful. Eg. I was initially told that I could extend my stay in the same room as it wasn’t booked. After I booked a room online (at their request) I was told I’d have to pay $50 more to extend my stay in the same room even though it was going to be empty. (Our room had two beds vs one king). So we would have had to pack everything up and move for one night—why? They called back and agreed to let us stay in the room we had but it made for a frustrating experience. Why charge more for same room with different numbers of beds if they are all empty?
7.1 Good
Pros: The location
Cons: To have separate space for the event attendees.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice comfortable hotel with good location near Harverd square.
Cons: little bit old Hotel with some noises at night from the equipment inside the Hotel.. but nothing major.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great restaurants in Hotel.
Cons: Pricey.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the location being so close to Harvard. The room was great and fell a notch above what I was expecting.
Cons: The pool was not part of the hotel but connected and therefore had weird restrictions on kids using the pool.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bedding (down comforter, great pillows), and the air quality/climate control were outstanding. The room was spacious and beautifully appointed, and the bed was actually more comfortable than my bed and home (and I'm fussy). The pool was excellent.
Cons: No coffee maker in the room. Refrigerator packed with overpriced bar stuff. I was annoyed, but the NY Times outside the door in the morning put the smile back on my face.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location is good, close to the red line, 10 min with underground to Boston city center. Breakfast was good but it was not not included into the room rate, free coffee is provided in the restaurant for the guests, but we were not informed about this.
Cons: The personnel on the reception and portier could be a bit more friendly and helpful.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location! Location! Location! And the view.
Cons: Expensive sleepy breakfast arrangement. No in-room coffee maker, and a "hidden" free coffee area.
7.9 Good
Pros: The rooms were great.
Cons: The pool wasn’t good at all. Very limited hours. It was really a pool for the gym. A bit misleading.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bed! The TV in toilet!
Cons: No
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location! Comfy beds
Cons: I missed a refrigerator in the room I could use, and coffee-making facilities

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Loved having hot breakfast available everyday. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, and everybody on the staff was very friendly.
6.3 Good
Cons: Poor communication. Zero response to reservation issues. Front desk staff would only answer in corporate robo-speak
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location great, interior style very well done.
Cons: Just a few small things: interior court yard/atrium is an echo chamber so any small noice from the open elevator shaft (elevators make a small clicking sound when they are engaged which normally would never be noticed) but because the shaft is open to the central atrium which is covered in tile the small sounds echo through the entire hotel. If someone is having a conversation in the central atrium the entire hotel is privy to it. The walls are also thin so you seem to know exactly what is going on in the rooms around you. The building was built as a factory not a habitation so it looks really cool but other livable factors like quietness and warmth it lacks. My room was facing the alley where the trash is collected (I was there four nights) every morning at 0300 the garbage truck would back all the way down the alley with its reverse alarm beeping up a storm and then it sounded like a terrorist attack was taking place for a good 20 minutes while every dumpster was thrashed about and emptied into the truck. The front desk staff are typical Boston; coming from Japan where customer service and politeness is excessive, the more austere "here's your room key... what... you need directions on whea to paak, yaaah ovea thea" followed by blank stares... was jarring at first but its authentic and makes for good story telling. The breakfast is wonderful and the staff tending to breakfast things were very warm and pleasant.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Having a kitchen and having the room divided into sort of 2 rooms. The new/modern decor with old renovated building.
