FAQs - booking Iceland flights

  • Are there any nonstop flights from Vancouver to Iceland?

Icelandair operates nonstop flights to Reykjavik (KEF) on select days of the week. These flights leave in the afternoon and will get you to Iceland in under 8 hours. You can upgrade to EconoFlex to have a checked bag included with your ticket. With Icelandair, you can bring one carry-on free of charge on Economy Light. To have a checked bag added, upgrade to Economy Standard.

  • What travel documents do I need for my flight to Iceland?

In addition, you should have a return ticket or proof of onward travel if asked.

  • Where should I fly if I want to visit the Faroe Islands?

To experience the dramatic landscapes, towering cliffs, and cozy villages of these North Atlantic islands, flying into Reykjavik is your best choice. Top tips for finding cheap flights to Iceland

  • Your journey will begin at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). It's a good idea to arrive early, and while you wait, you can spend your time at the Plaza Premium Lounge on level 3 of the international terminal. In there, you can enjoy refreshments, TVs, and Wi-Fi.
  • If you want to lessen your environmental impact, consider flying direct. On average, nonstop flights produce about 25% less emissions than connecting flights. In addition, you can participate in WestJet’s program, to combat climate change by buying carbon-offset credits for your travels.
  • An alternative airport you can fly out of is Abbotsford International Airport (YXX), located about 65 km east of Vancouver. Flights from this airport, however, are likely to have a layover and add a little more time to your journey.
  • Streamline your arrival at Keflavik Airport (KEF) by arranging a meet and greet service. You will be welcomed with a personal assistant who will escort you through the airport and passport control and help you with your bags. This can be especially useful for first-time flyers.
  • Consider upgrading to the EconoFlex fare on WestJet for added flexibility. With this fare, you can change or cancel your flight with no fee, select your seat in advance, and bring one checked bag free of charge.

Great flight, great landing, nice staff. Our seats were a little cramped.

Overall good experience. The wait for baggage at our destination was quite long, but other than that everything was good as expected

Do not fly on WestJet if you have a connection. It failed to integrate with my connecting Delta flight and I almost missed it.

The experience was good just the upcharge of over a hundred dollars was not cool.

There was a man who was very rude at boarding. On the other hand personal bag measuring box is too small compared to USA airlines,

The process and flight were both smooth and trouble free

everything was fine expect massive delays - not the airline’s fault

Seat back entertainment monitors would be nice. We did enjoy the In-Flight WiFi.

Our flight schedule was changed over six times, ultimately leaving us with a layover much shorter than we originally booked, which meant a panicked run through the airport. And the entertainment screen didn't function. As I've come to expect with Delta, a very mediocre and not customer-focused experience. This is on top of an outbound flight that was so delayed by mechanical issues, we had to spend the night at our layover city.

Staff were courteous and helpful. The only negative was the flight delays (which are usually unavoidable) and the high baggage price.

Flight departed significantly late with no announcements being made. Woman behind me would not allow me to recline my seat so I was unable to comfortably sleep. Flight attendant not very responsive. Slow to pick up garbage after meal. Not a good experience at all. I felt like cattle rather than like a valued customer

Got denied my flight was told on Google that Air Canada was supposed to book me a flight back home because I never was able to go to my destination. They did not help me whatsoever. I had to book a whole new flight for that reason I would write this is zero

The plane was delayed an hour. Heard from other passengers that the Vancouver connection to SFO was never on-time.

Our original flight was cancelled due to mechanical reasons. This cancellation caused us to miss our connection and we were not able to get another flight for 3 days and then needed to make an extra connection to get there. Air Canada did not rebook our flight for us, it took several hours of talking with staff in the airport and making phone calls to get the flights rebooked. We never received a voucher for our hotel and meals while we were waiting for our next flight and it was only after talking to several staff that we were provided some general information about how we could be reimbursed. We tried entering our ticket information in the website provided, but it did not recognize our flight information. When we asked someone on the phone about this they said we'd need to contact the customer relations department, but that it's not possible to reach them on the phone. I don't understand what company would have a customer relations department that you can't talk to. We spent about $1,000 for hotels and meals for our family while waiting for a flight home and I'm not confident we will ever get reimbursed for this. I understand that mechanical issues can happen to any airline, but this is the 4th time that this has happened to my wife and I on Air Canada and we have only flown Air Canada about 8 times, so this is not a good track record. Also, when we did finally get a flight home (which was also delayed due to mechanical problems), we were told we couldn't bring a standard carry on even though the information on our ticket clearly indicated that we could bring a carry on bag. The staff at the gate were not understanding about this situation.

Hoping for small compasation for having to rebook my trip back cause i had to miss 6 hrs work

Extremely disappointing. My original Denver–Vancouver–Bangkok itinerary was cancelled due to a mechanical issue. I was not proactively supported and had to drive back home after already reaching the airport. Communication was poor throughout, and attempts to contact customer service resulted in being on hold for nearly three hours without reaching anyone. Instead of being rebooked on the same direct routing the following day, I was rerouted onto a much longer itinerary via multiple cities and airlines, which resulted in arriving approximately 30 hours later than scheduled. At Denver airport, there was no visible Air Canada representative available to properly assist. Ground staff offered no real support beyond directing passengers to a phone number. There was no clear communication, no ownership, and no meaningful customer care during a major disruption. The final journey involved three flights instead of the original two, significantly increasing travel time and stress. Overall, the handling of the cancellation and lack of customer support was unacceptable. What could have been better? Clear communication during the cancellation Accessible customer service (phone support that actually answers) Proper in-person assistance at the airport Rebooking onto a comparable routing rather than a significantly longer one

Mechanical issue caused me to be stuck in Vancouver for 2 days

I explained this tragedy already with Jazz It was terrible starting with Jazz delayed 3 times so that I missed my direct flight to Mexico City and the only option was a 19 hour trip to Toronto and then down to Mexico City I was delayed by a day I had to sleep in tbe Airport on a hard bench I was given vouchers which were not honored I had no place to eat until 0545 and then catch my flight which was boarding I went to the AC counter to c/o and that was to no avail I then had the experience of my suitcase being lost and no clothes gor 2 days

Short flight, you can't do much. On nice days, announce the islands they're flying over.

they were super helpful. Agents at the desk got me on an earlier flight and I was able to get home several hours earlier.

Iceland Air severely damaged a checked bag. Additionally, the gate agent caused issues for many passengers who had standard-sized onboard bags that would have passed inspection by any other airline.

The staff was kind and helpful. There was no food, and you needed to bring your own earphones to use the entertainment, which I didn’t know.

Delays at check-in, seemed like they were short ground staff at the time and some passengers needed extra processing.

Food - Non-Existent. You pay for everything. It is strictly Pay-to-Play!

The Experience Was Torture Spend a few extra dollars and avoid Icelandair at all costs. There is absolutely no refreshments, no food, no drinks. Only water, coffee, tea are free and at only half a tiny cup. Entertainment is limited selection of films, shows and mostly outdated. The seats are smaller than usual, with no cushion, no pillows, no blankets. First time in my life have I witness an airline asking for donations in spare change for a charity. With all the money Icelandair saves by starving the passenger, they can afford to give this charity on their own.

If there was a disclaimer regarding food service or lack thereof, l missed it. If l had known l would have prepared better. Same with transferring at Reykjavik. No information about disembarking via stairs into rain, slush and puddles deep enough to swallow a foot. After being treated to haute cuisine restaurants and warm inviting environment during the flight, the airport is, let’s be kind, disappointing. Plane was comfortable, Airbus, staff were welcoming enough. I would likely try the route again. Maybe have a night and day in Iceland. Maybe not.

They had a 4 hour delay and left my luggage in Iceland and it didn’t arrive in Portland until 11/1

It was too cold in the plane my feet froze

Service was excellent. Food and drinks were very good except for a greasy lump of a donut at the end of the flight that left us both feeling internally disgusted.

Handling our luggage was the biggest issue - they lost it and we got it almost 3 days later. Really threw off the beginning of our trip and we really had to change our itinerary accordingly.
