FAQs - booking Scotland flights

  • What are some common layovers on the route from Ottawa to Scotland?

Common layover points when flying to Glasgow (GLA) include major European hubs like London Heathrow Airport (LHR) in the United Kingdom and Canadian airports such as Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Montreal Airport (YUL). If your destination is Edinburgh (EDI), you might have a layover in Toronto (YYZ), Newark (EWR) in the United States, or Zurich (ZRH) in Switzerland. The choice of layover airports will depend on the airline you fly with.

  • If I want to visit Loch Ness, which airport should I fly to?

To get to this mythical place in Scotland, the most direct option is to fly to Inverness Airport (INV), which is located about 35 km from Loch Ness. You can fly to this airport from Ottawa (YOW) making two layovers, one at Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and another at London Gatwick (LGW), to finally land in Inverness. If you are not interested in making so many stopovers, you can fly to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and rent a car at the airport itself. You can reach Loch Ness in about 3h 30min.

  • Do I need a visa to fly from Ottawa to Scotland?

Canadian citizens traveling to Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom, typically do not require a visa for short stays (up to six months) for tourism. However, a valid passport is necessary. As with all international travel, visa requirements can change, so it's important to check the most current information before your trip.

  • How can I make my flight from Ottawa to Scotland more sustainable?

To make your journey more sustainable, choose airlines known for their environmental commitments. For instance, airlines like British Airways have initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, including operating newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft and offering passengers the opportunity to offset their flight's carbon footprint. Booking the most direct flight possible can also reduce fuel consumption associated with layovers.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Ottawa to Scotland?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Ottawa to Scotland.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Ottawa to Scotland?

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Ottawa to Scotland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Scotland with an airline and back to Ottawa with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Ottawa to Scotland?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Scotland from Ottawa up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Scotland

  • Morning departure is around 11% more expensive than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Your international journey from Ottawa to Scotland will start at Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (YOW). Direct flights to Scotland are not common, so you will typically have connecting flights, often through major European hubs or Canadian airports like Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
  • Scotland's two main international airports are Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and Glasgow Airport (GLA). Choose your arrival airport based on your destination and itinerary in Scotland. Edinburgh is ideal for exploring the east and the Scottish Highlands, while Glasgow is a gateway to the west and the southern parts of Scotland.
  • Air Canada, British Airways, and KLM are among the airlines that operate flights from Ottawa to Scotland, usually with a stopover. These airlines offer various options in terms of flight times and prices, allowing some flexibility in planning your trip.
  • Utilize the amenities at your layover airports. Airports like London Heathrow (LHR) or Toronto Pearson (YYZ) offer numerous dining, shopping, and relaxation options to make your layover more enjoyable and comfortable. Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounge at Toronto Pearson can be a great place to relax, in Terminal 1.
  • Given the duration of the flight and the potential for layovers, upgrading your seat for additional comfort can be a wise investment. Airlines such as British Airways often offer the opportunity for last-minute upgrades to premium classes at a reduced cost compared to the original price. This upgrade can provide additional legroom, priority boarding, better in-flight meals, and an overall more relaxed travel experience.

The check in was horrible. I stood in line for 1 hour to check in with an Air France ticket. Then I was told I had to go to Delta counter onstead to check in instead. It made no sense.

Old cabine without flat bed in business for a 12 hour flight is not acceptable

Medíocre. The food wasn't good (although not bad, bad) and the staff wasn't kind. I asked for n extra blanket, the steward never came back, serving us roughly.

Generally good. The crew is excellent. The food could be better.

Excellent apart from transport to actual plane 10 minutes from the actual gate , walking out in the tarmac in the rain and having to climb stairs to enter while holding luggage.

They wanted to close counter although they did not provide the wheelchair requested which ended by going alone to transit security and lost long time and they did not want to wait .

Food could have been better especially the breakfast. Overall it was a good flight

I have used Air France and KLM many times it will help if they change their menu's feel like it's been the same for years!!!, Especially the breakfast. Overall the flight was good and enjoyable.

A couple of minor delays in boarding but very professional and efficient staff.

Crew was professional. Boarding has few seats . Since the plane was not full would have been nice to change seat on the internet

Too many oversized carryon baggage. If carrier reduced checked luggage fee this could be avoided. The staff were friendly and helpful, very professional.

Nice smooth flight with pleasant stewards. Slept most of the flight, they could have slowly turned on the lights to make it more pleasant. Otherwise a good trip.

Great! No food was available during the flight due to the catering service strike but snacks were given throughout the flight which was nice.

I wish that seats closer to the front of the plan were available, but when I booked the flight the seats were VERY expensive so I did not book seats at that time. The day before flying only seats at the back of the plane were available. It takes so long to board the plane and empty the plane on arrival due to SO many roller bags.

Crew was rude.didn’t even say hi or welcome to board

Nothing special. Unacceptable wait for baggage on arriving in Calgary

Departure delay on a late night flight. Made us even later. Tired but got home.

Westjet forced me to put my carry-on baggage in check-in probably because I was assigned seat 23A (the last row seat), which had no cabin space, which is unfair. I wanted to carry on my luggage so that I don't have to wait at the airport for my luggage. Also, because there was no cabin space, I was forced to keep my laptop bag under the seat, which I didn't want to as I was carrying 2 laptops and charger. The airline should basically tell people that if you are assigned a last row seat, then you are not allowed a cabin baggage or a personal item.

Easy processing, flight time was quick and staff was professional and kind.

It was delayed by two ours very full no room to move

It was good! Appreciated that it was very on schedule so it made the connecting flight less stressful

Two flights, both poor. No entertainment. Cramped and uncomfortable seats, little space, the rest was OK. Staff were acceptable good.

The crew was doing their best on an old plane needing updating. Chairs that creaked and wouldn’t stay in position. My tray table was unusable as was on-board entertainment due the audio needing usb earphones (that were not provided). Prior to boarding in Toronto and despite being scheduled for a wheelchair and assistance, we were dropped off by clubcar without a wheelchair which I found myself by a gate. Due to no boarding gate assigned at that time we waited and when it was, it subsequently was moved from 64 to 95. No help could be found so I pushed my husband’s chair to that furthest gate in the airport at the highest speed possible for a 73 year old. And by that I mean I ran. It was a very stressful experience.

Wifi wasn't working on one of the UA flights after boarding.

Leg room was lacking. Legs crammed into seat in front.

T hey did a great job. Flight was on time .

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

The Polaris experience is top notch. From departure lounge to arrival lounge. Everything was top notch. One of the best first class experience

Crew was not very helpful. They forgot to serve me coffee and had to wait for a long time.It looked as if they were not very happy with what they were doing.

EWR terminal C United Club is great. Flight and everything else mediocre

Limited snack options cause the snack vendor was on strike

The 6 hour delay with minimal updates was not handled well. After many complaints from most of the un-boarded passengers, food vouchers were offered. The catering strike meant there was no food or snacks on the plane. Beverage service was heavily impacted, only water or juice was available. The staff at the gate was kind enough to inform that "if you want to eat on the plane, you will need to bring it on when boarding".

It was an excellent experience, traveling from Toronto to Denver with United.

Ontime boarding. Almost 1 hour take off delay. We could have boarded slightly later since the pilots were in traffic

I go am isle seat because it was half empty Food strike no food available

Flight was delayed, jeopardizing the following connections. Food was terrible. Crew was great.

This was the first AC flight in a long time that we experienced no delays or frustrations. The gate attendant was extremely polite and accommodating to my husband who has Parkinson’s disease which made boarding extremely stress free. Flight departed ON TIME and was a smooth ride. If only all my AC experiences could be like this.

Great experience on this Air Canada flight. Everyone was polite and respectful, even the passengers are very polite.

My wife and I especially liked the fact that the Toronto agent went beyond expectation to allow my wife and I to sit together. There was no option for us when we booked our seats. Very thankful!

I didn’t like the fact that all the customs officers went to lunch so I was in line for 90 minutes due to where the staff directed me. We were told three very different reasons for why the plane was delayed. It was a crowded plane with difficult storage situations for the Carry On bags. The Air Canada airline staff were all very good and professional. I was so disappointed in my cheese and fruit box as the cheese had molded and the fruit wasn’t fresh so I couldn’t eat the majority of the food. This was the last meal I could find as the restaurants had closed when I got in to my destination. I think you could work on improving the food quality.

Another 35 min delay landing No apology no communication or acknowledgment about this

Try to humanize onboarding and take AI out. It's embarrassing and useless

no kiosks to check in with- it’s 2024!!! the flight was so hot and uncomfortable - not sure if that’s what caused a lady to faint during the flight but i was absolutely miserable.

Air Canada from Edmonton to Toronto was disappointing but Lufthansa from Toronto to Frankfurt was excellent.

Overall good experience. Polite crew. Good foodandentertainment. Seats are small and bit congested though.

I ended up buying (for $340) "extra space" seats because I my flying partner was given a STY boarding pass, leading me to conclude that she was on standby and that we had to buy seats on the flight. I later learned that the flight was not sold out and that we could have gotten on as usual. To be honest, I felt swindled.

I'm Canadian. I have the unfortunate experience of pretty not having the choice to fly with them. THEY ARE TERRIBLE.

The process overall was pretty seamless, and the crew were very friendly (especially Michael). Considering we booked expecting Lufthansa and the flight was operated by United, it was still a very good service and journey overall. The in-flight entertainment was great, with lots of quality options. One slight negative was that I had selected a vegetarian meal prior to flying, but received a vegan one. I think there should be more dietary options as it meant I missed out on some food that I would have preferred (and it seemed like the standard meals and snacks had a vegetarian option anyway). There was also a group of people who were moving around a lot and being generally disruptive at the quietest part of the flight, when the lights were off and most people were sleeping. I would have appreciated staff stepping in to encourage them to be mindful of others). Towards the end of the flight (which was very early in the morning in both time zones), the lights suddenly came on and breakfast was served. In my opinion, this was too early, and everyone was rudely awoken from sleep. After breakfast was cleared away, the lights went off again for about 45 minutes, allowing people to sleep some more. Then the lights came on again for landing. It seems like if they had served breakfast later, the lights on-lights off-lights on shenanigans could have been avoided, and people could have slept longer (and staff could have rested longer too).

You only get a chocolate square and small bottle of water.!

to be bussed around the airport, then have to sit on the plane for an hour whilst the plane was deiced not once, but twice, then to have to wait for a tug driver is unacceptable. The Captain was very good at communicating.
