Hidden fees, long waitsPros:Car was fine. Your average mid size car.Cons:At pickup, we waited in line for 30 minutes, then they charged me for the entire rental cost, plus a $200 deposit. They also charged an additional $10.25/day for my husband to be included as a driver. At drop-off, they charged me the full rental price again (minus the deposit), and said the deposit would be refunded, but that it could take up to 21 days, depending on my financial institution. So, I paid the rental cost twice, and have to wait now for a refund. No one was outside when we dropped off, so we had to wait in line again, for about 20 minutes, just to drop off. They refused to rent me a car, despite my reservation...Pros:I guess it was convenient that the guy refused me so quickly. I didn't waste too much time there.Cons:I was told that since I lived within a few miles of the car rental vicinity, I needed to have car insurance in order to rent a car there. I had purchased additional rental insurance specifically for this trip, but apparently that wasn't adequate because I needed "actual car insurance". He then points to a sign placed on top of the counter that stated this, as if I should have seen it when I was placing the reservation online 2 weeks ago... DO NOT RENT IF YOU ARE LOCALPros:Nothing.Cons:My partner and I showed up to rent a car to take a vacation over the holiday weekend only to be told that unless we can provide proof of car insurance as well as pay a $350 deposit they would not rent a car to us. (you MUST have your own car insurance through a major provider for them to even consider renting a car to you) We live in Manhattan and do not own cars therefore we were stranded at the EWR airport without a car to take our vacation. We had to book day of with Thrifty Car Rent paid DOUBLE what the rental should have cost.Reviewed 10 Jul. 2017

Advantage provides no advantageCons:When I went to pick up my car rental at Newark Liberty Airport I was greeted by a surly representative for Advantage and it went downhill from there. Kayak or Advantage should have noted that Advantage will only rent to people who have an automobile with insurance coverage. I rent vehicles because I don't have a vehicle, therefore I do not have auto insurance. When Surly McRepresentative 'assisted' me, he said he wanted to see my airline ticket. When I said I was local to the area, he said he would need to see my automobile insurance policy. When I told him I didn't have an auto policy, he told me I couldn't rent from Advantage. Their counter was empty compared to the other counters that had at least several people. There was truly no advantage to renting with Advantage and that meant I had to scramble at the 11th hour to get another rental with another company at a reasonable rate.Reviewed 28 Nov. 2016

ScamPros:The Charger is a fun car to drive.Cons:Read the fine print--Advantage seems to be running some sort of a new scam. Advantage now requires proof of collision insurance if you live within 65 miles of the Newark Airport rental car facility. If you can't show proof of collision coverage, they won't rent to you. I have a liability insurance policy and colllision coverage through my Visa card, but they still would not rent to me. My girlfriend (who has a drivers license from another state) ended up having to rent the car, or we would have been stuck without a car on Thanksgiving weekend. They claimed the new collision policy was clearly stated, but it was on a scrap of paper with tiny print taped to the BACK of another sign at the rental counter. I saw two people with car reservations turned away because they could not show proof of collision coverage. Tha car also smelled like weed, but that was a separate issue.Reviewed 4 Dec. 2016

they won't rent to local rentersCons:I arrived at Newark Airport only to find that Advantage would not rent me a car. Buried deep in their terms and conditions (and it is deep - I went back to find it) is something that says local renters (those within 65 miles of the airport) can only rent a car if they come with a copy of their auto insurance policy. If I had a car of my own I wouldn't be renting from them! I'm not sure what issue this is addressing since it isn't required of non-local renters. if they don't want to rent to locals they should just say so. at the very least put this stupid condition front and center so you know what you are dealing with. Worst rental everCons:Customer service and rules are aweful. I reserved a car with this company cuz it was cheaper and spent 20$ for taxi to get ther but wasn't able to pick it up because have been told that I have to have my own insurance even can't buy it from them therefore didn't get qualified even tho there was no mention of it on confirmation. How can I have insurance or what am I going to do with that if don't have a car, that's why I'm renting it. Car was great, pick up and drop off were not.Pros:The car was clean and well maintained, drove great. The car however had a very strong chemical smell and that was very off putting.Cons:It took nearly an hour and 20 minutes to pick up the car, despite there being only 2 other customers ahead of me. The rental desk area wasn't clean, despite smelling heavily of the same chemical smell the car had. My flight was only 56 minutes, so to wait longer then that in a horrible smelling, cold and dirty hallway area was frustrating. The other companies down the row of counters had their acts together and were helping people quickly. If I hadn't already paid for the car up front I would have jumped lines, rented from another company and been on my way at least an hour earlier... poor customer service.Reviewed 5 Apr. 2018

They changed "policy" without notifying customers.Cons:They refused to give me a car since I didn't have my own car insurance. I'm a NYC resident without a car and thus no insurance. They said they have a new policy that local residents must have their own insurance. *I have never heard of this and rent at the EWR airport often(at least 1x every 8-10 weeks). They wouldn't even SELL me their own rip-off insurance policy! I argued with them but they wouldn't budge. This was Christmas Eve and most other rental agencies were sold out. I was able to find a car after talking to every agency in the area. 1. That "policy" is garbage. 2. If you have a new "policy" you need to notify your customers before arriving at the terminal. Misinformation from AdvantageCons:I reserved a car 2 weeks in advance, waiting in line for 30 mins and it was only when I got up to the counter that I was told Advantage would not be able to rent a car to me because I (1) didn't have a round trip flight from EWR Airport and (2) I didn't have my own car insurance (Geico, State Farm, etc...). To get this information at the last minute is totally unprofessional. I live in New York and don't own a car, thus I don't have my own insurance. It seems to be a policy specific to Advantage and I would have appreciated this information in BOLD before reserving with them. I walked down to another renter and secured a car no-problem - and at a cheaper price. Pros:They gave us a free upgrade since they ran out of small cars which was very nice. The vehicle was comfortable and very reliable. They loaded up our luggage into the car and we were on our way.Cons:The pick up process to a little longer than anticipated since I normally rent with avis. The drop off process was definitely the worst part. At Newark there are three companies that drop off at the same spot and the signage was not the best so we went to the wrong area first. Then when we got to the right area, a gentleman told me in a rather rude manner that I had to stay with my car so they can check for damage. I didn't really appreciate the assumption that there would be damage. All in all this company was ok, the customer service was not as professional as the larger companies.Reviewed 20 Oct. 2015
