FAQs - booking Ecuador flights

  • I want to visit the Galapagos Islands. Where should I fly into?

The Galapagos Islands are approximately 1000 km off the coast of South America, and flights to the islands are restricted due to their status as a protected National Park. There are no international flights to the islands, so your best option is to catch a connecting flight either from Mariscal Sucre Airport Quito or Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Airport Guayaquila. Two airports are located on the Galapagos Islands, Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra Island and San Cristobal Airport (SCY).

  • Do I need a visa to travel to Ecuador?

Canadian passport holders who are planning to visit Ecuador do not need a visa if their stay does not exceed 90 days. Upon arrival, you have to present a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your expected date of departure from Ecuador.

  • Are there direct flights to Ecuador?

There are no direct connections between Canada and Ecuador. However, U.S. and Latin American carriers often offer one-stop flights from major Canadian hubs such as Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Montreal-Pierre Trudeau International Airport (YUL) to the two international airports in Ecuador, Mariscal Sucre Airport Quito (UIO) and Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Airport (GYE) in Guayaquil. Flights from carriers such as Aeromexico, Avianca and CopaAirlines have a layover in their respective hubs, while United and American Airlines offer flights to Ecuador with a layover at a major American airport, such as Houston George Bush Airport (IAH).

  • I want to visit Cotopaxi volcano. Where should I fly into?

Cotopaxi is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world and is located in the Cotopaxi National Park, approximately 50 km from Quito. You can fly into Mariscal Sucre Airport Quito and either rent a car or use public transportation to get to the National Park. If you rent a car, you will start by driving South on the Pan-American Highway E35. Many busses depart from Quito's main bus terminal, Terminal Terrestre, towards Latacunga and the National Park's entrance.

  • What is the best way to travel to Ecuador from Vancouver?

Some of the most convenient travel choices for this trip are two-stop flights aboard either Avianca or United Airlines that travel from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO) with layovers at airports such as San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

  • If I plan on travelling to the northern part of Ecuador, are there any other airports that are convenient for this trip?

Delta is a cut above the others in customer service.

It was terrible, if they ran flights on time it would make a big difference.

Very dissatisfied with the fact that I had upgraded to first class for the second part of my trip only to find out that the lounge was still not available to me, as well as not having any food or drink service on the flight due to weather, so I lost out more than what I paid for.

We had a two hour delay in SL but to me the crew was so communicative and descriptive that it made it not a big deal. It was about safety first and I'd rather be way delayed than have a major issue during a flight. Also they automatically booked us on the next flight at our connection due to missing our connection flight. Everything went smoothly it was amazing. We are very pleased with our flights.

Delta cancelled my flight less than 24 hours before departure and provided no alternative options. Left me to fend for myself basically. Scrambled to book flight on another airline and paid a fortune to do so last minute.. Can’t wait to see how Delta deals with my refund.

Overall Delta was amazing from automatically booking us on the next flight once we missed our connection due to a delay to the constant communication throughout the entire process. We will continue to fly Delta going forward more and pay a little more if needed.

Great - This was the last flight before hurricane closures and did a quick turnaround to get the plane heading north. Much appreciated.

Coach seating is debilitating, neither my husband or I can walk the following day

Overall it was not that bad! The delay on the second leg to Indianapolis , was really unexpected!!

We splurged and decided to fly first class. Seats were roomy. But flight crew arrived late to the airport. That delayed our flight. Most of the passengers had to try to make connections flights. I felt bad for them. We checked 4 bags. We got three from the baggage claim carousel. 4th one was lost. Delta online help wasn’t good. Baggage claim staff were sympathetic and nice but we waited around for almost 2 hours and it had t been found. They did find it several hours later and we had to drive back to airport to retrieve it. I won’t be splurging on 1st. Lass again anytime soon. I think we got worse service. I am also not a huge fan of delta but we have family in ATL so we don’t have a ton of choice. What should have been an easy flight turned into a stressful event due to flight crew tardiness and baggage mishandling.

My flight delayed and i misss the connection they send me to orlando no to tampa i have to pay a uber to my house

It would have been better if they don't separate families in seating. We were seated in the aile row in the middle of a family of four. It would have been better if they they seat the family of four together than separated.

I upgraded myself to Business Class at the last minute so I had a DREAMS window seat. Seeing as I've never flown Business before everything was novel and fun for me and it made the 7 hour flight much more enjoyable for sure.

No headphones given for inflight entertainment. I missed my flight from the previous day and the customer service agent tried to extort an additional $100.00 US from me for missing my flight. Really?!

It was reasonably comfortable trip considering its duration (7 hours). Crew was very good and friendly, seats very more comfortable than other planes. Only negative comment would be that the bathroom light did not get its full brightness 🙃

The flight was delayed about 4 hours without any explanation. No wifi or entertainment at all on planes. Had to pay for checked bags I was allowed according to reservations.

It was good, plane is a bit older so seats are somewhat flat

Copa stranded us ans then tried to charge us thousands to leave Panama.

Well the airline was fine. The only thing is I was charged for a checked in luggage. But when I reserved the ticket it showed a check in bag allowed. Who can I get in contact with for reimbursement.? The airline said I had to speak to whoever I booked ticket with.

Friendly flight team and seamless travel from one stop to next.

Our flight was cancelled and it took them 5 hours to reschedule and the next morning they said we still didn’t have a new ticket.

We departed and landed on time, the aircraft was clean and comfortable, the crew were lovely. Online checkin worked well and the self service bag drop at the airport worked well. The a/c was an Airbus A330 and has been fitted with a good entertainment system with lots of choice in many languages. The price I paid for the flight was competitive with other airlines apart from the budget carriers, none of whom I was familiar with so I stuck to an airline I have used in previous visits to South America.

It was good, however the airplane was really cold. We received snacks and the crew was friendly.

Not sure why there are so many security checks at this airport. Consistently annoying showing passport over and over, checking carryons at gate all the while trying to make tight connection. Basically it was uncomfortable crowded cabin with meidiocre service

Change of gate in Santiago devolved into half plus hour delay and a really tight connection in Lima

Plane never left the ground. Mech issues - entire trip was rerouted through united.

They didi not provide wheelchair though we had requested. We had to run around for 40 minutes and arrange it from the airport!

I liked everything, this was classed as premium economy but it was much better than Lufthansas business class. Lovely staff, comfortable plane and an excellent seat arrangement. A very pleasant surprise.

Everything was good except the check in. Could not do it online neither on the machines in the airport. Needed special assistance from the airline desk clerk

No entertainment but not expected. Unless you are referring to monitor that you can use. Then Al, was fine on all flights.

Very nice and clean plane. Transit time between flights was tight though

Our flights got changed from United to Air Canada and our purchased seats did not get transferred so we had to pay for seats twice. I brought it up with Air Canada and they stated I had to go back and chase it with United. The united seats were $21 Canadian each and Air Canada were $56 each so we have paid $77 for each seat. Very unhappy

So far so good but food and entertainment are not available for this flight

Plane temperature was comfortable (not to hot) when boarding and waiting for takeoff.

Michael, our FA was very attentive, even finding me a chocolate brownie from economy class when the dessert selections were all dairy based. ( intolerant, not allergic so don’t usually need to order dairy free)

We tried to upgrade to economy premium but were told this was not possible as we had booked through United Airlines (and Air Canada was operating the flight). This seemed silly given there was ample space in economy premium. Additionally, we had to wait almost 1.5 hours upon arrival to taxi to the gate. Otherwise, the crew were very pleasant and passengers were friendly.

It was my first time with United Airlines and I would say it was very good experience and best of all the flights were on time. Will definitely fly with United Airlines next time.

headphone jack didnt work for the first flight and not much variety

Plane 3 hours late. Missed connection. No help from gate staff. App horrible. Lost connection repeatedly. No service desk. Finally got help from young girl driving cart.

Not as good as expected Air Can needs to improve totally rated on internet as worst

i think the flight was late because they were so strict about measuring everyone's personal items to try and charge them $119. It was really petty and made us late.

Terrible, We had to stay in Bogota for two days due to weather but the airline did not provide for the same day flight. Only two days later

Business class seats did not lie flat. There was only powdered milk for your coffee....in Business Class!! Food was good.

The seats were very uncomfortable. I would have upgrade or got different flight if I knew. I usually sleep in the plane but I couldn’t sleep at all. Very uncomfortable. Also no food or drink everything was to purchase, and that’s u usual for international flight.

There isn't much space in-between seats and even water needs to be paid for during the flight.

We did not know about the bag fees until check in. They are way too high. It’s insane. We also had a huge delay and everything costed extra which was very annoying.

Boarding was somewhat confusing in that the wrong messages were being displayed at the gate. It was somewhat annoying that I got off one flight and straight onto another (from the same gate), but in between they re-checked my hand luggage and made me get rid of my water (which they charge for on the plane). I was sitting in their 'Plus' seating, but the leg room was still too small to be able to sit square. The food options on the flights are pretty cheap quality (but not price). They got me from 'A' to 'B' on-time and for a relatively good price, but the experience itself was below average.

Flew with our two children. Paid $380 to check two bags (one was overweight). They then left the bags behind on Sunday, December 21st, with all our family’s clothes and family Christmas presents. When we arrived at our destination they told us the bags had not arrived, and they thought (but didn’t know) they were still in Boston, but that there’d be a flight the next day and the bags would arrive the next day. The next day we found out there was no flight, now we’re hoping we get our bags before we fly back out. Meanwhile, trying to get any engagement or accurate information is a waste of time. The folks at the call center are just gatekeepers, who can’t connect with any departments that actually do things to solve a problem. Getting information is made deliberately difficult. My biggest regret is that I’ve had a number of awful experiences with Avianca traveling between the US and Colombia, and still let myself get suckered into buying these tickets because the schedule was great. Never again.

We were not aware carry-on bags cost extra until we arrived at the airport so, we were charged $240.00 for two small carry- on bags! There was a substantial fee for drinks and snacks. No wifi, or other entertainment was available. Waiting areas were crowded and uncomfortable.

COP 7,000 for a cup of mediocre coffee. I thought I was on Spirit Airlines for a minute. Otherwise the flight was fine. Nothing exceptional to report.
