Insurance scamCons:Agent lied and told me my insurance company does not cover any vehicle rented from Payless. I told her I was certain my full coverage policy covered any rental vehicle. I needed to get going, so I signed for the minimum. Later I confirmed my coverage with my insurance agent, and called back to the Payless office to ask for a refund on the insurance. She argued and argued with me, but finally took off the extra insurance charges. If you go to the Payless in Detroit, prepare to get bullied and lied to. Thank goodness I got informed, and pushed back until I got the correction. But it was a battle!Reviewed 27 Nov. 2015

Pros:The Budget car rental staff and policy are the worst I have ever dealt with. Especially Kayak. HOW CAN YOU LET A DRIVER RESERVE A VEHICLE THAT YOU MUST BE 25 TO RESERVE AND THEN CANCEL FOR A FEE. WITH NO AGE VERIFICATION. They should really be called GetlessPros:Supposed priceCons:After a very long slow process in a filthy facility, I was given a very dirty car with dog hair inside that had over 40 k miles. When I told them, they washed the car and brought it back unchanged inside. I went back and told them I wanted a different car as this one also showed 38 on contract, but over 40k in car. They said they had nothing else with papers, so I cancelled the car. I will never rent from payless in Detroit and ended up going to Budget around the corner where I got a clean, low mileage car from a courteous woman at almost the same low price.Reviewed 15 Apr. 2016

The price was ok but car was awful.Pros:The priceCons:Car severely needed an alignment. It was obvious by tires but when you reached 58-65 miles per hour car shook dangerously. I couldn't return to rental agency because I had to get to my appointment. I pretty much drove only as needed and always stayed 30-40 mph. Returning was another nightmare as I had to get on highways to go to airport. I told the gentleman at rental agency and they never offered a partial refund or incentive to rent from them again. He thanked me & threw the keys back in the box. I certainly hope that they do not let another driver experience the dangerous situation I experienced. So glad it wasn't raining. If these are the kinds of cars I'll receive, I'll never rent from them again.Reviewed 26 Jul. 2016

Pros:Nothing. Dumped Payless rental retrieval of rental car to Avis center where the lines were horrendous. Waited for more than an hour long to get a car instead of full size SUV for which I paid for. Most horrible rental car experience!Reviewed 12 Jul. 2020

Pros:Car was dirty, trash in back seat, gas tank 3/4 full. Terrible lines for checking and out, with no system behind counter to speed things up. Check in was terrible. No signs. Staff walked away from us without telling us to go inside to check in. Only one person on staff. No signs for shuttle bus. Zero instructions on catching shuttle. I found and ask a random mechanic who told me where shuttle was, but he was incorrect. Staffing, layout, organization, systems all bad. The false level in gas tank - bad. Decent car, bad customer servicePros:I got a Kia Forte which was clean, updated and had all the necessary things in a rental car.Cons:The guy checking me in didn't properly explain the option refueling with them properly. He said it's just time saver and the price was competitive. When I returned the car I confirmed that I would only be charged for the amount of gas I used which shouldn't have been much since the tank was almost full. When I checked my card statement thy charged me for he full tank, triple the cost of my original reservation. When I called to talk to them, they said it was on the receipt but the receipt wasn't printed properly because their printer was broken. I have contacted the corprotate office regarding the issue and am awaiting a response and refund.Reviewed 27 Jan. 2017

Pros:I liked they car itself and the price was good. But they do cut overhead to allow the good price.Cons:Customer service was terrible. The office is very small, cramped, and full of irate customers. You have to go into the office to return the car--and they are seriously understaffed. There was a very long line with only one register. They also provide very little guidance. The experience of returning the car took about 45 minutes. I felt that Kayak should issue a warning--"If contracting with with Payless, please allow for an extra hour." I felt terrible for the Payless staff--they seem to do their best in difficult circumstances. It must be a terrible place to work.Reviewed 19 Apr. 2017

Cons:Payless did not have its own facility, but said to use Budget/Avis. When I arrived, there was a line for Budget and for Avis but none for Payless. When I asked the staff where I should go, an employee told me he wasn't sure if there was a Payless person around and he would have to check "in a minute." He then proceeded to sit at his computer terminal and ignore me for ten minutes. I had to ask another employee who the "Payless person" was, and finally someone helped me. But then, even though I had prepaid for my reservation, it turned out that they didn't have any cars available and had to contact "dispatch" to get one. I ended up waiting a long time for a car. The car had a dirty windshield and bad wipers and was hard to see out of when it rained.Reviewed 4 Jul. 2021

Overworked staff, and oversold!Pros:The staff were overworked, the cars were oversold and the attendant had to go searching for a car. Usually I have a very seamless experience renting cars, and this took longer and was so uncertain. I almost thought I wasn’t going to have a car. The car itself was just fine and the drop off process very simple and fast.Cons:The process took longer than usual. You get what you pay forPros:Shuttle service fine. Car not particularly clean but to be fair it was Detroit in February.ReturnCons:Car return process not efficient. Where to park car not well marked. Had to hunt for outside agent to accept the car then had to go into office to get printed receipt. Being one hour late cost me 40% of cost of a full day and part of that "late" time was spent trying to get car checked in.Reviewed 29 Feb. 2016

Dirty Car, High Mileage, Bad mechanical conditionPros:short line (DTW). Fairly easy drop off and shuttle back to airportCons:Car was dirty, inside and out. Change left in cup holder, valet ticket on dash, trash on floor. Bad rattle underneath car (sounded like heat cover on catalytic converter was loose).
