Fiji Airways is the national carrier of Fiji, operating international flights that connect North America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific destinations to the Pacific nation via Nadi International Airport on the main island, Viti Levu. Because Fiji is an archipelago, the airline also operates numerous domestic flights through Fiji Link that connect the islands.
When the crew welcomes you aboard with the greeting ‘bula,’ they’re saying more than hello, they’re wishing you a long life and good health, which perfectly embodies the welcoming nature of Fijians and their airline.
Loyalty programs
Fiji Airways has migrated its loyalty program to American Airlines’ AAdvantage program, a move that came when the airline became a full member of the oneworld alliance. I don’t fly to Fiji enough to benefit from frequent flyer membership, but this partnership caught my attention because it means anyone flying Fiji Airways can now earn status towards oneworld loyalty benefits if they’re a member of any of the 15 airline programs in the alliance.
What that means is that anyone who flies Fiji Airways and is a member of any of the loyalty programs of oneworld’s 15 airlines, like AAdvantage, can earn status towards oneworld loyalty benefits.
Those benefits include priority check-in and access to a network of nearly 700 business and first-class airport lounges around the world, including oneworld lounges at Schiphol in Amsterdam and Incheon in Seoul.
Tabua Club continues to exist as a separate membership product, and members get access to the Fiji Airways Premier Lounge in Nadi as well as selected affiliate lounges across the network, plus one additional piece of checked baggage (up to 30 kg for international flights and 15 kg for domestic flights).
However, under the current program rules, Tabua Club members no longer earn points or upgrade credits for travel. The Tabua Club is now a single-tier program, meaning all members receive the same level of benefits and privileges regardless of their level of spending or travel frequency.
Seats & legroom
International flights on Fiji Airways offer two cabin classes: business class and economy seating, with Bula Space offering extra-legroom seats within economy rather than a separate premium economy cabin. The Airbus A350-900 in their fleet features Collins Aerospace Super Diamond fully lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access in business class. If you’re like me and can never sleep in airplanes, consider splurging on these lie-flat seats because they’re a game changer.
Seat selection varies slightly depending on which Airbus or Boeing aircraft you fly. Seat pitch and width vary by aircraft type and cabin class, though in my experience there’s ample legroom throughout the Fiji Airways fleet.
There are some seats I like to avoid, like those near the toilets and the galley as the constant noise and stream of passengers walking back and forth is off-putting, especially on a long-haul flight where I’m trying to sleep.
Another thing to look out for are seats located in front of exit rows, bulkheads, or at the back of the plane. None of these seats recline so you’re really never going to be able to sleep.
In-flight entertainment
Fiji Airways offers an award-winning in-flight entertainment system. Most aircraft feature personal seat-back screens offering movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, and games, while B737-800 and ATR aircraft offer content streaming directly to personal devices. Most content is Hollywood and international fare, but because Fiji Airways operates many flights in the Asia-Pacific region, there’s a nice selection of international movies. I always enjoy these because I get to discover things I don’t normally see back home on my long flights from Vancouver to Nadi.
What’s available depends on aircraft type. On B737-800 aircraft, businessclass passengers get iPads for movies and TV shows, while economy class features overhead screens. Travelers with their own devices can connect to the AirFi inflight entertainment system on B737-800 and ATR aircraft to stream content.
In addition to video, PressReader provides a selection of publications to read, giving you unlimited and complimentary access to digital publications from over 120 countries. When you book your flight, Fiji Airways emails you a link to the PressReader app that lets you access more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines, download them for free, and read during your flight. This access extends up to 24 hours beyond your flight and you get to keep anything you download.
Wi-Fi
Fiji Airways only offers Wi-Fi on specific aircraft types—specifically the A350-900 XWB and B737 MAX-8. The price you pay for Internet access depends on the duration of your flight with prices being lower for those under eight hours.
All economy class passengers now receive complimentary full-flight messaging Wi-Fi, while business class passengers receive complimentary full-flight browsing Wi-Fi—which I like because I can stay in touch with someone on the ground throughout the flight if needed.
If you want to do general web surfing, there is a standard web package available. If you want to stream movies or music, there is a web plus option available.
Baggage allowance
Carry-on luggage allowances depend on your cabin class on Fiji Airways international flights, economy passengers receive one carry-on bag up to 7 kg, while business passengers receive two carry-on pieces up to 7 kg each.
Checked baggage allowances depend on your fare type. Economy Lite is the only fare where you have to pay to check luggage.
-
Economy Value includes one free 30 kg checked bag on international flights.
-
Economy Comfort and Economy Plus each include two 30 kg checked bags on international flights.
-
Biz Value passengers receive two free 30 kg checked bags on most international routes, which increases to three free 30 kg checked bags for flights to/from Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Dallas.
-
Biz Plus passengers also receive two free 30 kg checked bags on most international routes, increasing to three for flights to/from Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Dallas.
Check-in
Fiji Airways offers resort check-in at select properties, a feature I’ve never encountered with any other airline. When I was leaving from my resort stay, I checked in at a desk right there, they confirmed my seat, tagged my bag and transported it to the airport. All I had to do was turn up at the airport later in the day, go through security and immigration, and board my flight. My baggage was waiting for me at my home airport.
This service isn’t available at every resort. Participating properties include Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Radisson Blu Resort, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, and Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa. If you’re not staying at one of them, the airline opens its check-in counters in Nadi airport three hours before departure for international flights and close an hour before. For domestic flights, counters open 90 minutes prior and close 45 minutes before departure. For flights to Fiji from Los Angeles or Vancouver, counters open four hours before flight time.
If you don’t need the services of a Fiji Airways agent, you can also check in via the self-service kiosks at Nadi and select other airports, or check in online via the Fiji Airways website or app between 48 hours and 4 hours before your flight departure time. In either case, if you have checked luggage, you need to bring it to the bag drop counter so that it will be placed on your plane.
For check-in, you need your ticket, either printed or electronic, and a passport that is still valid for at least six months. Depending on where your travels take you beyond Fiji, you may need a visa or meet other passport requirements so check with the appropriate government agencies.
Change & cancellation policies
Fiji Airways’ refund and change policies depend on which fare type you purchased.
-
Economy Plus and Biz Plus tickets are fully refundable.
-
Economy Lite and Economy Value are not refundable.
-
Economy Comfort and Biz Value fares can be refunded, but you’ll pay an administrative fee.
Like any airline operating to or from the United States, you can cancel within 24 hours for a full refund with no penalty, as long as you made the reservation at least seven days before departure.
For changes, Economy Lite is the only fare you can’t modify. If you booked Economy Value, Economy Comfort or Biz Value, you can make changes but will pay a change fee plus any fare difference. Economy Plus or Biz Plus bookings waive change fees, though you’ll still pay any fare difference.
