Your guide to booking Ixtapa flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Ixtapa, aim to book around 10 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 30% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Ixtapa, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to land around C$ 760 round-trip. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a strong deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, aim to travel to Ixtapa in April. Round-trip fares historically average C$ 754 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond an ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to noon to save up to C$ 156 per round-trip. Noon flights to Ixtapa average C$ 954 compared to C$ 1,110 for morning flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • Bag allowances vary by airline, fare type, cabin class, and route. On flights to Ixtapa, some airlines may include bags at no extra cost. For example, Air Canada includes a carry-on bag and a checked bag in Economy Class, while WestJet includes a carry-on bag and a checked bag in Economy Class. Always check the fare details before booking, since bag policies can change by ticket type.
  • The Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) welcomes international flights to Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, two of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, known for their beaches and resorts on the Pacific Coast.
  • Several airlines operate seasonal flights to Ixtapa from Canada, including Air Canada (from Toronto-Pearson and Vancouver), Air Canada Rouge (from Montreal-Trudeau), Sunwing Airlines (from Edmonton, Montreal-Trudeau, Regina, Saskatoon, Toronto-Pearson, Winnipeg and Vancouver), and WestJet (from Calgary).
  • After baggage claim, you may be approached by individuals eager to offer you assistance or free transportation to the city centre. Travellers should note that these are usually sales people pitching time-share deals, not airport employees.
  • Taking a taxi is the easiest way to travel from the airport to Ixtapa city centre. Enlaces Terrestres Aeropuerto is the only official taxi company allowed to pick up passengers at the airport. You can arrange for transportation at their customer service counter outside the arrivals area. Fares to Ixtapa zone 1, the central hotel zone, range from 160 MXN (approximately 11 CAD) per person in a shared shuttle to 600 MXN (about 42 CAD) total in a private taxi for up to three passengers.
  • At the airport most businesses including taxis accept credit card payment, so you can wait until you reach the city centre to exchange cash and get better rates, instead of using one of the services in the arrivals area.

At my original departure Istanbul I was told my seat and flight was cancelled from the 3rd party. I had no seat to get to my other flights .. they charged me $481 USD to board the flight that I already paid for

All went very well. We used the AIFI Airport, such a lovely facility. Definitely needs better transportation options to get there.

Both ground crew and flight crew were rude, and did not provide any level of service. They made it very difficult as we were traveling with a passenger the required assistance.

From the check-in, to the flight, and arriving, everything went very smoothly. Unfortunately, when I received my baggage it was severely damaged. I have a hard shelled suitcase and it was completely smashed it. I’m not sure how this could happened but I am extremely disappointed that my belongings were damaged beyond repair and continued use.

Really nice, all good, nice crew and all on time

Unfortunately I had an awful boarding experience. Our first flight with Aeromexico was fine and landed on time however it couldn’t find a gate and we were late which made us lose our connecting flight with Aeromexico. The staff handled it horribly when we explained our situation and would not led us board when we missed the boarding time by a couple minutes. The staff were extremely rude and did not attempt to even help us. Because of this incident, my husband and I missed a full day of work which negatively impacted our salary which we need. Please compensate us for the work that we missed.

It was OK. The flight is pretty long for the airlines to only offer a simple sandwich on business class. The entertainment is similar to that on other Skyteam members. Ultimately the airline lost my bag and didn’t deliver it to me until the next day after a lengthy lost baggage report.

Aeroméxico cancelled my ticket without advice AND It make a last minute mess in my intinerary, no solving my situation, bad advice and bad customer service

The ground staff were not as friendly and nice to the passengers as the air crew. Flight attendants, cockpit crew were great and very nice to everyone on board.

My flight was delayed, then I got transferred to a new flight that was also delayed- which wasn’t Aeromexico’s fault, it was because of weather conditions. Most of the crew was very nice and patient, except for one or two flight attendants who were rude. The entertainment wasn’t on, so all the screens were off.

It was partially ok .. not anything like from Orlando to Houston... first the flight attendant was not so nice and insisted on have a small backpack down when really was not to put in danger anyone, also the beverages they were not so good... not big chance to select other tea.. the seat was partially ok could not have those flips to hold your head.. and finally when it land off in Guadalajara, it was raining and the flight was going to the main area then go back and drop us out of nowhere with the rain.

I needed internet for critical matters and it never worked.

No seat back entertainment. And app had a hard time getting entertainment loaded.

It was great with United overall except for two things. 1) It was a 5-hour flight and we were with kids, so we were asking for extra snacks. They were extremely reticent to dole them out even though there wasn't any meal and the kids were starting to hit their limit towards the end. 2) Baggage didn't arrive until 80 minutes after we landed.

Seats had less pitch than a regional jet. Food was OK. Have to buy alcohol on US based carriers flying international. Boarding was a mess. Did not have bags but overhead space was gone quick. Would like to see the airlines enforce the one bag over and one bag under policy

Great smooth flight. Had a seating change, but that was an improvement. Thanks United Airways Crew.

We had to deboard 2 times due to maintenance issues. They changed the plane, and then we got deviated to LAX due to maibtenance issues on the other plane, had to sleep at LAX and los a full day.

Staff was rude. Didn’t give water for 2 hours. Worst service

Breakfast was not loaded at SFO due to catering company change. Seems like a major airline at a major hub would have thought of something else or warned passengers to pick up food before boarding a 3 hour flight.

They switched out gate from terminal 1 to terminal two ten minutes before boarding. So we had to make a 20 min crazy fast walk to a different terminal. Then we boarded the plane and waited for over 40 minutes until push back. Brutal

The pricing was split into an ultra basic fare with a comfort seat upgrade. This is misleading. Never were we shown an ultra basic fare. What this did because the fare category was ultra basic we could not bid on an upgrade first class seat. All e mails from WestJet were for ultra basic category with my wife and I upset as we could not confirm this with anyone from your firm. The check in counter were not going to allow our carry on but after some checking saw we had ultra basic and a comfort seat upgrade. They could not figure out how this was done. Now we have to go through this again at the gate in Mexico. Unless I missed it - please let customers know the billing in future. Respectfully. Gary & Nancy Moughtin

As someone who never flies WestJet unless there is no other viable option I have to give this crew credit where credit is due. Extremely well done everyone.

Everything was great until we had to get our bags. The bags came out in several different batches over 90 minutes after we landed maybe more we got our bags. So much for the old West Jet where they promised bags in 20 minutes. I Next time I will pack lighter and go with a carry-on.

Great seats, super comfortable, but no in flight entertainment which was a let down

Food good . No entertainment. Need to use wifi to access your own apps. Eg Amazon Prime, YouTube. They don't tell you unless you ask.

The flight attendants were great, but not much room while sitting and it would be nice to get free movies.

Single flights to Cancun purchased through third-party, initially had issues printing luggage labels with the lady at the airport Pearson… Was super friendly and assisted quickly despite being very busy

Early flight was great. Naps, movie and into Mexico with time left in the first day.

Require more comfortable seats. More frequent water/beverage service. I would like better food choices. Overall, very mediocre. I now only fly WestJet when there are no other schedule options - no longer my first choice.

we were upgraded to business class, not sure why, so the flight exceeded our expectations. Perhaps this was because the flight Cancun to Calgary was a nightmare , not even guaranteed a seat upon checkin at the airport.

They are offering less and less for more and more. They changed our seat that we paid extra to select at the last minute. The seats are way too narrow and my elbows went numb.

Business Class was great with two exceptions: they should board Business Class Only first, then loyalty, then handicapped and families with young children then by zone. With all the loyalty and credit card holders and families with kids, dozens boarded before us and we were in row 3. My only other compliant with Air Canada is they don’t serve drinks and snacks in business class until at a cruising altitude. Transat and Emirates serve prior to takeoff which is especially nice during boarding of big planes and de-icing.

I explained this tragedy already with Jazz It was terrible starting with Jazz delayed 3 times so that I missed my direct flight to Mexico City and the only option was a 19 hour trip to Toronto and then down to Mexico City I was delayed by a day I had to sleep in tbe Airport on a hard bench I was given vouchers which were not honored I had no place to eat until 0545 and then catch my flight which was boarding I went to the AC counter to c/o and that was to no avail I then had the experience of my suitcase being lost and no clothes gor 2 days

No entertainment system. Paid extra for wider seats but not worth the cost. Flight left a little late and arrived early.

Seats were so small. I’m 6ft and a good 20% of me hung out into the aisle and the flight attendants come dashing with the cart. On multiple occasions they hit me before saying mind your elbows and knees. I’m like, yes, but where do i put them. There isn’t a space that exists that i can fold into. The carts are so close to the seats when they pass through that i regularly felt water dripping on me as they poured drinks. Overall 3/10 experience. Highly unlikely to recommend

Would have preferred a better food menu. Other than that, no complaints.

Flight delayed by 90 min making for a 2 am check in at destination hotel.

Flight left on time. Crew was polite and helpful. Flight arrived early at destination. Had some trouble with in-flight entertainment system (not built in to seat-back) but found a work-around. Good experience.

Air Canada business class used to be among the best among North American airlines, however it has gone downhill since the last time I flew with them. They didn't even offer any drinks prior to takeoff despite having over 30 minutes on the ground for boarding and de-icing. Once we got in the air the service was fine, however the food was lukewarm at best and just okay. The warm bread and spring mix salad was very good at least. My main complaint is they were letting economy guests use our washroom. Presumably because the Max 8 only has one in the rear. However as I was sitting in row 1 I constantly had passengers waiting in line for the toilet.

Breakfast sandwich option sold out by row 30 One flight attendant not very amicable (spoke to a few people about her)
