Cons: We made a rental reservation online prior to arriving in Mexico. The rental rate was very, very inexpensive, but we figured that was because the region didn't have many renters. When we arrived at the rental facility after 6 hours of travel, burdened with our luggage, we were told that there was an additional $38/day rental cost to cover liability insurance. The fact that I have individual auto insurance and rental insurance through my credit card company didn't matter. What a complete and total ripoff. Because the car wasn't absolutely essential, we ended up calling a taxi and paying 1/3 of what we would have paid for the rental. When I make a booking that tells me all taxes and fees are included, I expect that to be true when I arrive to pick up my vehicle.

Close to fraud
Cons: There was no car available even though our name was confirmed and on their printout list. We then needed to search and find another car from Thrifty for $500 more for the week (twice as much). We were told by others that "Payless never has minivans" . We feel we should have the difference refunded. Otherwise, what's the point of making the reservation in the first place?

Pros: Nothing, they are awful!
Cons: They do not honor the price given. They ask that you pay $100 more a day on top of what they quoted you. They were rude and very unpleasant. I ended up going somewhere else. I do not recommend this place. I think Kayak should stop working with them. This was very disappointing. It makes me question booking anything else with Kayak.

Off Airport Car Rental
Pros: Customer Service
Cons: Hidden fees. They should be more direct.
16 Jan 2017
Pros: Battery died
rented for a certain price. Asked for an extention and gave us a triple raise on price. Very dissappointed.
Cons: should keep the same price deal as you rented and when asked for an extention, keep the same price as promised.
24 Jan 2017
Cons: the car was advertised at $1 a day but they insisted on this liability insurance that I already have with my own insurance and through amex so the car actually cost $46.00 a day not happy at all !!!

Beware of the "mandatory" incs...
Pros: The helpful friendly staff. The car was like new, and performed flawlessly.
Cons: The Mexican office added around $600 for Mexican liability incs!! This is currently in dispute through Payless so I have good expectations that we can recover this unnecessary "mandatory" unexpected expense..
8 Feb 2017
Pros: We couldn't remember where to drop off the car when we were leaving Puerto Vallarta, but we knew the office was off site from the airport. We were late for our flight, so we drove to the airport, and the agent at the airport took the car from us and drove it to the office with a very helpful attitude.

Process was a total scam the amount required for t
Cons: You get offered a very low rate for the car. But, upon arrival you are forced to buy required minimum insurance, which was quoted at oaver $300. They even lowered it to "negotiate". I've rented cars in Mexico before and I'm well aware 3PL insurance is required in Mexico and your insurance and your credit card insurance does not cover this. It normally ranges $10-15 a day MAX. So for a 7 day rental a $300 charge for this insurance was a total scam and makes it feel very timeshare like game playing. When I rent a car, show the price of the car to me and don't hike the cost of ancillary insurance to make up for the low cost of the actual car rental. It is a very shady way of operating a business and I walked out of the rental place, took a taxi and called it a day.
Cons: I didn't rent the car the price you showed was so low it was unbelievable when I got there they wanted to charge me something like $50 per day for insurance so the price went from something like $8 a week fro two weeks to over $1000 for two weeks it is a total rip OFF

Great Car, Great Rental
Pros: The car, the return process, the people. The pickup process was a little long, but acceptable.
Cons: Mexican Liability Insurance is required. I tried to find out the price before I went down and was unable to find out how much is it. I usually pay $15 per day and was charged approximately $20 per day I don't mind having to pay for the required insurance. I am annoyed that I cannot use that information in deciding from which company I will rent. This is true for every company.
26 Jul 2016
Cons: We booked the rental through Kayak before traveling to Puerto Vallarta. We were picked up at the airport and driven to the office even though we had paid extra to pick up the car at the airport. In the office they asked for my driver's license and credit card. Then I was informed that the rate I was given was the "standard" rate and that I had to purchase insurance and have a security deposit of almost $1,000 charged to my credit card. None of this was disclosed on the website. My credit card provides for rental car insurance worldwide along with my car insurance from Geico. Do not fall for the insurance scam. Whatever the rate you are quoted they will try to up sell you. And THEY BLAMED THE CONFUSION ON BOOKING THROUGH KAYAK rather than the Alamo website.
15 Jan 2017
Pros: When we arrived to pick up our car, we were told we had to get required insurance. The insurance cost would have quadrupled the cost of renting the car. We decided not to rent it. On the plus side, the agent was very courteous and helped us get a taxi.

Run by unsavory and deceptive people
Pros: Nothing, it was a really bad experience
Cons: They did not have the car we had rented (an 8 passenger van) and tried to claim a 7-passenger van wa the same thing. Then they tried to give us a horrrible, smelly decrepit 12 passenger van without seat belts. And they wouldn't give us a discount when we had no choice but to stay with a 7 passenger van (we had eight people so one lap). Then when we returned the car they claimed there were scratches on the rear bumper and tried to make us pay more. We couldn't even see the scratches they were talking about as there were tons of scratches already all over the car. It seemed like a scam! We just left and I'm half expecting them to try and take more money from our crest card. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE!!!
25 Feb 2017
Pros: The Alamo agent help put us in touch with a competitor who did have a similar car available. The Alamo agent also helped make sure that we paid on leave the original estimate when we had to change rental car companies. We ended up with a car that seats enough people but didn't carry enough baggage from Hertz. The only upshot was that the Hertz rental lot did not require a shuttle from the terminal.
Cons: The minivan that we reserved was not available when we arrived. We ended up with a smaller car for the same price from Hertz. If you want anything other than a small or midsize car, it is probably worth a call ahead to make sure they have it since they list more cars than they actually have on the site.
10 Jul 2017
Cons: The rental location was listed as being located in the terminal. It wasn't. They took my family to a location off site. When we got there, we found out the low rental price quoted on Kayak would be multiplied more than ten times by Mexico's mandatory rental insurance. Then we were invited to attend a time share presentation to bring down the price. We walked out and hailed a cab. This was with ALAMO. Don't rent from them in Puerto Vallarta.
Cons: Didn't have the right car and then had to pay for the upgrade because the right car wasn't there

No reason to use budget
Pros: I thought I would like being with an international rental agency, but turns out they gouge you fire cash even when giving you a trickle vehicle.
Cons: The price and the lies about our ability to find better. A 4 day rental cost $360 for a tiny Nissan Versa that hardly fit my family. For a Jetta from Gecko rental cars it a have been $200. They sold me hard and I was too tired to argue. Gecko, who we rented with later on, are a fantastic local company who price fairly, give you quality vehicles, and deserve your business. Never use budget or and of the on airport rentals.
2 Jan 2017
Pros: The car itself was just fine.
Cons: The actual pickup location added about 100% in extra taxes and fees from what was both advertised and reserved. It literally doubled the cost of the car. Very, very misleading.
7 Jan 2017
Horrible customer service and rates changed
Pros: The car was clean
Cons: I was upset of the fact the rates went up from what I had reserved online to what I ended up paying. Horrible customer service in pick up. Will never use them again!

NEVER Rent from Budget Puerto Vallarta - RIP OFF A
Pros: Car was clean
Cons: 1. High-Pressure tactics about taking insurance... You are not obligated to take their insurance (Visa Cards often cover you), and they charge you 90% of the cost of the rental in INSURANCE - my car cost $200/day !!!!! It was just a VW Jetta....
2. They refuse to rent you the car, unless you take the minimum insurance
3. They hold your CC hostage for many thousands of dollars, unless you take their insurance.
4. Rent from: Gecko or SIXT - honest and good people who INCLUDE the cost of the insurance in the price per day!!!
12 Jan 2017
Rented the car for 5.00 per day
Pros: When I got to budget they charged 48.00 for mandatory insurance while hassling us to look at time shares for a free car rental. Claimed the car rental was in airport but it was off sight.
19 Apr 2017
The insurance cost more than the rental!
Pros: The car was fine and the people in the Puerto Vallarta office spoke English which was nice. It was nice to be able to pick up in Puerto Vallarta and drop off in Guadalajara.
Cons: The one way fee of $200 seemed excessive but the fact that the mandatory insurance cost even more was totally unexpected. Although Mexican drivers are crazy so while expensive, the insurance is probably worth it if you get in an accident. It would have been nice to know the cost of the insurance ahead of time. It was unanticipated and cut into our budget.
Cons: I did not rent the vehicle they wanted to charge me twice the amount
10 Oct 2016
waych out for insurance
Pros: easy location to airport
Cons: they scam you for insurance. $29-$30 a day so they cheap week winds up at over $200 for the week
5 Jan 2017
Cons: The car rental was $10 dollar per day. They forced me two take two types of insurance packages. I had to convince them that my credit card covered all damages. I had to take the third-person liability insurance at a rate of $32 per day I really needed a car as there was no alternative. The total cost for the most basic car was $109 compared to the quoted price of $37. The staff was rude and deceiving. They kept telling me that I had a good deal and that I will not not get any better deal. Also, they insisted that I was told that the reservation called out that additional charges for insurance. After asking them to show me this disclaimer, which actually read "other charges MAY NOT be included in the quote", they insisted on the meaning/translation of it.
The fact that really offended me on a moral level was this: They offered me a GPS device for free because of the "inconvenience" I went through. I declined. When reviewing my receipt, I noticed a GPS device charge for about $15/day. I complained about the charge and I was given a bogus excuse on the grounds that the GPS charge was already included in the insurance package I was forced to take!!!
The other problem was that many customer were in the same situation as I was which created a long wait. I took me one hour to get the car and more than 30 min to return it!
12 Apr 2017
Bait and Switch!!!
Pros: Original pricing of $230 per week
Cons: There was a previously undisclosed charge for Insurance of over $400 when I got to the off site rental office. Never rent from this company. I have always rented from Hertz and will continue to do so.
15 May 2017
Pros: The service was good
Cons: That they don't respect the price you put in your website from $250 to a total they wanted to charge me $900dollars
Cons: We reserved an Intermediate car. When we got the the counter 1 hour at PVR after our reserved time, because our flight was late, we were told they gave our car away and now only had an Economy car left -- at double the price. When we said we were unhappy and expected them, at least, to match the original price, the woman at the counter "called to check" and then told us matter-of-factly that that car was now gone too and they had nothing left. Even a tiny bit of feigned sympathy or apology would have been appreciated but we got none.
16 Apr 2017
very well run office, lousy price clarity
Pros: The people were nice an helpful and it all went quickly.
Cons: The fact that it was not at all clear at the time of booking that the price would primarily come in the form of the rental car insurance.
23 Jun 2017
Really bad experience
Pros: Nothing to like
Cons: Reserved a minivan and ended up with a smaller suv with a very tight 3rd row / trunk. It seams like they don't actually have minivans available, but still advertise it. I was traveling with two toddlers and after a 6 hour flight I just wanted to get in a car and go to the hotel and I ended up accepting the smaller car without a price reduction. The car was all damaged (had to take a lot of pictures for proof) and dirty. I got the car with 5/8 of a gas tank and returned it with the same level, but the agent wanted me to pay for a full tank. After arguing for a while I got the agent to accept that I was returning the suv with the same gas level. The price is not even close to what I was supposed to pay... 3X once you include insurance, since they didn't accept my credit card insurance. Overall zero reliability and very bad (and sad) experience.

They did not have the car
Cons: They did not have a car. They were nice enough to help me friend another company who had a minivan and the price was about the same. I would have preferred to not have to shop around the other companies. Ultimately got my car at national.
Cons: I have a premium car rental insurance with Amex that I pay $24 per rental. National wouldn't that insurance and wants us to settle with their for $40 per day. Upon my return and checkin with amex, it seems that agent misled us
14 Feb 2017
Pros: The personnel were very friendly
Cons: It is a little pricy
16 Mar 2017
Pros: didn't rent car
Cons: when we got there, were hit up for a USA$22/day insurance fee, unannounced when reserving
Cons: Poor and slow pickup and transfer.
The office is a mess in a hard to get to location
Staff is rude and nasty.
When I booked no one informed me of mandetory insurance that is 50% of the rental fee.
Nice surprise that both the booking agent price line and thrifty left out or was hidden

Thrifty Car Rental Puerto Vallarta
Pros: Nice staff, I ended up with a good car.
Cons: The final price was significantly higher than advertised. Did not have the car when I showed up. No guarantee that they will have the car even if you pre-pay, our trip was during the high season (last week of December).
30 Jan 2017
The rental prices are insane due to the insurance
Pros: I did not rent a car it was so costly for insurance
Pros: Liability only insurance was $28 per day. There is no sign at the airport directing you to this company. One staff member in the office to process the paperwork for cars going out and coming back. Between trying to find the company 30 minutes and the one staff in the office it seemed to take an hour and half to rent the car. To top it off I have never paid so much for liability insurance only. The girl said the rate was higher because of the holiday season. Usually I am out the door with ins and car for $250. This was $375 for 6 days in a Jetta. Seemed like a scam.
Cons: The pick up and drop off process was like going back to the early 1990s. Definitely could be much more streamlined. Also, our car was not clean when we got it (sweat stain on the passenger seat). We watched a couple guys wipe it down and spray some cleaner in the car right before we took delivery of the vehicle for the rental.
