FAQs - booking Canada flights

  • Do I need a visa to travel to Canada from the United States?

As long as you are staying less than 180 days, you do not need a visa to travel to Canada as a United States citizen. However, you do need a valid passport that has at least one blank page to receive a stamp from immigration.

  • How can I go from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to the city centre?

If you will be flying into Vancouver International Airport, you will likely need to travel to the city centre once you have landed. You can always drive, which will take you around 30 to 35 minutes unless there is extra traffic. Public transportation is available as well, like the Canada bus line, which will bring you downtown in around 30 minutes.

  • Which airlines have the best flight networks within Canada?

The largest domestic carriers with flights to over 40 destinations within Canada are Air Canada and WestJet, the latter being a low-cost carrier with hubs at Calgary International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Edmonton Airport and Vancouver Airport. Air Canada is the main national airline, with major hubs in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal Airport (YUL), providing travellers with a vast network of flight connections.

  • Do Canadian citizens need a passport to travel within Canada?

Canadians flying within Canada do not need a passport as long as they can provide other government-issued identification with a photograph, such as a citizenship card, driver's license or permanent-resident card. The identification must show your name, date of birth and gender, and the name on your identification must match the name on your airline reservation.

  • I want to visit Niagara Falls. Which airport should I fly to?

Toronto Pearson International Airport is the largest airport within the vicinity of Niagara Falls and probably the best option if you are looking for cheap flights. The airport is approximately 1h 30min from Niagara Falls by car, so you can either rent a car at the airport or opt for shared vehicles or public transportation. Remember that the area around Niagara Falls straddles the border between Canada and the US, so you might want to bring your passport in case you’d like to cross the border.

  • Are unaccompanied children allowed to travel within Canada?

Airlines such as WestJet and Air Canada offer Unaccompanied Minor services for young travellers on non-stop flights between two Canadian cities. This service is available and mandatory for unaccompanied minors between the ages of 8 and 12, and it is available but optional for unaccompanied minors between the ages of 13 and 18. You should request and purchase these services with the airline when you make your flight reservation.

  • How long is the flight to Canada?

An average direct flight from Canada to Canada takes 3h 46m, covering a distance of 3648 km. The most popular route is Toronto - Vancouver with an average flight time of 5h 00m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Canada?

The cheapest ticket to Canada from Canada found in the last 72 hours was C$ 34 one-way, and C$ 114 round-trip. The most popular route is Toronto Pearson Intl to Vancouver Intl and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was C$ 248.

  • Which airlines fly to Canada?

Air Canada, WestJet & Porter Airlines fly the most frequently from Canada to Canada. The most popular route is from Toronto to Vancouver, and Air Canada, WestJet and Porter Airlines fly this route the most.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Canada?

The next most popular destinations are Calgary (18%) and Abbotsford (8%). Searches for flights to Edmonton (7%), to Halifax (6%) and to Ottawa (3%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Canada

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Canada flight deals.
  • If you will be travelling to Toronto, keep in mind that this region has two major airports, which are Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). While YTZ is a smaller regional airport that is placed approximately 3.2 km from the city centre, YYZ is a larger choice that can be found around 22.5 km from downtown Toronto.
  • Those that will be flying into Calgary International Airport (YYC) will want to take note of the different amenities available for children. For example, there is a children's play area in each terminal that has a variety of play structures, as well as various activities and games.
  • There are quite a few nonstop flights that are offered between the United States and Canada. If you are flying from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), you can often find direct flights to airports such as Toronto Pearson International Airport and Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL). Those flying out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will frequently find nonstop flights to Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
  • If you're planning a trip to Banff National Park, consider flying to Calgary International Airport (YYC) located about 120 km from Banff. As one of Canada's major airports, many major airlines connect with Calgary International Airport.
  • If you are looking to spend some time at Long Beach in the Pacific Rim National Reserve, you can either fly into Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and rent a car, or catch a connecting flight to Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ).
  • If you travel frequently within Canada, consider purchasing a Flight Pass with Air Canada. Flight passes are prepaid one-way flight credits that you can use during a specified amount of time. You can manage your flights online and change or cancel bookings up to 1h before your departure.
  • To explore the Yukon territory in northwestern Canada, consider flying in to Erik Nielson Whitehorse International Airport (YXY). Yukon's airline Air North connects the airport with 10 domestic destinations including Vancouver, Edmonton (YEG) and Calgary.
  • The Northwest Territories offer travellers one of the best chances to observe the Northern Lights during the winter months. Consider flying into Yellowknife Airport (YZF) which is serviced by domestic airlines such as Air Canada and WestJet.

I like WJ but I don’t like traveling anymore

Good. Really crowded and busy. Going to Winnipeg plane was crowded and seats very narrow Now I remember why I dislike flying 😈

Having a lot of delayed flights on West Jet, however things always work out. So no complaints.

4 hour delay, lost our bags, staff was loud and it was an overnight flight

Check in was seamless , crew very polite , arrived on time!

Nothing special. Unacceptable wait for baggage on arriving in Calgary

Departure delay on a late night flight. Made us even later. Tired but got home.

Entertainment was the only issue. I did not have app & not equipped to watch movie on my phone. Used to other carriers with access to a screen for viewing. Other than that, everything was fine.

Westjet forced me to put my carry-on baggage in check-in probably because I was assigned seat 23A (the last row seat), which had no cabin space, which is unfair. I wanted to carry on my luggage so that I don't have to wait at the airport for my luggage. Also, because there was no cabin space, I was forced to keep my laptop bag under the seat, which I didn't want to as I was carrying 2 laptops and charger. The airline should basically tell people that if you are assigned a last row seat, then you are not allowed a cabin baggage or a personal item.

We were late boarding, but it all worked out. So, no problem.

Flight was smooth and comfortable. The crew were exceptional. Amanda, Nichole and Hershel were attentive to our every need. So friendly. My daughter and I were surprised at quality of service. Loved the double row seating. Snacks were delicious. We would definitely fly with Porter again. Flight PD 670 SFO to YYZ Thank you so much for the best flight experience we have had

The E195-E2 is a great aircraft! Leather seats, lots of legroom and SO quiet! The flight crew is terrific!

Check in was slow because of passenger ahead in Reserve line. Seats were somewhat uncomfortable.

Delayed by 2.5 hours. This happened previously on my flight from YOW to YVR on Dec. 26.2023. This is a terrible airline. The reason was there was lack of ground crew. This is a known event. AVOID PORTER AIRLINES IF YOU CAN. There is a reason half the plane was empty.

Flight delayed 6 hr. Looking for compensation and will claim for it.allow US people to fix to avoid huge delay having a canadian tech to fix it.

I didn’t make my flight due to poor weather and I had an accident driving there. I tried to get my money back or even credit and nothing. I have an entire flight both to Florida and back that I paid for and no one will give me any money back. I know this isn’t just Porter and it’s 3rd party- however airlines should allow these companies to take money for things they don’t get. I’m so upset. Who can afford a full flight they never take?

Flight Ottawa to Toronto canceled and no crew was available to direct me on what to do. I opened a file and I wait to be compensated.

New jet. Lots of leg room. On time departure. Early arrival. Reasonable airfare. Excellent online experience.

I had checked in online the day before but was instructed to collect our boarding passes when we arrived. I am not completely comfortable using the automated Kiosks and always enjoy the nostalgia of speaking with someone when checking in for a flight. Upon doing so however, we were immediately asked,"did you check in online already?" To which I replied, "yes, but we were asked to retrieve our boarding passes upon arrival." She then said, "that's what those machines over there are for. We really encourage people to use those." That unfortunately sparked a series of shortness and overall poor behavior in my opinion from the woman who checked us in. I understand it was early in the morning but I am always excited to experience flying and that interaction has unfortunately left a bitter taste in my mouth to the point I will forever now hesitate to book with Porter again. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Cheers, JD

Everything was fantastic, by far the best airline experience in Canada 🇨🇦!

Terrible experience. Air canada is the worst and Kayak website is also not transparent.

Cancel because of maintenance issues. rebooked next day and then the replacement plane 3 hours late.

My flight was great but my inbound flight from Toronto to Sault st Marir delayed more than 2 hours and we had to change the airoplan.

This was a fraudulent transaction. Kayak was at fault for accepting a stolen credit card. Kayak needs to change their verification process.

Free ear adapters for movie screen and a snack with a beverage.

Airport staff super friendly. Even put us on an earlier flight because we arrived early.

Treating guests with respect when they are having issues. Myself and another guest were expected to climb over someone who had a disability and was clearly not well. There was no assistance. Also when the lady beside me asked to see if there was a possibility to get off the plane as soon as they were able because her husband is having emergency surgery the flight attendant’s response was so rude and dismissive.

Flight delayed. Thus connection to Paris missed. About 50 people were left alone in YUL for 22 hours. Extra fees involved. No back up from Air Canada. Then the next day issues with luggage (fee paid to Air Canada but flight transfered/ slided onto Air France) .

5 delays to departure. Finally left 2 hours after scheduled time. Further issues with “paperwork” when we were ready to push away from the gate. Air Canada has a real problem with flights between Montreal and Toronto over the last 24 months. Of my 12 flights, 8 have been delayed or cancelled. With no compensation. I now drive between Toronto and Montreal whenever I can. At least I know I will get there when I planned to.

my flight from Toronto to Chicago was horrible. we tried to land 3 times, couldn't. they went to Milwaukee & sat on the plane/runway for another 1.5 hours. then they flew us back to Toronto. we had to stay overnight. the communication was bad. just told us to wait for an email update. no credit, no voucher for my additional night in a hotel. nothing. I will not fly air Canada again.

Food selection is very poor and sears are very uncomfortable.

Flight was 3 hrs late and another 2 hrs wait for baggage to arrive on carousel and a $7.00 food voucher that arrived as we were boarding our flight.

Seat rows so close together no one dares to put their seats back. Knees pressed against the seat in front, had to find a position putting my legs under the seat in front. But for 6 hours keeping that one position was ridiculous. All savings on the purchase price are taken back through charge backs for luggage $200 each way, Seat selection $44 per seat or you are seated by a computer randomly. Wife sat 5 rows away. Would avoid Flair in the future

The flight was safe (priority). Everything else is low-cost: too hard, delays, mediocre boarding, cost for carry-on and checked luggage.

Flair flight was 4 hours late due to not having a crew and the plane was filthy. Just water service Terrible experience flight 1513

Flair did not notify you when they changed gate number!

Can't be happy with a 5 hour delay. Only given $10 voucher for food and still EVERYTHING was an upcharge during the flight.

TThe first time I have ever flown with flare and both ways sucked

There was no entertainment There was no food or beverage service , not even a glass of water The plane door could not be opened upon arrival

I try to buy water the cabin crews told me I had to wait for them to come around with the trolley I waited over 2 hours !!!!! Literally 2 hours I was so thirsty .

The flight was canceled. We only found out at the airport. We had to book another flight which cost us more then the whole trip booked through Kayak. Lynx took our email and was supposed to write us with an alternate flight. We never received an email. They talked about reimbursement which was to be explained in the email (which we never received).

The online system for Lynx air to pay for additional baggage is not satisfactory. I was charged 100+$ for my suitcase when I tried to explain that the online payment was not functional using the app and showed screenshots of the same. In the end I gave up and paid and went ahead.

No snacks, just water.... could have been better. The actual flight was good.

Flight delayed by 4 hours but no communication. With passengers until after the posted departure time became apparent the flight was not going to board even close to on time.

Flight was sent canceled. The absolute most useless staff I have ever witnessed. Utterly careless - literally could not care less. 100% never using this airline again.

Poor communication at the check in counter and boarding gates.

Other then the screaming baby the flight was fine, nothing special

Check in experience was smooth, and the flight attendants were courteous and friendly. Very positive experience overall, thank you all!

Flight arrived late but other than that everything else okay

Great price for a new plane. Only offered water which we knew.
