Be preparedCons:We booked our vehicle online through Kayak and also purchased insurance. Upon arrival at Thrifty, we were told that they would not accept the insurance and that we would have to purchase our insurance from Thrifty at a cost of over $700. It was basically "take it or leave it". Why does Kayak allow insurance to be sold through their website when it is invalid? We are very upset with this transaction and I would not recommend anyone to book through Kayak. Book directly with the car rental agency so you will know your final cost beforehand. Be prepared.Reviewed 5 Mar. 2017

Embarrassing service. Never renting from Thrifty aPros:Nothing. They didn't show and didn't answer the phone. Even after I called to confirm before we let.Cons:No shuttle was at the airport. Nobody answered and we ended up having to pay $600 and rented a car all week that we didn't want. Thanks thrifty- you made me spend almost half of my budget for the week on a car we didn't want- all because you lied to me.Reviewed 25 Mar. 2017

They were not there when we arrived.Pros:NothingCons:I called their international number to provide my flight information and was assured that someone's would be there to pick me up when I arrived even if my flight was delayed. I was left stranded at the airport with no car and had to rush make alternate araingements. Scary and unfrofessional treatment.Reviewed 25 Apr. 2017

Good car. Beware insurancePros:4wd vehicle is necessary on anything but major roads. Our manual Terios SUV was a little bumpy but handled very rough dirt roads without any problems in first gear. No joke, the dirt roads near and in two national parks in Guanacaste were extremely steep and rocky, and were only one lane in some areas. Also GPS is indispensable because many roads aren't signed. Easy shuttle from Liberia. They met us just outside the terminal and called a day or two before to confirm (showed up as 516 area code).Cons:They made us buy collision, theft, damage insurance, etc even though we had a letter from our credit card company. They didnt like the wording. Said we needed letterhead, specified dollar amount of coverage (ours had no limit), specify Costa Rica (ours only listed countries not covered). Also third party liability coverage is mandatory. We also had battery issue with GPS unit which kept shutting itself off. Overall cost was lower than competition even with their deluxe insurance. Insurance, gps, extra driver, taxes, fees, etc will be double or triple cost of the car itself.Reviewed 12 Feb. 2017

Pros:Staff tried to scam us into using their insurance despite having more than sufficient coverage through a top tier credit card. Unfortunately all other rental cars were sold out in the area, so we simply hired a driver and then rented locally to our hotel without any issue.Reviewed 19 Feb. 2019

Pros:not very muchCons:(1) Thrifty Liberia wanted to sell us an additional insurance for ~$900. I declined and had to argue for 1 hour to get it reduced. We are insured via our home car insurance as well as the credit card company, but I had to have the credit card company sent a formal letter to prove it. I ended up paying $684.89 additional insurance for nothing, which is more than the rental cost of the car! The entire check out procedure took 1.5 hours (2) Thrifty Liberia took $5,000 from our credit card (which they later credited) (3) We expected a a premium SUV (Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder or Chevy Tahoe etc) and ended up getting a worn down Toyota Landcruiser with 85,000 miles on it and many scratches (4) The car was in terrible shape: Tires were under-inflated tires and the car was not very clean. I will provide my comments to TripAdvisor and will recommend to avoid Thrift Costa Rica specifically and Thrifty in general like the plague. Thrifty Costa Rica is a rip-off!Reviewed 18 Jul. 2016

About average for Costa Rica rentals- insurance isPros:Counter people were friendly and professional. The car was the model I reserved, was ready for me, and was in great shape. The mechanic there was able to take the luggage basket off the roof rack bars so I could put surfboards on it.Cons:My rental quote was $498.50. My actual bill was $807 with mandatory insurance, not including any damage coverage. What I didn't like is more of a note about renting cars in Costa Rica than renting from Thrifty. I've gotten used to the idea that my final bill will be double the rate I see on Kayak, once they add in the insurance. What I hate is the scammy way the insurance is managed in Costa Rica. I've gotten used to pushy salespeople telling me my credit card doesn't cover damage to the car in Costa Rica, and that there is mandatory insurance that everyone needs to purchase regardless of any other insurance you have. If some liability insurance is mandatory, why is it not included in the rental price? If it is mandatory, why is there no sign in any rental office that says something like "Mandatory insurance is $25/day". Why is every insurance option price handwritten on the back of a piece of paper, rather than clearly laid out on a price list? It creates an impression that the rental car company is pricing their insurance to be as high as they think I'll pay, rather than a standard rate. In the future I will contact the rental office in LIberia directly after making a reservation, and ask for the total reservation cost, including the minimum mandatory coverage. If a rental company is unwilling to quote me my total bill, including minimum insurance coverage, I'll cancel my reservation and reserve elsewhere.Reviewed 1 Dec. 2015

Blindsided by "Required Insurance Coverage"Cons:When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!Reviewed 13 Apr. 2017
