Pros:There was nothing about renting from Payless that was positive.Cons:1. The pick-up location was off-site of the airport 2. We waited 40 minutes for the pick-up van 3. When we returned car, there were customers returning cars, too. All were over charged, as were we. We were charged for not returning vehicle with gas, even though the tank had been filled less than a quarter mile from return location. 4. The office was completely disorganized. It normally takes less than 5 minutes to turn in a car with other companies. It took 30 minutes with Payless. 5. This was the 1st and last time we will rent from Payless.Reviewed 8 Aug. 2016

Cons:I had a reservation to pick up the car at 9PM. When we got to Charlotte at 9PM, we called Payless multiple times to get the shuttle so we could pick up the car. They never picked up. We used the 800 number to contact the company, and the company send that they would send a shuttle. 1.5 hours later, we found out from someone who works at the airport that the company has been closed since 5PM, and they already ran out of cars. Luckily, Budget owns Payless and rented us a car at the same price. I would not book with Payless again, even if my life depended on it.Reviewed 19 Apr. 2016

Unprofessional Facility - Numerous IssuesPros:Nothing.Cons:1. Small, unprofessional facility with few cars (at least upon arrival - more cars in lot upon return). 2. Staff not at all friendly, communicative or helpful. 3. Was told at checkout (and made to sign a form) the staff had inspected car and noted any damage. I examined form carefully, noted NO DAMAGE COMMENTS. Upon going outside to assigned vehicle, found large, deep scratches (appears to be KEYING) on right side of Rv vehicle with one very long scratch (one over 5 feet). Took photos and went back inside to inform staff and FORCE THEM to note damages on the form. Really? What lazy, staff. What would have happened had I NOT inspected vehicle and brought it back with scratches? Very UNPROFESSIONAL!!!! 4. Costs were much HIGHER than Kayak reservation form online. Local Payless (GREAT NAME) had me pay additional taxes and upon refusal of damage waiver and all the high profit margin insurances, was told that I MUST take daily roadside support at $5.99 per day. I expected to pay about $230 TOTAL and actually paid $275.Reviewed 10 Nov. 2016

Never using Payless againPros:Thank goodness Avis was able to rent me a car.Cons:Payless allowed me to book a rental car for 9pm, which is when they close. I was not able to rent a car after my flight arrived on Friday night. No one answered the phone and I was left stranded at the CLT airport waiting for a shuttle for 30 minutes. Obviously the shuttle never came. Unreliable, unprofessional, and disgusting. Went to Avis who was able to help me. The Avis counter said we might as well call it "Worthless" instead of Payless. Avis rents cars to upset Payless customers every day, and said that if Payless runs out of cars, they just close shop. Will never be using them again.Reviewed 3 Oct. 2017

Need to provide their rental instructions PRIOR toPros:I liked the price, but never got the car so price becme a mute point. The booking price online also is not the final price. You don't see that until you get there.Cons:Ridiculous, unmarked location. Does not say hotel when provided address. Ridiculous rules for locals that are not provided when booking the rental. Locals should have current address on license and provide 2 recent pay stubs or bills with this address in order to rent a car. What rental company requires this much information and DOES NOT make that clear when booked? Went to sixt and they were excellent. I will never rent from Payless again. They are a headache and have ridiculous guidelines. Most places just need a current license and major credit card.Reviewed 23 Nov. 2015

A poor startCons:Waited for a shuttle at Charlotte airport for 20 minutes and then called twice to arrange a pickup. The first time the phone for the local office rang and rang... never answered. So I called the 800 number which promised to contact the local office. Continued waiting another 20 minutes and called the local office again. This time they picked up and promised that the shuttle would arrive in 10 minutes. Waited some more, but no shuttle. Since I knew the Payless counter was in a nearby hotel, several of us took the hotel shuttle instead. When I got to the counter I never received an explanation or apology. Once I got the car matters improved. Drove 1000 miles in a week with no problem. Had a very pleasant drop off experience in RaleighReviewed 4 Jun. 2016

Not great service, but was it their fault?Pros:Nothing, I suppose it was easy to drop it off with the return guys in the parking deck, but I was told the wrong location and everyone complained that Payless had again told someone the wrong place to return.Cons:They also told me the wrong drop off point here in Charlotte, so when I went to the airport it was madness getting the car returned. They accepted it at the rental car location in the parking deck, but nearly refused the paperwork when I walked inside and waited in line at Alamo desk where I was told to go. The lady told me I would have to wait for an email from her boss to get my receipt and final charges, and here a full week later I've not heard a word from them. The price was great, but I would not use their service again.Reviewed 6 Jul. 2017

Worst rental car experience EVERCons:Car #1 flooded from the inside when it rained. Car #2 (the "replacement") had a busted taillight and the tire kept going flat. Car #1: The first car they gave me had an overwhelming, absolutely unbearable air freshener smell that they tried to "air out" by opening the windows when they pulled up the car for me to take. It turns out, the air freshener smell was a result of the rental company trying to cover up the smell of musty, sitting water, because the car had a leak in the hood/windshield somewhere, which caused the car to flood on from the inside when it rained. Go figure, it poured for two days while I rented it, and not only did that destroy some of my personal belongings, I had to drive to work with about an inch of water sloshing around the floor while I waited for them to get me a replacement car. Car #2: (the "replacement") It took the better part of the day for the rental company to replace my car. They failed to give me sufficient paperwork to prove the exchange (and then they almost tried to pretend like they didn't know what car I had). This car was all scraped up on the driver's side, had a busted left tail light, and the front driver's side tire went low 3 times in 2 days. When I returned the car, I asked for a partial refund, but the "manager" claimed my AAA discount covered my "concerns." Inconvenient location (10 minutes from the airport). Terrible customer service. Spare yourself the hassle.Reviewed 20 Nov. 2015

Never againPros:priceCons:1. shuttle from airport only ran every 30 mins. 2. car needed oil change and tire pressure sensor was on the entire time 3. charged $200 to my car on pickup, still waiting for credit to lower charge to agreed upon rate. 4. i was told office opened on Sunday at 9am to drop off car, but wasn't told shuttle wasn't avail for another 30 mins. fortunately for this rental they were in hotel and i was able to use hotel shuttle to airport. It wasn't worth the slightly better price to have to go off airport for rental.Reviewed 23 Apr. 2018

Pros:Great value eazy to access from airport. Even though office check in person was by herself because staff called in sick, she was very nice and quickly got people into their cars.Cons:Running short staffed on arrival pickup and picked up at different location that sign indicated. If another party calling hadn't been given new location would have missed bus and caused additional delay.Reviewed 23 Nov. 2015

Worst experience everCons:The pickup location given by kayak is incorrect. I reached and found a boat repair shop! On asking around the workers told me lot of people come asking but there's no car rental here. Customer care didn't pick up the phone. Glad I didn't pay for it,. I had to drive to Atlanta and that got delayed. Never using kayak again.Reviewed 7 Nov. 2016
