Germany entry details and exceptions

Except German citizens and people who are resident in Germany with a current right to reside in the country.

Travelers on connecting flights, who do not leave the transit zone of an international airport.

Travelers from closed/banned areas entry is possible only in exceptional cases and is conditional on there being urgent need.

These include healthcare and social care personnel and health researchers, skilled workers whose economic activity is necessary and cannot be postponed or performed from abroad, freight and transport staff, seasonal workers, students who cannot continue their studies from abroad, travelers making visits for urgent family reasons, diplomats and staff at international organizations.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Visitors from Canada must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) or Antigen (quick-test) test taken 48 hours before departing to Germany.

Exceptions

Except travelers with valid proof of being fully vaccinated and who didn't previously stay in a virus variant area. Children under the age of 6 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.

Rapid antigen tests are recognized if they meet the minimum criteria recommended by the WHO.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors from Canada will need to quarantine for 10 days upon entering Germany.

The isolation period can be shortened

The quarantine can be terminated at the earliest on the 5th day upon proof of subsequent negative test result.

Details and exceptions

Exceptions apply to those who have spent less than 24 hours in a risk area as part of border traffic with neighboring countries are also not affected by the quarantine obligation. Other exceptions include commuters, doctors and nursing staff, and those visiting close relatives.

Travelers who do not present a valid negative test result, valid proof of vaccination, or valid proof of recovery within 48 hours after their arrival in Germany must quarantine at home for 10 days or until they submit their proof to the digital entry registration.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travelers returning from Germany must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to Canada.

Exceptions

Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test, other exemptions includes, a crew member or a person who seeks to enter Canada only to become such a crew member, emergency service providers, technical stops – flights refueling.

Travelers are required to take a COVID-19 test on arrival in Canada at their own expense. Travelers are also required to take another COVID-19 molecular test on day 8 of their 14-day quarantine. They will receive a COVID-19 test kit and instructions before leaving the airport/border. Those who refuse will receive a $750 fine.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Germany will need to quarantine for 14 days upon entering Canada.

Details and exceptions

Travelers are subject to a 14-day mandatory quarantine, this includes a mandatory 3 night pre-paid booking at a government-authorized hotel, at their own expense (approximately 2,000 CAD) and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost.

Towards the end the quarantine period, travelers will be required to take another COVID-19 test. they will be required to stay in their place of quarantine until they receive a negative test result.

Certain persons are exempt from the mandatory quarantine requirement when entering Canada for the purposes of performing an essential job or function as identified in the Order under the Quarantine Act. Exemption will be validated for each entry into Canada.
