The car ran poorly. It had over 53K miles and accelerated poorly and was sluggish. We were unable to swap it out because we were under tight time constraints and in different cities. The fuel economy was decent, but the car struggled to go over 60mph as needed on I-94.Reviewed 21 Jul. 2024

At the last minute, when I went to pick up the car, I was an 1-2 hour early. The Hertz representative charged me extra money for picking up my car early, which I think is ridiculous. You are allowed to pick up cars as early as previous nite with no charges in cities where office closes at 5 pm., but Hertz charged me for 2 hours extra. Ridiculous!Reviewed 23 Mar. 2024

I Was supposed to show up at 8pm, but got an earlier flight to keep my options open because I know there was a car shortage. Customer support on the phone said they couldn’t guarantee any thing earlier. I was expecting to sit at the Detroit airport for four hours. The guy behind the desk was Ramone, and he was professional, friendly, and made absolutely certain I got on the road almost as early as I could make it. Ramone didn’t just saved my bacon, but he helped me get to have a full Thanksgiving with a girl I’m in love with, all with a smile on his face. Please give him a raise or someone is going to hire him out from under you. I’ve usually rented from enterprise, but I’m going with y’all first from now on just because of that guy. Thanks! Y’all are the best!Reviewed 1 Dec. 2021

Service by staff at pick-up and drop off was great. The vehicle was not really what we had expected and I did have to take a lot of photographs due to damage and scratches on the vehicle upon pick-up.Reviewed 19 Oct. 2021

Pros:Staff was friendly and helpful. Upgraded the vehicle (with a charge) to make our trip the best it could be. Vehicle was brand new (3 miles on it when I drove it off the lot), clean, and had a full tank of gas.Cons:The rental counter was short staffed (1 person working the main counter, 1 person working the "Gold" counter) with several people standing in line. I arrived at 3:05 for a 3:00 pick-up and didn't get out the door until almost 4. Service was great, once I got to an agent.Reviewed 14 Apr. 2021

Top tips for renting a car from Hertz in Detroit

  • If you’re looking to book Hertz car rentals in Detroit, we recommend considering a compact car like the Ford Focus or similar. One of the key advantages for a model like this is its impressive fuel efficiency, which allows you to cover more ground without the need for frequent refueling stops. This not only saves on costs but also maximizes your sightseeing time. Note that Detroit's urban landscape can present challenges for larger vehicles, making the easy maneuverability of a compact car like the Ford Focus ideal for navigating through traffic and squeezing into tight parking spaces.
  • Traffic in Detroit is typical of major cities, ranging from moderate to severe at times, particularly during typical rush hours, which occur on weekdays between 7:30 am and 9 am and 5 pm and 6:30 pm. During these peak times, major roadways like I-75, I-94, and the Lodge Freeway (M-10) often become bumper-to-bumper, particularly in areas leading into and out of downtown Detroit. Additionally, highways like I-696 and I-275 that encircle the city can see increased traffic during these rush hour periods. We recommend planning the bulk of your travel around these hours whenever possible.
  • Detroit offers a range of parking options to accommodate visitors exploring the city. In downtown Detroit, there are numerous parking garages and lots available, such as the Two Detroit Garage, which provide convenient access to popular attractions, restaurants, and shops. Street parking is also available, but it may be limited in high-demand areas. Many hotels in downtown Detroit offer on-site parking for guests. Additionally, there are dedicated parking facilities near event venues, sports stadiums, and entertainment centers available for varying fees. It's important to be mindful of any time restrictions or regulations associated with parking in specific areas, as some spaces may have restrictions on the duration of parking.
  • One important tip for drivers in Detroit is to be aware of the numerous construction projects that may affect traffic patterns. The city often undergoes extensive roadwork and infrastructure improvements, leading to temporary closures and detours. Staying updated on current construction zones and road closures through local news sources or navigation apps can help drivers plan their routes more efficiently and avoid unexpected delays. Google Maps, for example, offers valuable features such as live traffic conditions and estimated travel times.
