The positives were: a decent car. A reasonable price (before insurance). A simple and fast returns process. Free airport transfers. The negatives were: a really long wait to collect the car due to a significant queue. Very high and unavoidable insurance rates ($45 per day).

The hidden fees are horrible. They charged extra for gas fillup when I already filled up the tank. They dont pick up the phone either.

We booked our rental car for Costa Rica through Kayak because it was so cheap. Like $6/day. We were renting for a month so a low daily fee was important. The most important advice we can give anyone is to make sure to read up on Costa Rica’s insurance requirements. Our six dollars a day, which came out close to $200 for the month turned into over $1000 once we got to the car rental place because of required insurance. You also need to have your own liability insurance when you rent a car. Luckily, our credit card company offered that. Routes car rental was there to pick us up at the airport, very kind, and our car was great. Do your research on car rentals before you show up!

I wasn’t able to rent the car because they don’t accept Apple Card for a deposit and don’t accept debit cards. They wont refund my money.

please make it more clear that there are extra charges if going out of province and that you absolutely require detailed insurance information. The amount of time you waste for people is astounding - so many people unaware of your stringent policies. I was super annoyed and will not be returning.

This was, without a doubt, the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. We arrived expecting to pick up our reserved vehicle, only to be told there were no cars available. We were put on a waiting list and ended up waiting from 1:30 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. at the rental office because there were simply no vehicles. We had no choice but to spend the entire night there. To make matters worse, there was only one employee trying to handle an endless line of frustrated customers. I was number 12 on the waiting list, and people just kept arriving while everyone waited for hours with little information. When we finally received a vehicle, we discovered it had cockroaches inside. After waiting all night, getting into an infested car was completely unacceptable. This company clearly overbooks reservations without having enough vehicles available, leaving customers stranded for hours. A reservation should actually mean a car will be available. The lack of planning, staffing, cleanliness, and customer service made this an incredibly stressful and disappointing experience. I would never rent from this company again and would strongly encourage others to look elsewhere.
