Portugal entry details and exceptions

Travelers from closed areas may enter or transit through Portugal only if they have an "essential" reason such as professional, study, family reunification, health, or humanitarian reasons.

Business travelers should be prepared to describe the reason for business travel and may be asked for evidence. Students must have the appropriate visa and/or be prepared to present evidence of registration with a Portuguese educational institution.

Third-country national holders of residency permits or long-term resident visas issued by EU member states may transit Portugal to return to their country of residence.

Visitors from Canada are not required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test or antigen result upon entering Portugal.

Travelers must complete and submit it 12-48 hours before departure. This will generate a QR code which must be presented upon arrival.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travelers returning from Portugal must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to Canada.

Exceptions

Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test, other exemptions includes, a crew member or a person who seeks to enter Canada only to become such a crew member, emergency service providers, technical stops – flights refueling.

Travelers are required to take a COVID-19 test on arrival in Canada at their own expense. Travelers are also required to take another COVID-19 molecular test on day 8 of their 14-day quarantine. They will receive a COVID-19 test kit and instructions before leaving the airport/border. Those who refuse will receive a $750 fine.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Portugal will need to quarantine for 14 days upon entering Canada.

Details and exceptions

Travelers are subject to a 14-day mandatory quarantine, this includes a mandatory 3 night pre-paid booking at a government-authorized hotel, at their own expense (approximately 2,000 CAD) and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost.

Towards the end the quarantine period, travelers will be required to take another COVID-19 test. they will be required to stay in their place of quarantine until they receive a negative test result.

Certain persons are exempt from the mandatory quarantine requirement when entering Canada for the purposes of performing an essential job or function as identified in the Order under the Quarantine Act. Exemption will be validated for each entry into Canada.
