Refused to honor my Visa collision insurance and forced me to overpay!Pros:Car was fine, and I was able to drop it off at the airport before they opened.Cons:I showed them the letter from Wells Fargo stating that my Visa covers collision damage "up to the entire value of the vehicle" but they refused to accept it because it did not show a dollar limit. Never had this problem before with any rental company in my last 15 Costa Rica rentals.Reviewed 31 May 2018

They were not there when we arrived.Pros:NothingCons:I called their international number to provide my flight information and was assured that someone's would be there to pick me up when I arrived even if my flight was delayed. I was left stranded at the airport with no car and had to rush make alternate araingements. Scary and unfrofessional treatment.Reviewed 25 Apr. 2017

Kayak good - Allianz Travel Insurance Policy - InvalidPros:Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745Cons:Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. Kindly awaiting your response and the reimbursement of the insurance costs. Best regardsReviewed 18 Apr. 2017

Blindsided by "Required Insurance Coverage"Cons:When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!Reviewed 13 Apr. 2017

Insurance Scam and damage scam--awfulPros:Our vehicle was fine and available but had many scratches and a dented bumper.Cons:We were forced to pay for full coverage insurance from thrifty at the counter by the agent. We had already purchased insurance thru Allianz when we booked online. This was refused. We had to pay an additional 45$ per day on top of our plan we already paid for. We refused and they wouldn't give us a car or lesser basic option. Since it was late at night with a child and we were offsite we felt very vulnerable with no great options. Our quote of 301$ became 698$ plus 90$ we already paid. When we returned the manage told us there was a basic package for 17$ per day. Also they blamed us for a dent in bumper which was another scam. We had photos to dispute. We were not charged since we had full coverage but if we hadn't they planned to hit us up for that too. Still waiting to hear back from management at Thrifty Liberia. Stay away and document any damage w photos when checking out. Always worth it.Reviewed 4 Apr. 2017

Bait and Switch!Pros:NothingCons:The online price was $122. The note said that we may be required to pay for insurance at the desk; typical insurance was $12-$14/day. Research said that my Collision Damage Waiver on my credit card would not be honored unless I had a letter from the company stating it would be honored in Costa Rica. I had that in hand and still they would not accept it. The total I would have had to pay? $464! We walked away, hired a driver/taxi whenever we wanted to go somewhere and still saved money. I will not book a car through Kayak ever again.Reviewed 1 Apr. 2017

Gov't Required Insurance is 2x as much as the rentPros:Close to airport with easy shuttle transfers.Cons:We arrived in the evening with a full-size SUV reservation, I do not believe we had a full-size as it was the last car in the lot, still we paid full price and the insurance is insane! Not their fault but they could warn you before you arrive, wont let you rent without itReviewed 28 Mar. 2017

Embarrassing service. Never renting from Thrifty aPros:Nothing. They didn't show and didn't answer the phone. Even after I called to confirm before we let.Cons:No shuttle was at the airport. Nobody answered and we ended up having to pay $600 and rented a car all week that we didn't want. Thanks thrifty- you made me spend almost half of my budget for the week on a car we didn't want- all because you lied to me.Reviewed 25 Mar. 2017
