Child stood on seat and jumped up and down, crawled under seats, threw ipad on my foot repeatedly, spilled his drink all over himself and his seat, screamed whenever his seat belt had to go on or his table top couldn't be down. At one point, the dad lost his temper, swore at the child, and covered him with a blanket in a big screaming match before doing up his seat belt--I was afraid he had smothered him but it had the effect of calming him down. No attendant even tried to intervene apart from asking "can I see your kid's boarding pass?" People should have to disclose when they are travelling with a child with severe behavioural problems and attendants should rescue anyone forced to sit beside one or at least make the parent care for the child. Also, a minimum of crackers or pretzels would be nice with drink on 5-hour flight. The entertainment system wasn't operating correctly and kept having to be reset by crew or reset itself. And, after first class etc. board, why don't they board the people at the back of the plane first, not the ones at the front? It took forever because people in front zones hadn't settled into their seats before people from the back zones tried to board."

On the whole, not a bad flight experience, just the usual frustration in the process. I long for the days when flying was a pure pleasure."

Instead of asking them for the name of their baby, the gate employee kept asking them for the lap child name! This occurred over and over until finally they asked for the bany's name. The lady who is from Chicago started practically wagging her finger and just saying NO! to bags that might be too large. How she did this was overly rude even when the bag fit in the metal sizer!"

The check-in staff are grumpy at best. Catering is as bad as it gets. The airline food is a throwback to the 1970s. Drink selection is poor--no fizzy water/soda water/seltzer. Only regular water, coke and sprite, and no spirits at all. Very bad wine and beer with only one choice for each: Great Wall wine, which is sweet and gross, and warm slimy swill beer. The airline could do better by upgrading the website system and having better staff training for customer service."

The food was surprisingly fabulous! Authentic Chinese cuisine and tasty. Several passengers did not review the regulations and were pretty rude when Air China crew told them to turn off and put away cell phones. Crew handled this well."

I didn't realize until halfway through the flight that we needed to get our own beverages and throw away our own trash (different than the other airlines)- would have appreciated this being announced. I was confused during boarding process about when to stand and when to board, but watched the people around me and figured it out. We took off late/ landed late, but I was able to make my connection in Beijing without any stress so was happy."

NO seat need to be upright. Would not take that airline company again."

I was particularly surprised at their approach to any passenger who could potentially cause problems for the flight or other passengers. I'm American and to be frank, we are total jerks in flight. You tell an American to put away their mobile device and as soon as you turn your back they're back at it. Americans in general are unreasonable people. The flight attendants' approach to solving problems before they have an opportuniy to become problems was a sight to see, friendly, non-confrontational. They brought beverages around at regular intervals which was very comforting. Also, not only were blankets and pillows at every seat before takeoff, but they were fairly decent. Very comfortable. On a US carrier you can expect to be charged extra for any little thing, and so you don't even bother to ask for it. On Air China you don't have to worry about it."

Cons: "But it takes more just being nice to be a good service. I always flight business and occasionally first class within the Star Alliance system. I'm a Chinese and I love my people. By still keeping my Chinese citizenship after 27 years living in US may show that. But I have to say my dear Chinese crew members always miss some details on service. For instance, this time on my way back to JFK, they woke us up five hours before landing to serve us the light meal, that other Star Alliance airlines usually do around two hours ahead of landing. I took Air China four times in the past 10 months and they always did the same thing, even though I specifically requested that don't wake me up if I'm sleeping. They turned on the cabin lights and talked with passengers next to me very loud. I hope it's not the case that they serve the light meal so early in order to get their jobs done earlier ahead of landing. Other Star Alliance airlines never do this kind of thing."
Cons: "The staff were rude and over all air china is quite disorganized. Their website barely works and it was impossible to get any real answers out of the agents on the phone. I tried to request a celiac or gluten free meal and it took 3 phone calls to get an agent who was aware there were even choices. Also, as I'm aware I'm flying in another country I would have like to see more English speaking competence amongst staff flying an international flight from Asia to Canada and back. The staff were not helpful. Like drones with no time for you. This to me is not service. And an airline is providing a service."
