Top tips for renting a car at San Juan Airport

  • When getting your car rental at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin Intl Airport (SJU), inspect your rental car before hopping in and driving off. It would be best if you kept an eye on any indicator of both interior and exterior damage. Check out for stains, rips, markings on the interior, and scratches, and dents on the exterior. Although the damages ought to have been already recorded by the rental agency, it would be helpful to be sure. If you don't, you risk being charged for damages that already existed when picking up the rental car.
  • If the insurance offered by the car rental at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin Intl Airport doesn't appeal to you, you can always opt for your credit card to cover any damages. Most major credit cards offer rental car insurance cover at no extra fee. However, you may need to double-check with your credit card provider for any restrictions on coverage. If your credit card provides a limited cover, consider getting temporary car insurance for additional coverage.
  • If you are operating on a budget, you can save some money by carrying your own driving extras. It's the small things that matter, and renting a car at San Juan Intl Airport is no exception. Packing your extras such as a child seat, GPS, or a radio will save you the additional daily cost you could pay if you had gotten them from the rental facility. Ensure the car rental agencies removes their extras from the car to avoid being charged. Nonetheless, San Juan Intl Airport offers a wide range of cheap car rental choices, guaranteeing that you don't have to break the bank when renting.
  • Returning your car rental to San Juan Intl Airport shouldn't be a daunting task. All you need is to follow the airport signage to the designated parking area for car rental agencies. However, before returning the automobile, most SJU rental agencies require you to fill up the gas tank. To save up some money, fill your gas tank at a fueling station near the airport since letting the car rental fill the difference will cost you more. You can also drop off the rental car in a different location, but a surcharge will apply.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars at San Juan Airport for C$ 43 or less
  • Book your rental car at San Juan Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at San Juan Airport

  • Is renting a car at San Juan Intl Airport worth it?

Despite having AMA Buses serving SJU airport, getting a car rental from the airport is a handy option for exploring the island. Getting a car when visiting Puerto Rico provides you with a great advantage. Since the island is relatively small, you can easily see nearly all of it in a small space of time. It would be a pity to visit San Juan and only stay in the city due to the limited inter-town public transportation. Moreover, an SJU car rental will save you the inconvenience of struggling with heavy luggage and the delays of public transportation.

  • Can I register an extra driver for my San Juan Luis Munoz Marin Intl Airport car rental?

Yes, you can. Based on your car rental provider at SJU, you can add a driver to your car rental when booking a reservation online or picking it up at the airport. Most car rental agencies at SJU charge an additional cost for additional drivers per day. However, your spouse may be considered an authorized driver; therefore, surcharges won't apply. Nevertheless, all additional drivers must meet the same requirements as the renter.

  • What documents do I need for a car rental at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin Intl Airport?

To get a rental car at SJU, you will need to present a valid driver's license issued by the government. If you are a foreign renter, a valid driver's license from your country of origin that should stay valid for the rental duration is required. If your driver's license is not written in the Latin alphabet, you will need an International Driver's License.

  • How much does it cost to rent a car at San Juan Airport?

On average a rental car at San Juan Airport costs C$ 50 per day.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at San Juan Airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from San Juan Airport to off-airport locations include Hertz, and Europcar.

An hour and 45 minutes from arrival to when the vehicle was available to give I thought Security line was bad at the airport but waiting online outside to just get your vehicle. That was the worst only one person working and when the car was registered and handover the keys. I immediately returned back because the vehicle was not in mid conditions for what I was paying and they have to give me another vehicle which took sometimes and after being an hour and 30 minutes, I decided to go and get something to eat. I arrive at 12:30 PM and I got to the hotel around 4 o’clock. When I came back. I got my car took it and left. The return was very quick then I have to wait that long.

Customer service was poor. they were not rude but they we no helpful. The advertized rate was $11 per day but with their add ons of all the daily fees, it was almost $40 per day. I only kept the car for 2 days. It was to be 2 weeks at 641 total but they charged me $241 for only two days and no one answers the phone there to give me a breakdown.

This was, without a doubt, the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. We arrived expecting to pick up our reserved vehicle, only to be told there were no cars available. We were put on a waiting list and ended up waiting from 1:30 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. at the rental office because there were simply no vehicles. We had no choice but to spend the entire night there. To make matters worse, there was only one employee trying to handle an endless line of frustrated customers. I was number 12 on the waiting list, and people just kept arriving while everyone waited for hours with little information. When we finally received a vehicle, we discovered it had cockroaches inside. After waiting all night, getting into an infested car was completely unacceptable. This company clearly overbooks reservations without having enough vehicles available, leaving customers stranded for hours. A reservation should actually mean a car will be available. The lack of planning, staffing, cleanliness, and customer service made this an incredibly stressful and disappointing experience. I would never rent from this company again and would strongly encourage others to look elsewhere.

Waiting 2 hours to pick up the car, even though had a reservation. One hour in line to get to the desk to show my reservation. Of course they didn’t have the vehicle I rented or similar vehicle. Got something different. Ok, still served our purpose. Went outside to get the car and saw that there was at least 40 people waiting for their car. Not exaggerating, there might have been more. Waited another hour outside in the heat with two small kids and nowhere to sit. The experience was mind boggling. It was an expensive rental and the car was given to us muddy and sandy—-even though I waiting an hour for the car be presumably cleaned to be given to me. Upon return, they said I would receive my receipt via email. I’m still waiting. I have no way of confirming that what I was charged is accurate, it’s more than the estimate. Don’t have much hope in being helped by calling. What a terrible experience.

The lines outside the Pick up window was about 85 people deep and there were only 2 Customer Service agents. Each agent took about 20-25 mins per customer. At that rate, my number would have come the next day. Also, your employees were very rude and unhelpful despite my status. After waiting for 1 hour, we left in frustration and hailed an Uber to our destination. Shameful. I regret ever signing up with you guys. Worst experience. The people in this location do not really seem to care about the customer or their work. Zero motivation, Zero interest. They're doing their jobs only 'coz of a paycheck. These lazy and toxic employees will sink your company because they are the ones controlling your customer service experience. There is a reason Puerto Rico is in such a deep decline.

On pickup the attendant looked like he'd rather be anywhere but there. The car was kinda beat up - little dings and scratches along with some damaged trim. The car was old enough that it didn't have compatibility with Apple Carplay or Android Auto- an exceptionally basic car for what we paid. I understand that it's the peak of vacation season in PR, but this car was not what I had in mind when I rented. Lesson learned.

The first car they gave me broke down in less than 3 hours of driving to my air bnb, it was as if they didn’t even check to make sure the car was in working condition. Sixt gave us a car with an extremely loud engine, something off with transmission. They car had multiple dings which they tried to pass off as from us (but my mom took her own photos at the beginning). They also tried to tack on over $500 in additional coverages that I had already declined and tried to force my family to add them despite having coverage in place, and they added everything wrong and over charged us. Still working on a final resolution and worried about having the authorizations released. They claimed we lost the manual and registration which were in the car as well. I checked before I got out.

The pickup process was terrible and very slow and uninformed. It was not worth the discounted price for the poor service. On my trip the car was parked in front of the Airbnb. When I came out on the last morning there was a scratch on the door. When I returned the car the process was equally slow. I arrived early so I would not miss my flight and I was almost late. I have my own zero deductible travel insurance with $45,000 rental coverage plus I purchased their zero deductible coverage. They charged me $500 deductible anyway saying it was their policy. I said that is not ok but that’s what they did. They said my insurance will reimburse me. I hope they do. I would not recommend this car rental company and I will not use them again.

Pickup was extremely long. It look over an hour to get our car. The process for rental is very slow and frustrating as there were people standing around with luggage everywhere. Also, the mandatory insurance was not appreciated . This was not clear during the reservation on Kayak. The premium is far exaggerated and unfair for international travellers. They are basically charging a half year worth premium for a short term rental . It almost seems illegal The car itself was very nice and clean

I am writing to formally request a full refund for a car rental reservation that was never honored. When we arrived at the rental location, we were informed that we could not rent the vehicle due to pricing discrepancies between the website and the in-person rates. The rental company advised us that because the reservation was made through a third party, we would need to contact them directly for a refund. As a result, we never received or used the vehicle. I contacted Expedia, who stated they needed authorization from Kayak to process the refund. After multiple attempts, Expedia was able to reach Kayak, but the refund request was denied. This is extremely frustrating, as no service was provided and the rental was refused at no fault of our own. Since the vehicle was never released to us and we did not use the rental in any capacity, I am requesting a full refund of the amount charged. I have supporting documentation and confirmation details available upon request. I would appreciate your prompt assistance in resolving this matter. Please let me know the next steps to complete this refund. Thank you for your time and attention.

Worst experience ever! the following issues occurred in order. They require to see proof that my personal car insurance was covered in Puerto Rico and needed to send declaration letter Time taken 45 minutes, was then charged another $100 for tax and use of tolls, car was not ready and was told to wait 30 minutes to clean it. Asked for a car that was already cleans and drove away with a car that lost its brakes on interstates and I almost died. Crawled back to store to get an upgrade and was told that none was available and was given an econo car. Given wrong paperwork on change of car and was told that I needed a different car. At this point I had received four different vehicles and this took over three and a half hours making me totally late for my reservation. What a terrible start to of vacation I will never be running from priceless ever again! To make things even worse I spoke to other customers who had a and in one case worst experience than I had.

Absolutely unacceptable experience – negligent, unprofessional, and completely frustrating. While the desk agent was polite, that’s about the only positive thing I can say. The vehicle I was given was clearly not inspected before being handed off to me. I understand rentals can have quick turnarounds, but basic safety checks like working lights and proper tire pressure are non-negotiable. It was appalling to see another customer being brushed off when they pointed out a broken taillight and were simply told “don’t worry about it.” Seriously? In my own case, I raised concerns about the low tire pressure reading and asked if there was an air machine. Instead of a proper inspection, an employee casually said, “It’s just a bad sensor. Don’t worry about it.” When I insisted on having it checked, he handed me the air hose and told me to fill the tires – then walked away! Unbelievable. Turns out the sensors were fine – the tires actually needed air, which I had to confirm and address myself. On top of that, the lower driver-side cover was literally dragging on the ground while driving. How is this considered road-ready? To make matters worse, the drop-off process is a nightmare. The location has limited hours (8 AM to 6:30 PM), and for after-hours drop-off, you're told to take pictures and email them. Except – their email inbox is full, so your messages bounce back undelivered. Their phone line? Either constantly busy or flat-out ignored – I’ve called over 20 times in the last 22 hours with zero response. And good luck getting help from their parent company, Fox Rent A Car – the reps are clearly reading from scripts and offer no real assistance. Now it’s been over 30 hours since I dropped off the car, and I still haven’t received any confirmation, acknowledgment, or receipt. I have no idea if they even know where the vehicle is, and I’m left worrying about being charged for late return or ongoing parking fees – which, by the way, they force customers to cover for after-hours returns. This is hands down one of the most irresponsible, disorganized rental operations I’ve ever dealt with. If you care about your time, money, and safety – stay far away from this place. They do not deserve your business.

The release for the gas cap was broken and I was not able to pry open the gas cap to put gas in the car. The car was given to me that way. I had to wait a couple of hours for roadside assistance, lost half a day and had to change my plans. Also the car was given to me with the tank half-full but was marked as full on the rental agreement. I returned it full to avoid another hassle. The tow truck driver that came for roadside assistance was great. But they charged me for roadside assistance. That should be included in the cost of the car. Thank you.

There was no line and still took an hour to get the car. The also added a bunch of fees and charges above what I already paid once I got there. Felt ripped off. Never again.

People were nice. Drop off and shuttle was easy. Shuttle at the airport sucked and just ubered instructions were very unclear about going to the orange section. Bait and switched with the price got 150$ online and it ended up being nearly 500$ with taxes, tolls and insurance. Next time I’ll go with a different company. Also started my rental off with a half tank of gas instead of a full tank.

an absolutely horrible experience. i booked the car online, the price significantly changed when a came to pick up the car, it was night time, so I didn’t have any other options, but renting the car on the new conditions. and that isn’t the worst part, because this is something that I agreed for and signed, at least. the worst part followed after the drop off - I passed the car to the staff member, and was talked by him that I’ll get back the deposit in full in a couple of days. instead of $250 deposit return I only received $155. I called the company, they emailed me a new receipt, that doesn’t have my signatures, with a bunch of new charges and fees that I never confirmed. in the middle of filing the claim the agent hang up on me, so I had to call again to finalize the claim. the car was in a very poor condition, with the front fender all bended, making a scary scratching noise on the turns.
