Nonstop movies were a great help on this second of two long legs, and it was really nice to have control over pausing, replaying portions, and jumping ahead past sex scenes. A 10-sec forward button like the back button would be very useful to skip nudity scenes, there were families around us! The trip was as comfortable as it could be, given close proximity of seats. Appreciated the pillows and blankets, and frequent water and drinks."

Cons: "Where to begin? During the booking process, there was no indication my travel partner and I would be flying Air Canada, and not Lufthansa. We were seated in the last row of the plane with painfully little legroom — even for two women of relatively small stature. The plane was not equipped with modern conveniences of operational wifi, music, or any other means of entertainment over the ten-hour flight. We were nearly an hour late to depart, but were unable to hear anything over the speakers regarding the cause for the delay, nor could we hear any of the flight attendants' safety instructions. What we could hear, however, was the surprisingly loud and nearly constant DINNNGGGG of the passengers' call buttons as they summoned the flight attendants. Because the flight was an overnighter, we attempted to sleep, but it was nearly impossible to do so due to the noise. I had earplugs in and could still hear the chimes, which were positioned right above our seats and made for an unpleasant experience and cranky travelers. The food was subpar as expected, but it would've been nice to be surprised with something resembling a fresh piece of fruit or vegetable. The flight crew was polite and one of the attendants took pity on us and offered a complimentary shot of whiskey, which partially alleviated the discomfort of the experience. That man is a saint and we surely hope he is better taken care of by this airline than we were. Overall a miserable experience. Will definitely rethink flying both Lufthansa and Air Canada in the future."

Put on same flight the follow day. Wait for it.... Delayed again (no weather). Would never have booked a flight with United in the first place due to similar issues in the past , but got duped when I booked this Luftansa flight and found out after the fact that it was operated by United. Pros: "The flight started with a visit in the recently renovated KLM crown lounge in Amsterdam airport. I liked the various seating options and of course the upstairs bar. The service on board was attentive and efficient, the food options I really liked (especially the Chinese dish) but also the little touches like the nuts & gouda cheese which were served in small porcelain bowls. The seat itself was very comfortable when sitting and the structure gives a lot of privacy. However for couples or friends travelling it's a bit cumbersome to have a conversation even when sitting in seats next to each other. Overall my expectations were fulfilled."

Beyond that, KLM must have one of the oldest fleets in the sky. Both ways LAX->AMS->LAX, I was on a 30-35 year old 747 with no wifi, no power and a ten-year-old entertainment system. Never again."

Once in customer service line, we looked and saw that many of the other passengers on our flight also never received their luggage. We estimated that 20-25% of the people on that flight did not receive their luggage as they were in line with us for the same problem. Hard to understand how so many pieces of luggage could have been overlooked and not loaded on our flight. Obviously there is a huge gap in their quality system to ensure mistakes like this are prevented."

Even though it was a day-time flight, we were asked to keep the window shades down, and the lights were very dim so it was impossible to read. 10.5 long long hours of sitting with no entertainment, no light and with smoke. The flight attendants also blocked off the back 6 rows of the plane, plus the regular flight attendant seats at one side so they could lay down, although most of the flight they were empty they did not let anyone move there. Lastly, no alcohol served on this airline to help numb the dreadfulness."

My original flight to Miami was non-stop, instead I had to take a flight that connected in Miami. That flight was two hours late! This was the worst experience I ever had!"

Then, when we finally got our Gate, there was another issue, now with the "finger". They weren't able to move it and connect it to the plane to get off of it. So we had to wait AGAIN. And finally as soon as we got off the plane, they were supposed to give us our carry ons on the aisle (Because it was a small plane CR700) , but again, we had to wait almost 10 minutes so that they could send the luggage... To make things worse, I had a first class ticket and I couldn't get the perks of it at the airport. Because they said I wasn't flying in an international flight. Come on?! Canada->USA->Mexico is not International??? You lost me AA."

But I wouldn't want to be seating in them for more than 2 to 3 hours top specially on the window or worse a middle seat. The crew was attentive up to a point (just saw them boarding and when given a cracker and some water during the flight). I think American can do a better job providing comfortable seats or even a nicer meal during flights."

When we started boarding, I noted someone else was sitting on my seat (1D) with his own boarding pass with 1D written. United crew politely asked if the gentlemen was willing to move to 6B, which his original seating in the system but he refused to do so. We' also personally explained to him that if he can yield the seat so that our family could sit together due to my wife's medical condition but he would not cooperate. I noted Those gentlemen on 1D and 1C are either buddies or coworkers. The crews were looking at each other without offering a solution. I ended up telling the crew that I could sit on 6B so that the plane can leave. The departure time was 20 min late u related my seating issue and de-icing took another 40 min. I am a Global Service member and I am very unhappy about the way the whole situation was created and handled by United."

But it is not; it is a large and important city, and it stinks that the demand is so low that airlines must use small aircraft on these routes. Is it because Canadian taxes are so high on airlines that fares in turn must be high and not stimulate demand? I can't think of any other reason connecting cities this size would be on crappy little aircraft rather than on at least an A320/737 family aircraft. The problem is that there is not enough room in the overhead bins to fit rollaboards, even small ones like mine. So they have to "gate check" the bag, which does not always reappear at the gate at the destination. Less bad than the choice of aircraft was the fact that after we pushed back, they couldn't get an engine started, so they cancelled the flight and reaccommodated us on a later flight."

Pros: "It is apparent that United is working to improve their customer service and efficiency - factors which have deterred me from using United in the past. FROM SFO TO CANCUN: First of all, the check-in procedure is very quick these days. At SFO, there is a curb-side check in, which also allows customers to pay the baggage fee and drop off the bag right there. I've used this in the past during busy airport hours. This time, I flew overnight, so I used the self-check kiosks in front of the check-in counters to check-in, pay the baggage fee, and print my ticket. I used the check-in line to check in my suitcase. The line was so minimal and moved so quickly, (as did security), I was at the gate in 30 min (from the SFO BART station). I rarely fly United because the check-in lines used to be very long and slow. In the past, I've missed more than one flight due to extraordinarily long check-in lines. I'm glad to see on the last 3 flights I've taken with United, this has changed for the better. FROM CANCUN TO SFO: I was happy to see that Cancún also has kiosks for self-check-in. It wouldn't allow me to check my bag, though, and I had to wait in a slow line to do so. Still, a much improved check-in compared to past experiences. *I should note: the slow line had 8 people in it and took 25 minutes. With many people, United Cancun lines have been known to take over 2 hrs. This was a Thursday afternoon on January 8. I'm not sure what the line would have looked like the Saturday before . . . BOTH FLIGHTS: The stewardesses did come by several times (as opposed to once on other airlines), offering water, which was appreciated. Finally, United tends to offer multiple flights at cheaper prices and more convenient times than other airlines. However, I still prefer flying other airlines - despite the increased cost - for the reasons below."

The video system on the back of the headrest in front of me did not work on either flight (there or back), and no snack of any kind was offered on the afternoon 4.5 hr flight back from Cancun to SFO. A mini bag of salted peanuts were offered on the overnight flight from SFO to Cancun. But these were the least of my concerns. Deplaning was slow and long when we arrived at Cancun. We waited with the plane door closed, and the air off, for about 10 minutes. It was a hot, humid, uncomfortable wait. Deplaning took a long time due to the small, cramped seats (see description below). On the return flight to SFO, we waited on the runway in line with other planes. While this is not the fault of United, it did make passengers more anxious to deplane. Opening the plane doors took a long time, and exiting the plane even longer because people were slow getting out of their seats and recovering their bags from the storage bins. I saw people struggling to crab-walk out to the isle on "dead legs" (the floor space between seats is so minimal, no one can stand up straight, and must grab the seat in front of him/her to shuffle out to the isle - a difficult task for the elderly, or when carrying purses as big as carry-ons, sleeping toddlers, or babies). The seats were extraordinarily hard and small on both flights. I fit in the seat just fine, but had no leg space, and could not recline. In effect, I was forced to fly the entire time in an upright position, sitting on a rock-hard seat that felt like thin plastic-leather stretched over metal bars. I'm a young 40yr old traveler of normal size (5'4") and health (135 lbs), yet it was extremely uncomfortable sitting on that seat with no way to redistribute weight. I had pain in my legs for over 24 hrs after flying United from Cancun to SFO. I flew 6 round trips to Miami and Mexico City last year from SFO and never had this happen. I've flown to Peru and Miami direct - and much more comfortably - on other airlines. I will not choose a direct flight over 2 hrs on United again, and will continue to choose other airlines whenever possible."
