Your guide to booking Kathmandu flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Kathmandu, aim to book around 20 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 12% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Kathmandu, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to land around C$ 1,668 round-trip. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a strong deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, aim to travel to Kathmandu in January. Round-trip fares historically average C$ 1,764 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond an ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to afternoon to save up to C$ 348 per round-trip. Afternoon flights to Kathmandu average C$ 1,830 compared to C$ 2,178 for noon flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • All international flights to Kathmandu land at the Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). In the heart of Kathmandu Valley, this airport has two terminals for international and domestic flights, and one terminal for VIP passengers.
  • Tribhuvan International Airport services two cities in addition to Kathmandu, both worth visiting. Bhaktapur is 25 minutes away by car and is known for its architectural richness, and Patan, about 17 minutes away by car, isone of Nepal’s three royal cities and is also known as Lalitpur.
  • If after your long flight to Kathmandu you are feeling under the weather, Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) and Norvic International Hospital are both available to provide medical assistance directly at the airport.
  • The currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR) and, although you’ll find many ATMs at the airport and in Kathmandu, it’s best to exchange currency at one of the two offices in the arrivals lounge, where rates are more favourable than the ATMs.
  • Bus stops are located quite far from the airport, don’t follow a set schedule and are often crowded. Getting a taxi from the airport is the best transportation option. You can choose one of the taxis outside the airport, where negotiable fares start from Rs 400 (C$ 5), but if you’re not comfortable with haggling, order a pre-paid taxi from one of the offices in the arrivals area. Rates are fixed and a taxi ride from the airport to the city center will cost an average of Rs 800 (C$ 9.50).
  • Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is the only international airport in Nepal. It is located in Kathmandu, about 5 km from downtown. The airport serves major cities in Nepal, India, China, Thailand, and Malaysia.
  • The KTM airport has two pet relief areas outside the terminal building, on either side of the main entrance. Both sites have grassy patches and plastic bags for pet waste. There are also benches for passengers to sit with their pets.
  • KTM Airport is the central hub and base for Nepal Airlines. Some of the most frequented destinations from KTM Airport include Delhi in India, Bangkok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Shanghai in China. Other goals include Hong Kong, Dubai, and Riyadh.

Timeliness seems to be optional. Flight was 30 min late despite not coming from anywhere else prior. Information on flight status boards in the airport continued to show “on time” despite being passed the time it should have left.

Super flight. On time departure and arrival. Very good service. Luggage arrival at DXB was a little delayed but you can’t have everything the very best :)

Over - amazing. The aircraft is somewhat old on this route.

Good flight overall. Good options of food on NY-Dubai-Mumbai leg. Not that good reversing back. The flight crew is courteous and professional as always. The seating was much more comfortable going into Mumbai than coming back. Cheers!

The plane seemed pretty old and the food was not good

Amazing and great experience, crew was available and took great care of my parents. Food was nice and so was the service. Aircraft from Dubai to Mumbai was not so great and was a big showdown of the aircraft service

The food was amazing on our flight. So many options for movies and shows to stay entertained for 12 hours.

I was not allowed to upgrade with miles whereas others were. That’s a pity

Everything was good but I think food choices could've been better

No entertainment u less you pay. Wish there were some free movies

Cathay has always been great. Even allowed some leniency on my baggage weight. I believe they are also on the more leg room side of airlines.

Missed our flight with Cathay due to late Westjet plane and chaotic Toronto airport. Had to clear customs get bags and re check bags in an hour. Did not make it got lost not clear signage with bag drop off. West jet only allowed 1 checked bag for this international fluid. Cathay checked my second bag for free.

Everything and everyone were excellent except for the charge for using WiFi; there was no escape from this fee except to not use it.

Boarding on any airline is a hot mess. Load your pivilaged passengers, then back to front. Back to front.

The flight experience was good for a long flight over the pole, but it got my wife to the Far East in time.

Problems with entertainment system eventually rectified. Cabin crew attentive and polite but a bit absent minded when it came to remembering requests, salt, sugar etc.

We flew economy light. We did not want to check bags and we had free 1 bag, but just had back packs with small personal item. Try as we may could only get bags down to 17lbs each. So we put 2 lbs from one bag into other and checked it. I think if someone has a checked bag allowance and chose not to use it , it would benefit both parties to bump carry on weight up to the next level of 22lbs or 10kgs. Just a thought.

Trip was fine. My only complaint was that when the passenger in front of me reclined her seat (which was, in essence, the whole flight except landing and take-off,) it was uncomfortably claustrophobic for me and very difficult for my husband to get in and out of his window seat. Also uncomfortable to watch the entertainment because the screen was right in your face.

Very friendly and accommodating staff. Food was great. Lots of movies and tv shows to choose from. Highly recommend.

The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food was great. Lots of movies to choose from as well as tv shows. Highly recommend.

I wish I knew in advance that the connecting flight was by indigo air

I appreciated the vailability of wheelchair services for persons with mobility issues all the way up to the aircraft. What could be better would be the food choices.

Plane was good Crew was good Food was just ok Could have had more entertainment options But overall good

Awesome hospitality, awesome staff, awesome food & awesome travel time. Thanks

My baggage is lost. Flight cancelled, Rebooked ticket through long routes. Mental stress, emotional hurt

The American/Hollywood movies in the entertainment system lack english subtitles, they tend to have only arabic subtitles. Coupled with the low quality airplane earphones and cabin noise, it sometimes is difficult to follow the movie dialogues.

I liked the food and services provided. I think the seating should be updated cause it’s to congested for economic class.

Nothing I knew what I was getting into ; no complaints when on string budget

Very tight seating. Crew seemed too dis interested and too slow to remove main meal trays.

Didn't have internet connection, and the flight was over booked.

If Biman doesn't improve its service. they will lose business.

The food quality could have been a little better. Not sure if the flight was late due to weather but that was another thing. Overall it was a good experience.

It was ok. I wish if they could maintain the time.

Internal air serrulation was poor, felt suffocated after a while. Food was horrible. Seats were not comfortable at all, no leg or arm stretch room at all, even though I am not a big person at all. Dhaka transit passengers' waiting area was also horrible, dirty and unfriendly service. Middle of the journey opening previously checked in baggage was extremely unpleasant experience. I never experienced anything like this before in my 30+ years airplane journey experience.

I like food, look for extra meals or foods please

Late Biman. I will never ever go with Biman again.

There was a lot of kindness on the part of the crew. There was a strong smell throughout the plane.

I paid $110 for a seat located at the start of a section and therefor would not have a chair in front of it, but this is not what I received. The floor plan was different from when I booked my ticket. This is very disappointing and my money needs to be returned.

Very poor experience. The entertainment screen wasn't working, charging USB was not working. There was a water leak on my head from air conditioning. The tray table was cracked. seats were old and dirty.

Bad weather in Amritsar cancelled the flight while we were at the gate in Delhi but the ground crew took good care of us and exceeded our expectations. Once on the plane, we enjoyed the best experience we’ve had on any flight in years. Their customer support was also impressively quick to answer and immediately helpful.

Very old and ill maintained flights. Seats didn’t have proper cushioning. The entertainment system was a joke. That’s the least one can expect from a 19 hour long flight.

Poor entertainment. Charging station was broken, not clean washrooms, 6hrs delay , no apologies given

Business class recliners and entertainment system was not working, it essentially became economy travel at the cost of business

Planes are very old and dated, entertainment doesn't work at all, food was below average. Flight was on time and seats have better leg space than competition.

The tv didn’t work and the seats were too small

Broken food table, broken entertainment system, broken remote. Cracks on seat plastics here and there.

Flight got delayed by 3 hours but no compensation or anything
