This ridiculous airline and it's rude, obnoxious staff in Chengdu made a mockery of my friend and I (two 21 year old American girls traveling alone). We had booked round trip tickets back in October 2017 that included a 1 hour layover in Chengdu first, then a 7 hour layover in Shanghai on our way to Bangkok for a trip in Thailand. That was fine with us. Then all of a sudden it changed to a 6 hour layover in Chengdu then an 18 HOUR layover in Shanghai. We decided to deal with it and get a hotel room in Shanghai, no big deal. After a great trip in Thailand and leaving fine from Bangkok to our first layover in Chengdu, that is where the nightmare started. First off, going through Chengdu customs, I don't know if it is because Americans do not travel through there a lot, but the officers pulled us aside and were passing around our American passports around their staff, taking pictures of them with Iphones before handing us "in-transit" paperwork to fill out. As weird as that was, no one really seemed to speak english and we just wanted to get away from them and get through. When we went to the check in counter, they handed me a boarding pass for our flight at 1:50 that afternoon, but then proceeded to tell my friend that she wasn't on a flight until the next morning at 7 am out of Chengdu and our original connecting flight out of Shanghai at 11:50 the next morning was now at 8 pm for her. What could have been simply fixed like it WAS after calling priceline and our travel agent, the staff at the ticket counter and a representative over the phone made our lives living hell. They barely spoke english and the ones that did were very rude to us, saying that they couldn't help us and put us on the phone with China Eastern. FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF we were on the phone with a representative who was talking us in circles, telling us that there were no available seats on the 1:50 and that he could get her on the next 3:45 out of Chengdu, then put us on hold to come back and say he couldn't only change 1 domestic flight in China, but would have to cancel her flight to NY. When offering to pay to just DO IT and get out of china, he said that if he were to cancel it and take our credit card info, it "may or may not go through" and if it didn't she would be stuck with no flights. When asked how that made any sense, he proceeds to say" Because miss, our system sucks," and other rude things like "Why can't you just keep your flight and meet your friend in NY." then him along with a rude ticket counter guy say that he could help us if we took 5,000 yuan out of the bank and paid them cash. TRYING TO SCAM US. After all this drama a simple call to priceline was able to fix the problem no payment involved, and there WERE available seats on all the flights and a domestic flight could be changed. LYING, SCAMMING, RUDE, individuals. Definitely worth a little more money to take any other airline BUT THIS ONE.

Early arrival in Xiamen (5am) nothing open and no way to exchange money for taxi or food. Eventually found ATM that solved that problem. Wasn't dressed for or expecting the cold weather. Communications were a problem.

Nice wide seats, well run flight. Lots of food served, though very mixed quality. The unfortunate experiences described in the negatives of this review, do not repeat on the return flight.

In the fine print is the fact that the flight includes a stop in Shenzen. On the outbound flight this was a nightmare experience with Chinese immigration. Exhausted from a 14 hour flight, passengers had their passports taken away; were put through a bizarre 45 minute finger printing process using machines that did not work; and then left to wait for an hour or more with no information. The continuation flight was in another part of the airport - a very long walk; and it turned out not to be at the departing gate that was displayed on the monitors. We arrived at the indicated (wrong) gate with no guidance. Very nearly missed the continuation flight. Once in Xiamen, our arrival was late enough that the second floor of the airport was closed. There were no ATMs on the first floor; no way to get the Chinese cash needed to take a taxi to the airport. Fortunately a kind citizen agreed to exchange some cash, using mental calculations and sign language about the exchange rate.

I was very sick and contagious and asked for a single person hotel room for the night before a connecting flight. It was not accommodated. It would have cost extra 100-200 yuan. Then when we asked for the shuttle to the hotel, the security at the departures level meant we could not exit and be picked up. No one could arrange pick up at arrivals. Instead we paid for a taxi ourselves. Poor service and coordination, especially considering I could barely talk and just badly needed a rest.

The aircraft Hong Kong Airlies uses on this route is a joke. The business class is worse than economy class on other flights. Everything is dated, there is not much left of seat upholstering after 20 years without any updates and the headrest sits at a hight where my shoulder is - with no chance of adjusting it. I left the 5 hour flight with backpain and the resolution to NEVER AGAIN fly with Hong Kong Airlines.

The crew of this leg was very nice and spoke good English. Although, the boarding was delayed by about 30 minutes and the flight arrival was delayed the same, it wasn't a big deal since it was pretty comfortable throughout. China Airlines in-flight entertainment is great; lots of good options and new movies with a really good quality screen (better than most I've seen).

The food this time around was not that great. The flight attendant mentioned "pork noodle" or "curry pork". I chose the pork noodle, but would have chosen differently if I had known it was actually fried noodles (炒麵) instead of boiled noodles. Also, the hot buns were delayed so I didn't get it until I was finished everything. Thankfully I was too exhausted from my trip to care, and it tasted good nevertheless.

The return flight HK-Vancouver was on the slightly smaller and older Airbus 330 which had no chargers, no in-flight entertainment screen. We received iPad movie screens which were ok. Coach seats were too close compared to those on the LA-HK Airbus big boys (Airbus 350 9 abreast). Bonus negative was my seat was broken and wouldn't recline and there was a metal box underneath the seat in front of me so leg room was restrictive and I'm 6 feet tall. Shoulda sprung for Business Class. As for food, first meal was rice, kimchee, and a tiny bit of pork and veggies which was ok. Snack was pizza bread, really hard to eat/runny and served with no napkin. Breakfast was runny scrambled eggs, beans, and a cooked cherry tomato and single stalk of broccoli. Staff was polite. Worse yet was the Sunday morning line at Vancouver customs: at least 2500-3000 people from several flights and 4 (YOU READ THAT RIGHT: FOUR) customs agents! Took 2 hours and change to get through. Coming to the US through this airport I had to leave security, ticket for Portland leg, recheck my bag, go through security AGAIN, and GO THROUGH CUSTOMS TO THE US. Nice airport. The screens of my row were not working so they restarted all screens a few times. While the screens of my row worked, other rows were not working. Surprisingly no one fixed or complaint as the screens of other rows kept off from the start to the end of the flight. I felt so sorry for others.

Like what I said in "what I like", I think the connection of the screens/tablets had some issues. Luckily mine worked. I would be upset if my screen did not work during the entire 9 hours flight.

After all this drama a simple call to priceline was able to fix the problem no payment involved, and there WERE available seats on all the flights and a domestic flight could be changed. LYING, SCAMMING, RUDE, individuals. Definitely worth a little more money to take any other airline BUT THIS ONE.

Price and flight were great. Communicating was small problem. 5 am arrival nothing open so couldn't change money for food, taxi etc. Finally found an ATM that worked. People used their cell phones to try and communicate.

I liked the price of the trip and free hotel for long transit time.

The only issue with CEA was checking in and boarding. It was brutal coming out of Bangkok. I’m not sure if this is the fault of CEA or Bangkok Airport.

DO NOT TAKE THIS FLIGHT THROUGH VANCOUVER TO TRAVEL BACK TO THE STATES! Worst international travel experience of my life, bar none.

Eveyone was syper friendly and the food was decent. They were very good about allowing me to change seats to an open seat once the doors were closed.

The selection of movies to watch was not ver good. They had a few (10-15) choices for a few genre but over all there were obly 1 or 2 decent movies per genre.

When offering drinks, the steward didn't give passengers enough time to make their selection. Offerred snack in the dark when most people were asleep. Understand that the attendants are trying to carry their tasks in a specific time frame but there must be a better way to serve your customers, such as announcing that snack can be brought to you upon your request.

there was absolutely no room to even lay down your arm beside you. This was for the flight segment from Taiwan To Vancouver. An almost 11 hour flight. Narrow tight seat I would never ride EVA air for this segment again. Terrible !
