Pros:The service was excellent. They were very professional and helpful. Luckily we had read up on how car insurance works in Mexico before coming so we weren't caught off guard. We had some coverage from a United credit card. We had to print off the proof and bring it with us. This only covers the damage to the car. If you get in an accident and damage someone else's car and they need medical care, this coverage doesn't cover this so you need to purchase insurance for this. They also put a $800- $2500.00 USD hold on your credit card until the car is brought back. If you understand how this works it is so much easier! This website was very helpful for me to understand how car rentals work in MX. https://www.gettingstamped.com/renting-a-car-in-cancun-mexico/#is_it_safe_renting_car_cancunCons:The only thing I would suggest to these companies is when someone from the US or other companies has a rental, there is a document sent to them explaining how MX car rentals work. That would save the poor workers from having to try to explain this while the traveler is upset (which is how it was for the guy next to us that didn't read up on this before).Reviewed 23 Aug. 2020

Pros:The drop-off was fast and easy, but - ugh.Cons:First off, there is a law in Mexico, that says if your insurance doesn't explicitly cover liability IN MEXICO, then you need to purchase their insurance - at about $25/day. The insurance ended up costing double the rental! We rented every year in MX, from 2016-2019, and never had to buy that. They will not rent you the vehicle without it, and said that it is a FELONY to drive without this explicit Mexican liability insurance. Second off, the Nissan March was a jalopy. It had noises and rattles like you wouldn't believe. How could they let a car go out like that? We were embarrassed to give it to the valet at the resort. Fortunately, I know enough Spanish colorful metaphors to deflect the embarrassment.Reviewed 14 Mar. 2021

Terrible experiencePros:Checkout process was smoothCons:The car we rented was not available when we arrived, they sent us to the Tulum location (in a tiny SUV where the family hardly fit) and said a mini van would be waiting. We arrived in Tulum and noone there knew anything about our rental and no mini-van was available. Later the same evening a van showed up with 60k kilometers on it, beat up and sounded like the axle was about to fall off. When i returned the car i asked for a discount and they would only take off the price of the 3rd party insurance. Would never rent from them again.Reviewed 23 Feb. 2017

Pros:The car itself was fine.Cons:Totally ripped me off. The Kayak shown price was $21 for the weekend, INCLUDING taxes. That’s why I chose this reservation—even though it was a dinky little car, that was a fantastic sale price. When I arrived, there was mandatory insurance, a different rate, new taxes, and mandatory prepaid tank of gas, all resulting in a price of $175 for the weekend—almost 9 times more than I had planned to pay. By the time I was there it was too late to change to another company... no need to spend more hours of an already short weekend getaway shopping for rental cars. But this was totally deceptive and I’m very unhappy. Kayak should not be listing Alamo’s deceptive prices in the future.Reviewed 17 Dec. 2019

Pros:The Staff were kind but very overwhelmed.Cons:With Covid Restrictions, a surge of Travellers and Not as Many Cars Available that they made Reservations For, the Check in Process was slow and tedious, and Check Out was a NIGHTmare. No clear signage. Once you returned your car and had it inspected you then had to wait in no clear line, along with the people who were trying to Check In and Receive their Car, so that they can take final payment. Obviously for people needing to catch flights, this is a NIGHTMARE. I ended up having to scream "Retourno" multiple times til a lady materialised from out back and took my payment. She was then bombarded by other people also trying to return cars. There is NO system at ALL, and completely different to Rental Car Experience in the US or UK.Reviewed 16 Mar. 2021

Pros:Good: the staff was very helpful. The vehicle ran well. Drop off process was easy & quick. The shuttle drivers were helpful and courteous. The lady at the airport when we first arrived was very nice and very helpfulCons:NOT GOOD: They had the wrong vehicle for us. We specifically asked for a Jeep during the initial phone call rental arrangements, and were told that they would have one of three models available with no problem. The initial vehicle had obviously low air pressure in the front tires, and they have no ability to add air, or even check the air pressure, at the facility. The worst was the unexpected pricing. I will be filing a dispute claim with Alamo today because of the excessive charges that built up throughout the rental process, resulting in over $525.00 for a 4 day rental of a small Jeep. Unacceptable.Reviewed 2 Sep. 2017

Pros:...Cons:This rental agency requires you to add on insurance with no option. They said all agencies require it, which may be true and that’s fine but it was $200 for 6 days and our car reservation was only $250. The car was advertised at $11 per day through Hotwire. We added our own insurance to be safe, but the representative told us it was only for medical and not for the vehicle. They are also holding $2000 on the credit card until we bring the car back, which was never mentioned in advance. We were not prepared to spend $2500 for a basic Volkswagen SUV with floppy wipers. Hopefully we will have no issues returning the vehicle and receiving the $2000 deposit back. We will not be renting from Alamo ever again after this negative experience.Reviewed 18 Nov. 2020

Cons:First of all, the pick-up experience was horrible. Standing for 1 hour in the small room and just 2 staff working there with that many customers. When I got the reservation, it said $3 per day. But over there, they asked for a minimum $25 for insurance. I told them I have my own insurance with the credit card. They told me I cannot use them here in Mexico! I accepted to use their insurance. Then they bring me a form to sign and decline my insurance with my credit card and accept their insurance! I was confused. If my insurance does not work in Mexico, why you asked me to decile that insurance? Since I was too tired, I accepted. So per day $24 plus $2 for renting the car, total $26 without tax. But when I wanted to pay, I saw the bill of $176 for 4 days! I told them "how you calculated?". They said $104 plus taxes!!!! Just imagine almost 70% for tax. Seriously????? It was a horrible experience with them. Just imagine the $6 bill amount when I booked online turned out to $176. And this is how they are lying to the customer. I declined that bill and did not get the car since I found they are not honest with the customers.Reviewed 30 Jan. 2020

Cons:Was looking at car rentals in Cancun through carentals.com reserved a car for $6 for the week supposedly. I knew it was too go to be true, wasn’t sure if they were going to try and make it up with added insurance. When I get there they said the reservation wasn’t paid for and they only had 1 car left for $250 for the week. We said no thank you and went to the desk next door. They knew we didn’t have a car and tried the same gimmick. We passed again and went to Budget and they had plenty of cars, we got a Nissan Versa for $175 for the week.Reviewed 13 Nov. 2019

Not clear expectationsPros:Car didn't break down. Shuttle was convenient.Cons:Alamo and probably other rental companies in Cancun are not upfront about rental costs. The quoted costs don't include insurance which is REQUIRED. If it is required, then it should be in the quote. Moreover, it is more expensive than all other components of the rental. The car was not in great shape which I guess is fine as long as they don't try and charge you for those damages when you return (scratches, missing hubcaps, etc.). Kind of made you wonder if they would though. The remote clicker did not function great either. I had an instance where the horn wouldn't work until the car was parked and restarted. Any guess how I found out it didn't work -- when I almost got hit by a van cutting across a roundabout and needed to use it. Not fun. Also annoying is that the Alamo location in Cancun partners with a timeshare company so they have their representative in the office pushing you to go to a timeshare when you just want your car after a tiring day of travel to get there. At first, you think they are providing nice information and directions until they try to get you into a timeshare appointment. I don't think this is good practice for Alamo to put these people in their car rental offices.Reviewed 27 Feb. 2017

Rip off!!!Pros:Nothing.Cons:1. Small print is not sufficient to warn customers of the required 3rd party insurance requirement. YOU SHOULD MAKE IT MORE CLEAR THAT THE CUSTOMER WILL BE CHARGED AN EXTRA $200.00 or so for a weeks Rental. 2. Any moron can see through the “retun on empty” policy. 100% of the time you pay for unused gas. THis the THEFT! you should require companies you promote to be fair with their customers. There is nothing you can do about it as a customer, your trapped! It’s literally impossible to return a car on empty. TOTALLY UNETHICAL! shame.Reviewed 12 Jan. 2019

Pros:Pros: Easy to get to from airport, most people speak English and are helpful.Cons:Somehow I booked a rental for $120 online and it morphed into $322 at the office... they claim to require insurance and charge you an additional $37 PER DAY as an airport fee?? Ridiculous... whatever price you THINK you’re getting online won’t be the price in Mexico. These guys thrive on gouging tourists. The system is set up where you take a shuttle to their office, so I couldn’t even walk away and go get a rate from a competitor... they trap you into paying close to 3x what you booked. Honestly screw these guys. Turo might be more expensive but atleast you’ll pay the price you booked and not have mysterious fees that 3x the cost.Reviewed 27 Mar. 2021
