Flights from North America to British Columbia: the best tips from KAYAK users

The air Canada flight made people surrender their carry ons to be checked. Just like 10 people since the flight was so full. The amount of luggage people carry is insane but air Canada did a great job to incentives people to check there extra baggage

I have been pleasantly surprised by Air Canada as of late. My last two trips have been with them. I appreciate the monitor still being in the seats so Im not messing around with an app that most often doesn't work. The flight crew was excellent and very helpful.
SarahFlew with Air CanadaYCD-YVRDec 2024
Nanaimo airport is awesome. So small and friendly. Easy to fill up your water bottle and have your snack sitting looking out the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. And, due to my peri-menopausal overheating, I actually appreciate the outside winter walk to board the plane.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-YVRFeb 2025
Given that AirCanada charges extra for every additional thing from checking bags to seat selection there are discount airlines that do the job and have significantly less delays and cancellations ...Flair Air for example ... easily 70 % less ticket price
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYVR-YKAJan 2025
Taking the Skytrain into/out of YVR is useful. Coming in from the train there is a Security entry just to the right that is usually a shorter line and thus faster.
SallyFlew with WestJetHNL-YVRFeb 2025
Try to find a flight that gets to arriving in the day instead of late at night. It’s a waste of one night hotel which is very expensive now.

- Try to bring as little luggage as possible. Nowadays ALL airlines charge you for bringing basically anything other than a little purse/laptop/small backpack! It is getting ridiculous! - Bring food, because all airlines charge an obscene amount of money for a sandwich and/or a pop. - Come early. The airline (or the the airport) might have to change the gate, so there could be some running around.

Don’t wait to the last hour to get to LAX for your flight. Traffic is heavy in and out of LAX and it will take at least an hour to checkin and clear security. Be there at least 2 hours pre-flight.

There is a train but Rocky Mountaineer is expensive. There’s also E-bus but we would have had to stay overnight. Westjet is much cheaper but flights are through Calgary taking over 4 hours to make it to Kamloops instead of the 50 minute flight with AC.

If you think you’ll be hungry, bring food on board or eat before boarding. Don’t pay extra for a premium seat unless you want to sit toward the front of the plane. The seats are not different from one section to another. The bathroom smelled and was tight.

People should go to airport at least 90 minutes before the boarding. The security check in the Montreal airport is slow and the lines are long. We were only in the domestic flights terminal. There are a lot of cafe you can buy food after security check, but very limited number of shops there. The lounge in the Montreal airport for domestic flights - business class serves hot breakfast, which is good, but nothing special. We received our suitcases in Vancouver very fast and even faster got on taxi. Great job.
NicoFlew with Air CanadaSEA-YVRMay 2024
SeaTac airport is not the best. We were again treated like cattle going through security and the facilities through security are old and there is not enough space. The staff was friendly though, despite the circumstances. YVR was glorious again. Big open beautiful spaces. Super friendly staff. Modern technology.

The Newark international airport was a breeze! Through bag check and to my gate in less than 10min! Make sure you bring your own food onto the plane, otherwise you are stuck buying from their bistro menu. Food vendors seem quite limited at the terminal.

BC Ferries is cheapest option (walk-on is quite inexpensive) if you have the time. Harbour Air and Pacific Coastal Airlines (YVR South Terminal) often have great sales. Helijet, even on sale, will likely be most expensive. But, Helijet is harbour to harbour (like Harbour Air), and can fly in the dark and in somewhat bad weather (Harbour Air can only fly during daylight).

I love the 2 seats per row. More room. The crew were excellent.

It was amazing although they did bump us up to the front which gave us more leg room and a meal. The service was great! The staff were friendly. :)

Overall very good... staff were friendly and helpful. boarding was good for the most part, but a little hard to get our carry-on bags on there.... I think people should be directed to keep their coats and small bags with them until all the carry-ons are loaded, and then, if there is space, they can put their small bags and coats up top.. makes it much easier to put baggage up. i loved the internet feature, but the entertainment was not there unless you have your own Netflix or similar platform. My chair did not recline, which was very annoying, and the arms won't go up near the isle, which makes it tough to get in and out of the seat.

Staff were excellant. Only snacks served. Some turbulence so we were offered Free beer or wine.

The staff is always great. Just the fact that our flight was the only one delayed from Halifax when all other carries were still flying. It happen a year ago out of Toronto as well. All others were flying but our flight got cancelled 1 hr before the time of departure.

The only issue had when i mentioned about comfort was the man beside me was on the larger side and took about 1/3 of my seat where i was pressed against the wall/window of the plane for the trip.

The check-in staff, boarding staff, and flight crew were all very friendly. Really miss the Porter lounge in Ottawa.

Thanks for giving a beer to everyone in the seat infront of me and then telling me that I can’t have one because they are going to land. I guess I need to pay for a seat and then pick one in the very front of the plane

The flight was delayed by more than one hour. The terminal was consequently overcrowded and hot. We lost our car reservation and hit rush hour traffic in Boston, which added two hours stuck in traffic to our trip.

Awesome, the whole way through. Thank you, this is the new Canadian Airline benchmark.

My husband required a wheelchair to get to the airplane and the service he received was exemplary. Thank you.

WestJet was able to re-book us to the next available flight at no charge when air traffic controller staffing shortage delayed our inbound flight

Plane changed to one with no entertainment system or ability to serve hot meals

I am a tall woman and could not move my legs enough to reach down under the seat in front of me to retrieve anything I put down there. I sat in both aisle and window seats and felt extremely cramped. In the aisle seat, if the stewardess was heavy, it was impossible to pass, and she would knock my arm shoulder and thigh every time she went by. If I can avoid it, I will not be flying this airline again.

We never had an experience they canceled the flight and they did not offer us an alternative flight. I had to book one on my own expense. They offered us food voucher and we could not use them at the airport it kept saying not attached to an existing flight. The people at the counter were rude and cold and they did not care about our situation

Get our, as a group, skis on time to their destination. Have more attendants checking people in. There was only one. The line was a block long :( . Also flight change with 5-hour delay

First flight out in the morning is often the best chance of running on time. Not in this case, which unfortunately is now what passengers can expect as what is common. - If you are late for a flight, too bad for you. - If West Jet is late, too bad for you. - Bags don't make it? Too bad for you. - Flight change by 1+ days, too bad for you Prices continue to increase, while customer service nosedives. This is backwards and in any other develop country would be considered unacceptable - except for Canada. Too bad for us.

Horrible. I checked out myself that it seems that I can have a free carry-on. But they ask me to pay $75 when we are nearly boarding. It was tricky during check out that make you mistake that you can have a carry-on beside your personal item. Also they ask $75 in the airport instead of $35 during checkout. So the whole process is designed to make you this mistake

Westjet has been absolutely terrible! Flights continually cancelled. Took 4 days to get home. Would have been 5, but we booked last flight with another airline after our Westjet flight was cancelled. Even pilot on original flight looked frustrated! Funny how they say cancelation is weather related, but they still have more than 1 other flight leaving to same destination on same day, but of course those are all full. This happened more than once on this trip. Two weather related cancelations and 1 mechanical. Not sure if the last flight even went ahead. Felt so sorry for families with kids and babies, and the older travellers. Felt like we lived out of suitcases and airports for days - SO RIDICULOUS! Next to no help from Westjet staff at airports, but it appears there is nothing they can help you with. Westjet has made it that they are unreachable when you need them! People were getting extremely frustrated, and rightfully so. Additional costs to us really added up, but Westjet literally DOESN'T CARE! Final straw was when we had to pay $1280 on a different airline (economy) trying to get home after another cancelled flight. Westjet will be refunding us a whole $140! Can't believe how this airline operates. We will never, ever use them again!

The only thing I didn’t like was how far away the gate was. I would have requested a wheelchair had I known.

As usual, terrible. Delayed flight, missed connection and wasted hours at the airport. The only reason I use this airline is because of limited options.

All was good except for the seats, not very comfy.

Very nice. Cabin crew is very attentive and professional. So nice!

Not allowing food choice through app. Very hard to find,

Poor air traffic controller staffing led to a 50%reduction on flights so we got to wait 4 hrs for our flight! Very disorganized at the gate Poor communication with customers

It was delayed by almost 90 minutes and that messed up our plans but it was beyond UA’s control that is what we heard

No pillow, blanket, or complimentary food provided on 5 hour flight

It was what it was. The crew were very supportive of my wife's inability to sit for long (without severe pain). I say the food was excellent because we bought sushi at Bento, pre flite. We did not complete the final leg (YVR to YYJ) as we were able to catch the last ferry to Swartz Bay. Thanks to Air Canada ( crew and network ) for the connections to/from SJO.

Flight and flight crew were great. Better than most US airlines. Check-in was awful. They repeatedly wouldn't assign seats on the Air Canada flight or print boarding passes for all legs. This was really frustrating. Checked in the day before each direction but they put us on Standby while they juggled seats to upgrade others. This made it really difficult to get seats next to each other which is important when you have 10+ hour flights. Then they would only print boarding passes for their leg even though everything was booked through them. This made Customs in Canada difficult as they required boarding passes for the next flight each way to get through security. Couldn't get them on the phone and slowed everything down and security had to make exceptions for me to print boarding passes as security.

Not much....we did not get the complimentary beverages promised in our ticket. My partner and I did not have the window seats promised. We didnt get to sit together.....

Leg room was terrible and seats very narrow. Flight was also delayed.

The worst airline experience that I ever had in my life. The fare was cheap but boy do you pay for it when it comes to baggages, carry-ons, food on board and lack of available staff at check-in. Almost every other passenger on my flight had the same complaints and experience. We all bonded discussing our displeasure. My husband and I will definitely not be traveling with Flair Airlines. We'll take anyone else.

The most uncomfortable plane I ever fly on. The seats won't even recline a little. For a 5 hrs flight at night and tired it felt like torture

Seats in 1 res are dispersed all over the plane, even child was across

Personally, I will not use this fight again. The service is poor, you have to buy even water. They don't provide anything even sneak, you have to buy. They said Personally items for 7 kg. Then they use some measurements, if you have 7kg and if it's not getting inside of their measurements, you have to pay 80$ this is robbery. I will prefer other flight then this. I am désappointement taking this airplane.

It’s a shameful company. It ask as to go to counter to take the boarding pass, they simply send it by email, just to check the bags’ size in a smaller than normal template. DONT USE FLAIR! It will be more expensive than normal airlines at the end.

flight was okay, no wifi, no free drinks but worst of all they lost my son's bike for four days. Customer service was nonexistent - call a number that leaves you on perpetual hold, there's no baggage folks in the baggage claims area (in vancouver). we went up to international and nobody was at ticketing, went to domestic and they had us fill out a form. they could not tell us where the bag was. Anyway, highly recommend you drop an airtag for anything that's worth more than $500. My son's bike costs a lot more than that to replace; I was on pins and needles for four days.

The crew of this flight, specially the flight attendant in the front were the sweetest I’ve had in all my life, I genuinely hope they get a race or sum cuz of their efforts. It was just quite unsettling that the flight took so long to departure. It was supposed to leave at 10:35pm and we ended up taking off at 11:22pm…👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

It’s bare bones but was on time so can’t complain.

Of all the countries I've flown to and airlines from around the world, I have never had such a dismissive an arrogant employee during boarding. After waiting in line for 20 minutes to board, I was sent to a second line for Passport verification. Natalie from Flair, repeatedly tried to scan my passport which didn't work for some reason but was too lazy to input my information manually. Bar code scanners aren't 100% reliable as we all know. She asked me my birthdate 3 times, made me wait to be the last person aboard and then smugly threatened me that my only bag could be charged for (same backpack I used as on my arrival as carry on). Natalie working in Ft. Lauderdale and the was the epitome of lobotomized tiktok brain with the charm of junk mail.
