Should change their name to PAYmore Worst Scam Ever.Pros:The check in/out process was relatively fast. The employees were all niceCons:When I made this reservation for a min van I knew there were going to be extra fees for the insurance but it was not possible to see how high they would be. To make it short my $156 reservation turned out to be $540 after taking the package the person at the counter reccomended. The guy actually reduced the rate he originaly presented of $580 if I paid $520 in the credit card and $20 in cash for som e processing. I agreed to this price and noticed their exchange rate from USD to pesos to be $21.5. Having just arrived in Mexico I wasn't sure what the exchange rate was. I mentioned it seemed high but they assured me it was the average. This turned out to be a ridiculous lie as I found out throughout my stay the highest exchange rate I ever saw was $18. My credit card voucher was made for 11,1180 pesos. Once this transaction was made visible online I saw the bank had exchange this number to $615 USD using the exchange rate of 18.17. As soon as I noticed this I called the people at the office ion Cancun and after talking on the phone with several employees that were very nice but couldn't give me a straight answer I was able to talk to the manager. I expressed my disatisfaction with the unrealistic exchange rate they had posted of 21.50. I knew he didn't have any control over this but I told him I wanted him to cancel my credit card charge and I would pay $520 in cash (remember I had already given $20 in cash). I told him he could then take the $520 USD and try to find someone who would habe an exchange rate of 21.50 per USD. He told me they couldn't accept USD in cash and if I wanted to pay cash it would have to be in pesos, which would be taken at their ridiculous exchange rate of 21.50. If that was truly the case why had they accepted the $20 in cash I paid when I signed up? No matter how I would pay for this transaction it would never be the $540 deal I agreed when I signed up when I picked up the car. I asked him what were my options. He was veery polite but said that unfiortunately there wasn't anything he could do about that and the best I could do with be to complain durectly to Payless Corporate Offices. He went on to mention that a lot of people complain about them and get some money back. Bottom line is they know this is a scam and they continue ripping people off. Not sure if this has ever been reviewed by their corporate offices but I have a lot of clients traveling to this area of Mexico and I will go out of my way to make sure they stay clear of these thieves!!! If al this wasn't bad enough they said they didn't have a mini van I had requested so they would give me a Suburban. I understand this might be a desirable option for some people as it is a bigger car but I didn't want to pay the extra gas a Suburban uses. The Suburban we received had a foul smell, all the seats were stained, the door handle was broken, had a hard time turning on each time. Horrible conditions for a rental car.Reviewed 16 Jun. 2017

Inadequate Pre-rental disclosuresCons:Payless Car Review Mexico We were not happy customers! 1. The car had almost 150,000 miles on it and was falling apart. 2. When making a reservation, we should have been advised by Kayak that liability coverage is required by the government of Mexico. The cost of liability insurance was $45 per day while the car-rental itself was only $14 per day. That means the price was quadruple the amount we were expecting to pay. The customer should also know in advance that if you decline LDW and CDW, the car rental company will pre-auth your credit card for $30,000 US. 3. When completing the pre-rental condition report, the car rental company was not forthcoming with regard to the hidden and obvious (but later discovered) damage. 4. The area where the current condition was reviewed with the customer wasn't sufficiently lit to enable us to see all the defects at night. 5. The contract stated that the gas tank was one quarter full and we did not check this at the time of the rental. Within 10 minutes after leaving the car lot, we discovered that the tank was actually empty.Reviewed 28 Dec. 2016

Cons:Online rental price is good, everything else is tinged with dishonesty and fees. Extra days are 2-3 times the rental rate. Car condition and damage is dealt with in an off-hand manner when leaving, but with great care upon return.Reviewed 10 Jan. 2021

Rip off artists--don't use this companyPros:Staff was polite and professional despite our litany of complaints about their company's policies, airport pick up and drop off were smooth, car didn't break.Cons:We booked on Kayak at a very low rate ($7/day) for a 12 day rental, which I've found is not unusual for car companies with overstock. What was not usual was the in-house insurance rates--$52/day for 90% coverage, which was then discounted to $35/day after we complained. In many years of renting insured cars I've never been charged such a disproportionate rate. Then we were informed the office was closed during our scheduled drop off time (6am), and that we'd have to pay another $30 for the drop off. Then we realized that we were being charged in pesos, with an office exchange rate of 19.5:1, which meant the dollar amounts we discussed would actually be about 6% higher on our credit card statement. The Payless office is 2 km away from the airport, so we felt stuck and went with it, but company policies are clearly designed to draw in customers with low rental prices and then add as much as possible once you're in the office.Reviewed 6 Aug. 2016

Strongly recommend that you do not use Payless asPros:There was a person at the airport counterCons:So many problems. They are 3 miles from the airport which makes a difference when they overcharge by 4+ times the price i signed up for. When I told him my Amex platinum covers the extra cost for insurance he told me to find another company (3 miles back & hour wasted). I asked him to charge me in pesos he said no. Their exchange rate over 10% the going rate. Even then total was 28 pesos higher. When I told him he was going to give me a return credit I told him don't bother Key fob didn't work and when I brought it to a different payless he wanted me to pay for a new battery (when I got mad he relented). I had to fill gas tank higher than I got it. Was told I could return it anywhere in Cancun but when I did they charged me an extra 250 pesos. There's more but I just want ro say this was the worst rental I have EVER done. Totally unacceptable.Reviewed 19 Feb. 2017

No way to start a vacationCons:The experience started with over a half hour wait for the shuttle to the Payless offsite rental location. The next surprise was the required Mexican insurance: We had the option of base liability only insurance for about $38/day and a $4,000 US hold on my credit card, or about $45/day US with a $400 hold on my card. It provided 90% coverage for property damage. While the insurance was required, it should have been given more emphasis at time of reservation. The insurance cost more than the rental! Then came the car, a several year old Chrysler Town Car with over 115,000 km. Although the car ran OK it rattled and clunked and the transmission would occasionally shift harshly. The interior of the car was "tired" and one floor mat was missing. The entire rear panel of the middle bench seat was also missing. The gas tank was almost empty, so the agent said there was a gas station just down the road. Said to bring it back empty. The whole check-in process took over an hour. Finally, when we went to return the car, we discovered there were no instructions to get to the site. Fortunately, we remembered the route. Needless to say, I will never rent from Payless again.Reviewed 25 Feb. 2017

Oldest car I have ever rented.Pros:Car had over 120K, smelled like cigarettes and seats were badly worn out. I had a lot of tire issues along the way, possibly because they were very old. This is my last time renting from PaylessReviewed 16 Jan. 2017

Cons:They will charge $35/ day more for collision damage wavier and $32/ day for liability insurance. I was able to decline cdw as my credit card covers it but liability insurance was compulsory. Later I found out there are many rentals which give liability insurance for free. So check that out. Don't get Carried away by the low price. And ya they will charge 10% extra for airport rentals + 4% extra for using credit card :-\Reviewed 8 Jan. 2019

Pros:Good value for the money. Some extra insurance fees which I honestly expected to be hit with at pick up. Not too much or I would have had an issue with it.Cons:Car interior could have been cleaned better. Vehicle also showing a lot of wear and age. Slow check in process for the vehicle rental counter.Reviewed 5 Nov. 2016

Phantom DamagePros:The car was new and clean.Cons:The people at the rental place claimed I put a tiny scratch on the car. The car was new but the initial inspection was at night and not thorough so there was no proof that I was responsible for the "damage." The "damage" was a speck on the fender the size of a grain of sand. They attempted to point to another mark on the car that i rubbed off easily with my finger. It was bird feces. They charged me 40 dollars. I also spent much more on the rental than I was initially quoted.Reviewed 10 Jan. 2017

Mexico Payless RentalPros:Friendliness of staff, new and clean carCons:No one told me the car rental location was ten minutes away from airport. I had to call for someone for a shuttle to car rental place from airport. Had to wait about 20 minutes. Other than that everything was great.Reviewed 21 Mar. 2018
